Nose: Dirty peat, medicinal peat, earthy peat, hints of almond, dampened cardbox. Saw dust, iodine. Hints of leather, and some dark fruits. Lovely. Classic Lagavulin.Palate: Smoky, kind of nutty, lovely syrupy sweetness but not to sweet, liquorice. Pretty salty. Slight burnt and warming, which is a good thing. Pretty oily and fresh.Finish: Smoky. Leaves a very oily and lemony after taste. No bitterness, which is a good thing to me. A bit grassy.Balance: Elegantly smoky. Good things from the nose continues to the palate, and faded in the finish. All in a very harmonious way.Price: You can hardly find anything better than this, at this price, with this age.Verdict: A classic Islay whisky. If you are eager to know what Islay is all about, Lagavulin 16 is a great start for you!
Every malt head should have at least one bottle of this on the shelf.
