Whisky Reviews for The Exceptional Malt - 2nd Edition

- Needs some time and air but turns out very pleasing.
- Same foundation as Monkey Shoulder (Glenfiddich, Balvenie & Kininvie), same tart, acidic, slightly sharp freshness at first. A certain heat cannot be denied; I imagine this is why they chose to bottle this at 43 rather than at 46 percent. Then the other (and older) components kick in, as does the sherry influence. I detect a generous portion of Ben Nevis, whiff of peat included, and some nice oak tannins towards the death, which manage to round things off somewhat. A slightly discombobulated, incongruous blend; however, I found myself gravitating towards it more often than expected, especially for an apéritif. Definitely more of a spring/summer whisky.
