This early batch of Barrell bourbon comes entirely from Tennessee. While they aren’t allowed to say the name, they have said who it isn’t. Not Pritchard’s and not Jack Daniel’s. So that means this, and all Barrell whiskies containing Tennessee whiskey are George Dickel / Cascade Hollow. George Dickel bourbon is a scary proposition for some, but not for me. I have said before that it is the Scotch of the bourbon world. Not because the notes bear any real similarity, but because it is the least forgiving bourbon I have had. It does not come at you with sweet caramel and vanilla, though there can be those notes. Most people got stuck on the vitamin notes, on the minerality. But I think it is incredibly rewarding, and even still can have some of the most dessert-y notes around.

This whiskey, as stated before, is bottled by Barrell at a cask strength of 61.45%. It is 8 years and 6 months old.

Overall - 8.5/10. The spice on this is amazing. It is a shame that Dickel doesn’t normally use the high rye mashbill that a lot of Barrell has used. This is an absolutely delicious whiskey. Spicy and fruity and peanut buttery and chock full of grains. Not a typical bourbon at all, but don’t go to Barrell or Dickel expecting that.
    • Nose
Lovely, beautiful, divisive Dickel. Peanut butter and fluff sandwiches made with whole wheat bread. Raspberries. Flintstones’ vitamins. Underripe lemon. Fresh shelled peanuts. I’ve missed this profile, I need to drink more Dickel / Barrell. Brie cheese with honey.
    • Taste
Thick spicy jam. That same sandwich. Tons of rye grain and corn. Almost sherried tasting with the fruits and berries and spice. Fresh raspberries and raspberry lemon preserves. Leather and wood polish. Very thick, great mouthfeel, and not overly hot.
    • Finish
Whoa. The most flavorful rye spice I think I’ve ever had. Fresh loaves of rye bread with fresh black pepper. A baker’s whiskey. Leather. Intense and beautiful. Raspberry jam on that rye bread. Long finish.
