  1. Gloin scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

I like the smell very well, very aromatic, the desire stimulating to try, but not very multi-faceted. What is offered is intense.
The taste fits in very well, but emphasizes the sweet notes, while in the nose was found a light acid (the cherries).
The finish fits into the overall picture.

A whisky that does not invite you to explore, but simply tastes good. I like it.
    • Nose
Raisins and cherries, rose water, kirsch, raw, dark cake dough, almond, a little vanilla
    • Taste
light body, gentle onset, sweet, lovely sherry, sweet cherries, milk chocolate, delicate oak note, in the background a light herbal note as from a herbal liqueur
    • Finish
soft oak, chocolate and sherry, medium long

nose: rich malt, soybean paste, prunes, nectarines, the indescribable fermented sourness of Ben Liac. Overall, I still define it as, good smell, good complexity, and refreshing.
plate: sour plum, sour jujube, dried meat, raisin, a little monotonous, no change, but the lines are still clear, the kind that is pleasing
body: thinner, the mouth is not so powerful
finish: medium length, not dry, ebony, oak, suddenly feels like a high-vintage sherry barrel, which is wonderful
    all: Good ration.

Beautiful, clean, intense and complex 17 years old whisky, where the PX left a clear mark with its fruitiness and sweetness. High quality of casks have obviously been used for the initial maturation and even so for the PX finishing. Very nice/thick texture. I am just afraid that we will not be seeing the same caliber of whiskies coming from Benriach anytime soon...

Aroma: sweet, rum, sugar cane, molasses, plum marmalade
Taste: sweet, unfortunately watered down, red fruit, spicy, slightly peaty and spicy
    Finish: slightly wooden, saccharin, cherries
    Rating: 3.5

  8. wncvirus scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Aroma: a bit of dark chocolate, a bit of wine, a bit of raisins and a hint of sherry
Taste: A flat, slightly spicy flavor with all the notes hidden in the background. With subsequent attempts, noticeable notes of sherry and light spices. Slightly watery taste
Rating: 86 | 100. This whisky has a medium long finish with a sherry flavor. Basically whisky without any frenzy. More like whisky to try and unchcked

A pleasant surprise and step up from the previous 15yo which imho was overshadowed by its 12yo fully sherry-matured cousin back then. Too bad the 17yo only said a quick hello before vanishing again to be never seen again. Missed the buying slot, unfortunately. At least good memories remain. Recommended for a reasonable price sub 90 EUR.

Benriach 17yo Pedro Ximenez Finish 46%. Dark orange - borderline brown. Aroma is coffee, sherry cask, chocolatey sherry notes. Raisins and chocolatey sherry. Nice aroma. Soft woodiness. Taste is rounded-spicy-oaky-sherried. Nice balance. Deep fruits and syrupy with some soft oakiness. Good overall balance to it. Some spiritous harsh notes. Lots of gloopy sherry. Decent spirit albeit coming across as younger than it is, clean unsulphured oak. Maybe slightly overdone on the sherry. A touch of peat wouldn't go amiss here to balance things out, and would probably improve things greatly. Some will love all that intense clean sherry but I prefer something to offset that in my dram. (3.5/84)

Smell: Intense scent of raisins, dates and churches with a fine sweetness. Somewhat damp oak.
Taste: Powerful start, very sweet and still a bit spicy. Dried plums and raisins will come through. A little milk chocolate can be heard.
Finish: Medium-long, slightly dry, spices and oak finish off.
Conclusion: An intense, sweet and yet spicy whisky, it is not really complex, but very easy to drink.

A classic desert malt. Such a sweetness in the nose and also in the mouth in the beginning! A very harmonious whisky. I like it! Not too complex, but what he has, he has with expression and quality. You can buy it easily if you get another bottle and like sweet, tasty malts.
    • Nose
      88 88
This malt has beautiful dark, reddish copper notes. Bright red fruits with a dominant sweetness. But also a little acid - fruit acid. Great fruit nose. But a sweetie! I've never had such a sweet nose. Chocolate, milk chocolate with red grapes. The well-known sherry aromas emerge slightly in the background, after some time in the glass. But everything is framed by this icing sugar. Awesome!
After the first sip I have the taste of the tobacco in my nose. Nice.
    • Taste
      87 87
Wow! What a sweetie! It immediately fills the entire mouth with a creamy finish. Madness! Sherry flavors at the beginning. After this sweet start, the malt changes to a beautiful spiciness, which also includes aromatic tobacco leaves.
    • Finish
      86 86
The tobacco association remains in the end. Towards the end, the oak comes with a delicate dark chocolate - like the wafer-thin Lindt chocolate leaves.

nice, strong sherry whisky, the age gives a good aroma, but does not wash it soft, at ~ 80 € I would be there
    • Nose
Floor wax, furniture polish, sugar beet syrup, sweet-resinous
    • Taste
strong, spicy, raisins, oak, cocoa, Storck giant, oak
    • Finish
      long, warm, hot, cocoa

