Dark fruits, leather, toffee, orange, raisins, cinnamon, barley sugars, tobacco, quite a lot of sherry in there, very modern but not bad

Springbank 12yo Cask Strength Extravaganza: 2022.11.12.

Now that it’s been more than a year since the last release of the last CS12yo I saw it fit to go into my sample cabinet and dig up all the batches I could find. Here is what it resulted in: a gargantuan tasting of 13 different batches. I had to turn to decimal scores to do justice to this session (this is something I haven’t done before, mind you). In Order of my preference:

    Batch #21 (45% Sherry, 25% Bourbon, 25% Burgundy 5% Port) 56.1%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/168596
    87.2 / 86.4 / 85.6
This one is a bit of a confused batch for me, too much is going on at the same time. It has some nice pine resin notes and lots of wet wine cask character. The cask influence takes over distillery character too much for my taste.
    86.4

    Batch #12 (65% Sherry, 35% Bourbon) 54.1%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/77708
    87.4 / 87.2 / 87.3
This batch drinks quite a bit younger than its age. There is a sulphury quality on the nose and a particular earthy smokiness.
    87.3

    Batch #22 (50% Sherry, 50% Bourbon) 55.4%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/183244

Most definitely, a modern style of SB distillate, the funkiness is elevated, and I even find some of the HB bitterness on the finish, I like this style. The spicy, resinous European oak is rather present on the palate.

    Batch #16 (70% Sherry, 30% Bourbon) 56.3%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/105550
    87.8 / 88.2 / 87.4
This one has a good balance of sherry and bourbon, some roastiness, dried fruits, wood smoke, some nuttiness even. The malt comes through cleanly with lots of vanilla and floral notes, there is just a hint of menthol as well.

A more sherry forward batch with intense spiciness and complex boiled or candied fruit notes. Camphor, dirty distillate - farmyard, drying woodiness on the finish.
    87.9

    Batch #18 (50% Bourbon, 50% Sherry) 54.8%

This has some very nice honied sweetness as well as floral freshness accompanying the rich maltiness and spiciness of the spirit. Fresh and white-oak-forward.
    88.1

    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/116449
    88.4 / 88.6 / 87.6
Intense, rich maltiness, vibrant spices and honey. Minerally distillate, earthy smoke in beautiful balance with the fruity, syrupy cask influence.
    88.2

    Batch#23 (100% Bourbon) 55.9%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/192086
    88.6 / 89.0 / 88.2
Very modern green type of American oak influence. A bit sappy, almost too sweet… but the creamy texture and the floral barley character comes through from the spirit, making it a very clean, juicy expression from the distillery. Most definitely dominated by the first-fill white oak.
    88.6

    Batch #19 (65% Bourbon, 35% Sherry Casks) 57.1%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/138854
    88.6 / 89.4 / 88.4
Smoky, dirty, resinous. Roasted malt and a bit of waxiness from the distillate. Strong honey note, vanilla, ripe fruits, and a touch of sulphur alongside the SB funk.
    88.8

    Batch #20 (35% Sherry, 65% Bourbon) 55.3%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/148336
    89.6 / 89.4 / 88.4
Heavy body, creamy, malty, spirit driven. Nice depth and sweetness from the reserved sherry influence. The barley comes through clearly, heavy oily texture, farmy, funky aromas. Almost reminiscent of the recent local barleys.
    89.2

    Blues Edition (100% Bourbon) 57.3%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/21544
    88.6 / 90.2 / 89.4
A masterpiece in floral bourbon maturation. Leathery, waxy and dirty, exploding with floral complexity and mineral hay notes. Almost no smoke, but a tiny bit of farminess. Drinks considerably older than 12 years.
    89.4

    Batch #15 (70% Sherry, 30% Bourbon) 56.5%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/99298
    89.2 / 89.6 / 89.4
Strong, spicy sherry influence, concentrated smoky fruitiness. Earthy vanilla, oily barley and pronounced farmy funk. This is one of the most intense batches and one of the dirtiest. The style of ‘dirty’ sherry casks is reminiscent of the old-school SB-sherry-funk.
    89.4

    Batch #9 (100% Sherry) 54.3%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/57458
    90.2 / 90.2 / 89.4
Elegant and fruity style of sherry comint through. Classic oloroso aromas, in perfect harmony with the dry and farmyard-y spirit. Spices from the resinous European oak, white pepper nutmeg, vegetal freshness and honied floral notes. Dry maltiness, some plaster, earthy smoke; all enveloped in thick juicy sherry.
    89.9

Fresh woody and yeasty. Bitter funkiness not unlike HB, and some plaster. Fresh floral honey, some damp hay, dried apples and pears, waxy texture, barley-sweetness. Camphor and sharp spices give more depth.

