Sweet biscuits, vanilla and red berries
Sweet, some red berries, cream and pepper
Short and sweet
- light with a small tingle on the tongue.
Nothing special. Just ok

Writers’ Tears is, as it clearly says on the label, ‘distilled, matured and bottled in bond for Walsh Whisky Distillery Ltd’. That means this is sourced whisky (produced near Cork, that’s all I’m saying). Logical, as the Walsh Whisky Distillery was only founded in 2016 by Bernard and Rosemary Walsh. This did this with the fortune they made with their famous Irishman, a blend created especially to make Irish Coffee (and later followed by Hot Irishman Irish Coffee liqueur). It will be a while yet before than can release their own distilled whisky.
Lots of honey and oranges on the nose, followed by juicy pear and cranberries. Very light and approachable. Aperitif.
It is much more outspoken on the palate and quite spicy! Red berries, vanilla and oranges are wrapped in a spicy jacket of toated oak, black pepper and nutmeg. It even becomes a tad sharp. Orange zest takes the lead.
The finish is warm – actually spicy hot – but fairly short. At the death the spices fade away to be replaced by bittersweet oranges.
This was quite alright. Much more spicy than anticipated, but very nice. Currently there are three different expressions of Writers’ Tears: Copper Pot Still, Red Head and the Cask Strength. When you consider that this bottle is less than 40 EUR, it’s fair to call this this bang for your buck.

Rose-Wein, Obst(schnaps), parfümiert;
Weinig, Obstkorb, Erdbeeren, cremig und weich;
Fruchtig, leichte Weinnote, eher kurz;
- The hot spices dominate this one. Drinks like it's 50-52%, not the 46% it says on the label. Might say skip this one and try it on a whim.
The nose is young, loads of that pot still character. Oily and rich, lots of oak and some sharpness. Some sort of Berry, but it seems hot, like baked red berries...
Palate is sharp, lots of forward spice, some cream and bitter orange peel. Palate seems a little shallow, I'm not getting the Sherry notes that they claim. It's a little too young, or it didn't marry long enough with the cask.
Finish is is hot and short, lots of wood spice, some oily creaminess but fades quickly. There's a bit of some sort of Sherry in the finish, but it fades too quickly too.
- On the nose, orange and pear, spices quite pronounced!
On the palate, it is fine, greedy, fruity, spicy, the scents of sherry come second with those of dry wood, finally sensation of red berries a little maderized and fresh cereals.
In the final, the alcohol at this time and then sweet fruity scents dominate.
A dram of a single malt that is drunk like a blended, without thinking too much, but like a treat!
