Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 1995 MBa

11 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.21 points

N: prickly, spicy, cinnamon, brown sugar, vanilla

P: nice oily mouthfeel, spicy, werther’s candies, peaches, slight waxiness with water if you look for it.

F: candied ginger, spicy, long, dry, caramel corn.

Notes: would guess the abv closer to 60 than 50. Very big and spicy Clynelish that to my preference is missing the wax and melon/exotic notes. Would not have pegged this clynelish blind. Better with water. Becomes more accessible, peach and caramel notes come out more.

Daaaaamn do I need a bottle of this ! (Who has one to sell ? :D)
I've still only had a taste of modern Clynelishes, "sadly" (none from the seventies or early eighties, that is to say), but so far, this one takes the crown. You've got to love the fact that this one turns the typical floral part of the Clynelish DNA to eleven, though. I do ! I had it at a strong 90 but I'm going for 91 just for that extra little something it has.
    • Nose
Indeed extremely floral at first, mostly Rose and Jacinthe, but in general a metric ton of dried flowers in various pots-pourris. With that comes the expected waxiness but here under the form of some scented paraffin, like in some Yankee Candles. A clean and dry minerality supports the whole, like a Chablis. Extremely good and refined. There are some more classic sides developing afterwards, with more "plain wax" as well as unripe banana, lemon juice, green apple, and wet newspapers. Still though, rosewater and lychee (I almost forgot it !) make some episodic flashes, superbly refined.
    • Taste
Flavour for aroma, always a joy. The alcohol is perfect here, with great stability of intensity from arrival to departure. Begins mostly on rosewater and lychees, very juicy and perfumed, then gets more classic on a waxy maltiness, apples and grass. Should I find a single thing to say, the texture could be a tiny bit fatter. But that's nitpicking, really.
    • Finish
Superb still, with an incredible flowery come-back, those pots-pourris again, various aromatic tree barks (the ones they sometimes put in Gin&Tonic nowadays), tinned lychees, citrus skins. Good length, great aromatic retention.

An elegant Clynelish, where the barrel leaves plenty of room for the mild, mature distillate. He needs time and very little water, then he delivers.
    • Nose
dry potting soil, very mineral, vegetable stall at the weekly market, after a while honey and cold wax, with a few drops of water then maple syrup, fresh green mango and light sweetness
    • Taste
quite typical Clynelian waxiness, gradually more spice, with an overall look harmonious texture
    • Finish
mild but very wide, pleasant and no explosion but rather downstream in its intensity

A classic Clyenlish. Wax, wax and wax again with many citrus notes. Unfortunately, he loses a bit of depth at the back, which promotes the whisky for me from the 90+ category.
    • Nose
The smell of red apples and red berry pours into my nose after opening the sample. Lime, lemon mousse and a hint of citrus washing-up liquid unfold in the glass. Above all lies the Clynelish wax and something mineral.
    • Taste
The herbaceous, waxy taste is slightly bitter and offers notes of ripe grapefruit. Unfortunately I do not have the complexity of the nose.
    • Finish
The finish is medium long and still growing. It is accompanied by calcareous notes and the bitter acidity of the grapefruit.
