Let's forget the current price of this bottle and consider this Asama for what it is. A really nice and enjoyable whisky.
    • Nose
Dry sherry, spices, dried fruits, underwood.
    • Taste
      Round. Fudge and spices. Sweet.
    • Finish
Medium. Fudge and dried fruits again, some oranges too.

Not a whisky that you would like to have twice in a glass.

Nutty spicy dark fruits a bit of sulphur, not bad

Japan's iconic equivalent to the likes of Brora, Rosebank and Port Ellen is the 2001 closed Karuizawa distillery. Bottled in 2012, Asama is a vatting of the final vintages. Heavy sherry aroma, cedarwood and hints of curcuma inebriate the nose, enriched by complex notes of dried fruits, gunpowder and strawberries. At first sipping, spicy and tangy flavors overwhelm the palate before Mon Chéri, walnuts and fruity sourness start to emerge. The finish is lingering, peppery and semidry. A great young Single Malt that makes your fat wallet a lot thinner!

Very tasty (if you like it sulphurous), but not more. 86 points.
    • Nose
Sulfurous sweetness. Trendy cherry. Aloe vera. Dark chocolate. Something dirty hay.
    • Taste
Full, sparkling. Immediately the musty, leathery cherry is there. Full chocolate. Some oak.
    • Finish
      Long, fruity, sticky. Slightly sulphurous.

On the nose a mixture of fruits and especially of caramel quickly dominated by persistent notes of sulfur. In the mouth, very fluid but also very sulfurous. The finish is reminiscent of pepper and red fruits. Great drought. The addition of water makes the mouth softer and sweet. If I had known that my first Karuizawa would look like a sub-copy of Uberach ...! # Trolling1000%

At the release price of €60 I would have bought a couple and enjoyed them, but at €600 this has become another collector novelty.
    • Nose
First nosing right after pouring is sweet and heavy with sherry.

But it doesn't take long before it turns more deep and musky on dried dark fruits.

Quite some spice, light wood, and sticking the nose really into the glass there is definately burnt gunpowder smoke.
    • Taste
      Spice dominate on arrival.

Black cherries with a little bitterness.

Dark chocolate with some nuts and a twist of liqorice.
    • Finish
      Good medium lenght.

Feels like it is about to turn dry, but it never really does.

Quite bold finish, with the darkest flavours sticking the longest.

Aroma : malt, hot fruit jam, dried fruits, creamy fondant, milk chocolate, herbaceous notes with sourness, spices.   The taste is sweet: malt, pepper, chocolates, candies, dried fruits, wine sour cream and berry bitterness. Delicious. The aftertaste is long: dried fruits, tobacco, strong tea, astringent oak, bitterness. Conclusion . Very attractive whisky. Cheerful, bright, tasty, complex. Rating: 87 (n22t22f21b22).

The finish is the only thing that could not keep up due to the age, otherwise it was a brilliant first karu experience, the grading here I can not really understand (or some notes in itself)
    • Nose
Dates, pure great, deep Sherrynose without being antique (for sure too young), raisins everywhere, already slightly churned cherries, raspberry compote, musty oak despite the age, rubber tires, but positive, walnut
    • Taste
Bittereiche (but yummy), very own, raisin syrup, dark Plaumenmuß, dark Burgundy wine, apple peel, toffee, oregano and thyme, very full and sherrylastig
    • Finish
Unfortunately, not too long but delicious, oak, herbs such as thyme continue in the throat, cherry pits and red grapes

Nose heavy stewed fruit, light tannins, vanilla. Pleasant fruity mouth full and round. Final bitter. Way. Q / p totally delusional.

If one is honest in ignoring the name Karuizawa noted on the label, this whisky is a dry sherry, marked by wood, and with a lot of bitterness in the end. The price of 60 € was consistent, does not deserve to spend more. 80/100

    from purchased sample:

Nose: Fudge, and maybe a little chocolate
and toffee, and kirsch. A little wood and something like a damp green
forest. Vinuous, though somewhat earthy and savory - not the
sulphur/salted meats. Surprisingly dark and rich for a whisky this
    young. Rather malty.

Palate: Really nice texture and thickness.
Brown sugar stew and honey, which give way to more fudge with flecks of
chocolate. Wood, ginger, mellow orange zest are secondary. Bitter and
sour, turning into something very nice, topped off with some herbs and
    twigs.

Finish: This is really something. Fudgy, a little
extracted fruit. This is not a powerhouse Karuizawa, but it's really
just very well composed and very solid.

Good but nothing more. Very nice nose.
    • Nose
Caramel, lots of wood, dried fruits, and especially fresh nuts. A little honey, dates. A little sweet. Very nice nose.
    • Taste
The nose was more promising. It is a dry and simple sherry: sugar, wood, dried fruit (almond) a little bitterness. Virtually no creaminess, it is austere.
    • Finish
Medium, on wood, vanilla, dried fruits. always bitterness.

  22. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

N: floral, hay, marzipan, caramel, liquorice and orange
T: syrup, nuts, white pepper and honey
F: walnuts, drying, bitter and liquorice
HWF VBT-3 sample 6 tasted with Aby
    my guess a Highland Park I.B. 43%

This bottle, while not really bad, reaches an OK in my tasting set and will probably remain opened for a long time. It's an excellent whisky to pour for friends who come by and say: Ey, I heard you have some of that Jap whisky. Can I have some?

My tasting set hi to low:
Awesome (Need more of this, now!)
    Good (May buy again)
Nice (Would be nice to get as gift)
    OK (Would drink it)
Poor (Great with Coke or IRN-BRU)
Crap (A waste of good Cola)
    • Nose
Tar, oak, burnt rubber, typical sherry tones.
Kinda like the 12yo Akashi. Doesn't really deliver on the Smack in your face awesome Karuizawa's but better then their less then stellar 12 and 14 OB's.
    • Taste
Too much sherry, too much oak. Not that great, but not total crap either. An average typical sherry whisky. But one of those heavy sherry ones that in the end just tastes of sherry and tar.
    • Finish
Quite short and more sherry. Has this been married by someone from Yamazaki?

Finally a financial opening has a brand become the luxury of Japanese whisky. The youngest (11 years old) does not lack arrogance to tease the oldest A very good experience of Japanese whisky

The new "Asama" 11-year old Karuizawa expression has just been released

in Sweden and is available at Systembolaget. It is a vatting of casks

from the last two vintages (i.e. 1999 and 2000), but unlike the TIBS

bottlings - vattings of the same vintages - it`s bottled at 46% abv,

i.e. not at cask-strength. It`s priced at SEK649 (which is a little over

7,000 yen), extraordinarily and uncharacteristically reasonable. The

TIBS vattings were far from spectacular, and that`s putting it mildly.

It would be interesting to hear from whisky enthusiast in Sweden what

they think of the new "Asama". Number One Drinks got a large number of

casks from the last two vintages when they bought the entire remaining

inventory. Here`s hoping "Asama" is not just an attempt to get rid of

    some not-so-desirable casks, but that it`s actually a well-composed

    vatting. The jury is out...