Compare both batch 13 (WB Id: WB105550) and 16. All have the same 56.3%abv. Both were using 70% Sherry and 30% Bourbon Casks. The flavour profile is quite consistent between both. At first both of it are quite similar, after a couple more minutes; they started to show the differences. Batch 13 show higher intensity and more sherry influences. While batch 16 show a more lively character.
    • Nose
      92 92
Medium + intensity, complex, sweet marmalade, apricot, dry plum, ginger candy. Smoke bacon with black pepper, cloves and hint of star anise. Let it sit for another 15 mins, some brine, dusty, leather and oakiness note
    • Taste

Long finish, sandal wood, sweet marmalade, some tabaco and slightly bitterness.

Tasting notes a quarter into the bottle and leaving it for over a month to oxidate, as (partially) sherried Springbanks tend to improve a lot over time. Based on the neck pour I would have rated this a tight 87.

Edit Feb.2021: 4 months and 40% into the bottle it's still improving. The sulfur notes have subsided to a mere whiff now, also the pepperiness is more subtle. Currently I would rate this 90/100, so 89 for the bottle on average.
    • Nose
      89 89
Pretty dirty with farmy notes, spices, roasted nuts and a sulfury pinch (actually the sulfur notes have subsided quite a lot since I had my first dram out of this bottle). Fruity, sweet and sour, apricots, sweet citrus notes and sour cherrries. Nutty with pecan and salted cashews, quite some herbs and spices like coriander, ginger and curcumin and finally a meaty note with pepper and soy sauce.
    • Taste
      88 88
Much more spicy than the nose. Very peppery, the sulfur is still present here, also nutty with the eastern spices. Because of the spiciness the fruit notes are pushed back somewhat, but still several citrus fruits (oranges, lemon, some grapefruit) are present.
    • Finish
      89 89
Long - sweet oranges, grapefruit, spices (chili pepper, ginger nutmeg), mild salted liquorice and a clear charred wood bitterness.

Quite an insane flavour profile. It's like someone has poured some soy sauce along with the leftover chinese takeaway into my glass of sherried whisky. Then poured in some mushroom broth, some cigar smoke and some candied fruits. And I'm really happy about it.

    • Taste

Springbank peat, lemon, the perfect combo of coastal notes and roasted nuts.

Lovely, so silky and long, with almond, bitter oranges, and mouth-watering finish.

  19. Slàinte Mhath scored this whisky 91 points Super Administrator

We do not comment on the packaging, do we? Springbank has always done things a little differently, but their success has proved them right. On the nose, mineral freshness, peat smoke and rich sherry notes combine with nuts, concrete and odors of an old TV screen. The palate takes you on a journey through the flavor wheel: sweet, sour, bitter, salty and savory, it's all there. A real shapeshifter, both complex and well-balanced, culminating in a long, substantial and semidry finish. At only 12 years of age, this cask strength whisky could hardly be any better!

    • Taste
Sparkling oranges, strong onset, light smoke, very mineral, sparkling and slightly peppery, powerful but pleasant spice
    • Finish
Smoke and mineral oak, again a lot of orange peel, very sweet, lots of warmth, nice long finish

Not super complex but so nice. Leather, marshmallow, dunnage perfection, marine air, hemp rope, creme brulee. Nose and palate are equally delightful. No awful sulfur to contend with.

On the negative side, it takes water surprisingly badly for a Springbank 12 CS. More than a few drops of water really tends to ruin it. I will only drink it full strength. Usually, with Springbank cask strength releases of all kinds, I tend to apply some water, but not in this case.

As a TV repair man I can testify that this smells like opening the back of an old wooden TV cabinet that's just blown a fuse.

Prominent sherry, but it's kind of "dirty" and quite sour.

      Stale cigars, butterscotch.

Wafts of a lighter general fruity note and danish pastry with sugar icing.
    • Taste
Full power right off the grid.

Initially I get dried and hard salty beef jerky with lots of green pepper.

The meaty notes changes quickly to chocolate covered black sherries.

Bitter espresso and a couple of fatty walnuts.
    • Finish
In my book this qualifies as long.

      Hot, spicy, warming, leathery.

Having tried two of these 12yo CS releases, I feel they beg the question; why buy further aged contemporary SB for a hundred euros or more, when these things cost fifty a piece on release? Excellent price/performance ratio here.

    • Taste
Powerful. Sherry ( fino? ), forest fruits, caramel, grilled citruses. There is also oak and sulfur here.

Hammer Springer, really delicious and intense. For me, the P / G ratio is absolutely fine.
    • Nose
first impression, very sweet with marshmellow and gummy bears, the Alk is clearly present and tingles in the nose. The alcohol evaporates quite fast and leaves a little space for bright fruits, a kind of grape with mountain peaches before then the so typical gum minute of Springbank comes through. The% still remain as tingling freshness in the nose
    • Taste
soft and oily in the mouth with the gum and light smoke flavors that are getting stronger. The 54% bring a very pleasant Chili Catch with, after a while, even some very dark fruits like Brommbeere come along
    • Finish
The finish is only slightly smoky spicy but then again really cute. He is really nice long and intense. The barrel still resonates a bit and keeps the finish alive.

