    Notes by producer;

    Coming from a distillery nestled on the very last outpost on the East coast of Islay, Ma is the darker, smokier version of the heathery, briny, unpeated whisky from the distillery we know as Bn.

    Cask Details;
    Four first fill bourbon barrels distilled in 2004.

    Tasting Notes;

    Nose
    The nose is delicate with a gentle spicy and a sweet undertone. Lightly salted walnut bread, the peatiness is subtle and with time and water releases a lot more zestiness. Warm flavours of peppery flapjacks and sweet charcoal. On the back, a light dustiness, polished furniture and chalk.

    Palate
    Stronger spiciness, black pepper and cumin oat cakes. Creamy, nutty texture with lots of roasted walnuts, brown bread and macadamia sweetness. Wet, damp, drift wood on the beach, Moroccan sweets made with dates, nuts and spices and a hint of chalk.

    Finish
    Lingering dustiness with a hint of 85% dark chocolate on the finish. The dirty smoke evolves into match box and ash.

    Pretty
    much a typical young peated bunny from a bourbon cask. But this one has gotten the
    time to round of some rough edges and has integrated some nice cask flavours in
    the spirit.
    • Nose
      Very ashy
      nose. Briny as well. Combined with citrus fruits (lemons mostly). You can tell
      it’s pretty young, some young spirit notes still in there. But for a young
      peated Bunna, this is quite tasteful actually. The citrus notes contribute to a
      good balance.
    • Taste
      Quite
      hot. Ashy and peppery. Again a well balanced profile. This is not one of those
      young peat monsters we are used to know. This has a bit more depth.
    • Finish
      Again
      ashy. Pretty long. Some saltiness in there as well.

    • Nose
      fighting with the peat is a sharp tang like flyspray; fruity bourbon also lies underneath
    • Taste
      strong, peaty phenolic it makes your mouth come awash with saliva to dilute it as you try and hold it
    • Finish
      medium but as expected dominated by the alcohol and peat

    It started well though: a nice complexity on the nose, with sweet notes that dialogued well with other rather austere notes. We had an interesting nose. But, in the mouth, it's completely unbalanced, and in the end we end up with a whisky a little too monolithic. Pity. Available for 60 € 50 cl. The bottle is pretty.
    • Nose
      fresh, invigorating on notes of kipper, smoked salmon, seasoned with lemon, chives, salt, anise, thyme, eucalyptus. In the austere register, there are also chalk, charcoal, antiseptic and wet stone. There is a little sweetness in this Margadale MA1, with vanilla, egg cream, a little frangipane, hazelnut cream. And then, there is this little-I-do-not-know that annoys me a little, which makes me sick, maybe a note of yeast a little too present, but it remains all the same discreet.
    • Taste
      powerful, very powerful. The smoke blurs all the signals. There are still some surviving aromas in the background, including hazelnuts, charcoal, smoked salmon, but also a little anise, pepper, hay. The ashes really take up a lot of space and the mouth is completely unbalanced.
    • Finish
      I almost wrote "smoke" instead of "finale", that is to say ... It's long and persistent, on notes of chalks, charcoal, eucalyptus, thyme and especially smoke and of ashes.