  20. Pyromann scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

If the Fifteen was balanced, this one is quite distinctive in both smell and taste. It is dominated by itchy tones, both fresh (those bananas) and such heavy, overripe fruit. But the sweetness is within pleasant limits.
Overall distinctive and interesting whisky, excellent piece. I recommend buying a bottle.
    • Nose
Ripe sweetness, oranges, cinnamon. Strong delicate fruit - especially banana and slightly overripe fruit. The aroma is heavy, denser, expressive, yet delicate.
    • Taste
The taste is medium-heavy, fleshy, expressive. There is a distinctive sherry / or some such wine, again a delicious banana style fruit, a pleasant sweetness. And certainly there would be more :) overall distinctive and delicate.
    • Finish
Relatively long, more pronounced and juicy range.

Nose: medium-ripe plums, "Colafläschchen". Maybe something like strawberry jam. The alcohol does not sting at all. Very nice, but also a bit boring. Hardly oak.
Taste: Sweet, again cola bottle and some strawberry jam. Unfortunately, a slight false sound (core soap).
Finish: Here finally comes the oak, the notes in the taste are repeated. Medium to short.
Conclusion: Well ... Too good and a slight false mark.

A sweet Sherrymalt. Well balanced, round, tasty, dangerous. But then too sweet to drink more than 2 glasses, fortunately. ;-) Good PLV
    • Nose
intense sweet sherry. Raisins and brown sugar. Vanilla, cinnamon, nutty. Light oak spices
    • Taste
sweet onset, then comes the oak flavor with raisins, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, prunes. Cinnamon. Intense and delicious. round
    • Finish
Long. The oak remains, sweet with sour elements and sherry. In the aftertaste comes a nice sherry nut note. goes down like oil.

Beautiful ripe-dark-fruity smoky malt, not only for Benriach lovers.
    • Nose
A slightly smoky note is received by the nose. And sherry, dark fruits.
    • Taste
Sherry, plum compote, smoke, herbs and your own Benriach note are immediately announced.
    • Finish
There remain the fruits and the seasoning. The combination reminds me of some bunnahabhains.

It's OK, maybe scrapes a good. It is certainly not bad.
    • Nose
When it comes to peated and sherried I'm always hoping for another Bowmore 15 Laimrig, whisky is unfair and just setting yourself up for failure.

The was an off putting mouldy rubber note to the nose.
    • Taste
Fruity raspberry, just not what I was looking for.

I struggle with myself. He is certainly not bad, but the great enthusiasm will not come up with me ...
    • Nose
Very dark color. Thick streaks on the edge of the glass ... I give it some time, at least a few minutes. Fruity, sweet. Yes, that's another character. But interesting! Smell almost cherries, also again the vanilla, red Kinderlutscher ... hmmm, good.
    • Taste
In the taste but then tart, spicy. Almost like fruit in rum, indefinable spices.
    • Finish
      Medium.

    • Taste

    • Finish
spicy, dry meter-long finish, later a bit bitter aftertaste

  39. WhiskyLovingPianist scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

N: So, this is another peated [PX] sherry finish job, with that identifiable Benriach house style. Aside from the fruit smoke, there's also some mouldy, sweet goo too.
T: Sherry-malt-sherry-malt,... with sweet pepper spices.
F: Plenty of aged oak here - like a more vibrant Glenalba WB if you will.
C: I can't get too intellectual about this. it feels like painting with numbers somewhat but it does the job in hitting the 'tasty' mark. A great campfire whisky for it's all-round agreeableness will please many palates. The PX finish works far better than on the Heredotus WB.

    Scores a C+

  40. Whisky-Connaisseur did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

A nice and palatable single malt. Good balance of sweetness and
spiciness. However, compared to the 15yo PX finish less sherry influence
here. Not entirely complex but savoury neat as well as diluted. A
relaxing dram, no more no less.

    • Nose
On the nose we have sweet notes of sherry, raisins, and Demerara sugar.
Vanilla and icing sugar arrive with cinnamon and a subtle nuttiness.
      Somehow restrained but quite appealing.
    • Taste
Lovely but again restrained sweetness on the palate with sherry, brown
sugar, raisins, plums and dates. Notes of caramel emerge, followed by a
slightly warming spiciness of cinnamon, nutmeg, oak and a hint of
      pepper.
    • Finish
The finish is slightly warm showing medium length. Gentle spiciness, nicely mixed with hazelnut and dry oak on the tail.

WITH WATER: Water tames a bit of the sherry sweetness bringing more
dark fruits such as cherries and plums to the fore. Significantly spicy
on the palate with black pepper, ginger and oak, followed by sticky
plums and cherries. The finish is medium long with creamy plum jam,
followed by dry and spicy oak on the tail.