    Enthusiasm 4/5 Whisky n ° 1323
    • Nose
Very intense, woody, a bit sulfurous. Caramel, vanilla. The soot of Springbank makes its entrance with delicacy. Gluttony increases with crunchy almonds. The addition of water accentuates the presence of dried fruit, but also juicy fruits and malt.
    • Taste
Intense and deep, completely fitting with the nose. More spicy with a little water.
    • Finish
A little dry and austere. Long and malty with water.

long and attenuated with hints of leather and confectionary sugars. A bit of savory too. Steak broth, wasabi.

What a pipe. Very complex and just very cool!
    • Nose
Whenever I smell the colleague, I have the same idea. I'm on a stormy, cold, rainy day at the cliff and I hit the spray in the face. Powerful, voluminous, maritime with light campfire smoke over everything. When the first storm subsides, with some time in the glass, it opens. Wächsener body. Leather is coming. Salted sherry. Lime, marzipan, over-ripe already brown apple. Spicy, slightly sharper tobacco. Somehow smells dirty to earth. Mature tropical fruits come after. Toffee, subtle vanilla. Sweetie comes through. Reminds me somehow of cola lollipops. Above all lies the delicate camp fire smoke.
    • Taste
Strong, spicy start. Oak pushes. The alcohol is powerful, but super fit, noticeable. The colleague has power. After the first blow it gets fruity, creamier. Ripe apricot, brings ripe tropical fruits. Clearly nutty with toffee and chocolate. Menthol and moist tobacco. Ne track smoke is always present.
    • Finish
Long. First slightly dry, a bit bitter. Mild smoke. Then only creamy, fruity to the end.

Springbank, the most electrical whisky. How do you even distill something to make it smell like electric model trains after use or a freshly unplugged power cable from a warm computer? I don't know but someone in Campbeltown does. A completely anti-modern whisky.

Whiskyfun: Springbank 12 yo ‘Cask Strength’ (56.3%, OB, 2016) Warning, warning and alert, there’s 70% sherry casks in the mix. Let’s proceed with caution… By the way, this is still the older livery, I don’t quite know what was wrong with it. Colour: gold. Nose: that’s the problem with electric cars, you don’t get all these wonderful fumes anymore. Now indeed I do get whiffs of old power cables, 1995 Macintosh, and indeed ‘old’ exhaust. Plus fresh concrete, cigars, and new walnuts. And mushrooms after the rain, chalk, carbolinium, leatherette… In short, Springbank. Bwilliant. With water: mother earth. And an old cabinet of Partagas 8-9-8. As far as I can remember, haven’t touched a cigar since years. Yeah, varnished or not. Mouth (neat): smoked limoncello and tarry lemon curd. A little icing sugar, perhaps. If it’s sherry it’s fino, and if they say otherwise, they’re lying. There. With water: amazing lemon, salt, and earth. Smoky. Our lovely olives are back, please call the anti-maltoporn brigade, chop-chop! Finish: sadly. Comments: it’s not utterly complex whisky, and it hasn’t got the 10’s unquestionable immediacy. That’s why I’ll only give it… SGP:373 - 91 Points.

I like it a bit better than its predecessor. If you knew exactly how the barrel composition was ...
As always there is an awful lot to smell and to taste. Complex and balanced, but with the right dose of "dirtiness" on the way.

There it is again, the beautiful 12 CS - nose: sea salt, dried fruits like apricots, but also fresh mandarins and oranges. Everything wrapped by meadow herbs. A small smoky note is there at the beginning, but evaporates quickly again.
In the beginning he was rather fresh and maritime (sea salt), after a while earthy and heavy notes come to the fore. Leather and tobacco notes come, always accompanied by mild herbs and later black pepper.
The alcohol is very well integrated, nothing stings, and a whole range of flavors you get delivered.
    • Taste
      89 89
Powerful start with neat pepper over the fruit. Here again come the apricots and tangerines, but also tropical fruits such as mango and papaya are to be guessed. Some violets stroke the tongue. In addition to mild liquorice, there are still young, freshly oiled oak planks, notes of freshly tanned leather and milk coffee. Mouth filling and long spicy / peppery. After a while, red grapes are coming.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long and spicy, with residual sweetness of grapes. A hint of peat.

  46. KayMeertens scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Smoother and even more sherried than the previous batch. It scores lower than that one, but I don't agree. It is at least just as good, maybe better.
    • Nose
A big sherry impact. Papaya, caramel, peat, mango, vanilla candy, orange, chocolate, hazelnut and cranberry. A tiny whiff of cheese. Later a little crême brûlée.
    • Taste
A higher acidity than in the nose. Mango, blood orange, caramel, peat, pepper, cocoa and raspberry. With water also cherry.
    • Finish
Mango, chocolade, peat, cranberry, caramel and blood orange.

  47. Murxus scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

It needs more water than its predecessors, but then it´s a very fine 12 CS.
