[August, 2017]  Auchroisk is another one of these little known workhorse distilleries that produce for Diageo's blends only.  Only a few independent releases find their way to the whisky connoisseurs and to be honest they are usually of average quality only.  A good reason to try another one if (maybe) this can break the rule...

No, this Auchroisk did not break the rule of average-only releases from that distillery which in this case is clearly due to an inappropriate cask.  If someone likes sugary whiskies this dram is for you, all others might find it not remarkable but it is easy drinkable... and the nose was really good!
    • Nose
      88 88
For a sherry cask maturation the colour is very light at pale gold and the texture shows early slow legs and later some fat, sticky tears. The nose is quite shy but on a nice grassy and spring floral profile that I like. Very subtle but with a lot of different aromas to discover. Give it some time to breathe and you will find fruits, heather honey and barley sugars. The only thing I do not find are sherry-induced aromas (so the cask was depleted, obviously).
    • Taste
      85 85
The taste is very sweet and spicy. With some goodwill I find hints of the sherry (dried fruits) but the barley sugars are overpowering almost all other flavours. That is too much of a sugary spike (for me) and the dram is unbalanced in that sense.
    • Finish
      84 84
The initial mouthfeel is warming and a little coating with some drying moments (cardboards), another sign of an exhausted cask (old wood). The finish is of medium length and drying out (cardboards again). Water turns it even more sugary both in the nose and on the palate, I like it better when neat.

  4. Ivynor scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Enthusiastic, well done, very fruity, even if it is not very complex.
    • Nose
Clear for a sherry. Crystalline nose, on fresh fruits, green apple, quite purified, does well speyside. Re-re-re-refill sherry? With aeration, more "Irish", exotic. pineapple, passion.
    • Taste
Fruity and pleasantly sweet, easy. Always fresh apple. Made a little Irish. Rather good but very little complex. Texture quite fluid, very slightly creamy. Some traces of almonds, notes a little tatin. End of mouth more vegetal.
    • Finish
      Pretty peppery, fresh apple, almonds.
