BenRiach 21 Tawny Port Cask Finish (46%). Consumed July 2019. Aroma has some grapey notes, raisins, cherry pit, notes of mixed berry jam, with some custard notes. Taste is vanilla and oak, breathy boozy linger, some jammy berry fruits, certainly very rich, trifle is prominent, oak rises up through everything. Pretty special stuff. Very enjoyable. (3.85/92)

    • Nose

Compact sweet, cherry syrup, orange candy, cocktail cherries, slightly sour notes, buttery, a little spice. Looks younger than he is to the nose.
    • Taste
      86 86
Different than expected, thin, sour, fruity, spicy, herbs, green tea, chocolate.
    • Finish
      84 84
Long and tangy with an oak spice that, together with the thin mouthfeel, creates an impression of alcoholic sharpness.

A decent whisky but not what I would deem a good price to age to quality ratio. Could have used a little more Port influence. Not overly integrated and harmonious. This was near the end of the bottle.
    • Nose
Buttery, soft sage, Lemond curd, oakwood, ripe red fruit, dates, a bit musty but not unpleasant, cherry syrup and butterscotch.
    • Taste
A little quiet, flinty, vanilla, oak, sweets, red fruit, herbaceous with very faint peat in the background, a touch perfumy, thin butterscotch, lemon curd, chocolate raspberries and ginger spice.
    • Finish
Finishes a bit flat footed and bitter.

A typical port (after) ripening in the nose. Great red fruit notes, raspberry, cherry, cranberry. The taste comes through the 21 years, full, spicy, chocolate, with 46% perfectly adjusted. In the finish balanced seasoning, fruits come through again later, here currant in the foreground.
    Not too challenging, delicious!

Quite a disappointment for a 21 year old. I would not try again.

In the nose somehow a lot younger than he is. A sour, fresh nose. In the mouth then not very voluminous. Again sour notes. In addition a sharpness, which acts alcoholic.
Nope. It's not for me and I do not need it again.

    Had higher expectations.
    • Nose
      Faint whispering sherry
    • Taste
      Orange marmalade ginger
    • Finish
      White pepper

waxy typical Benriach character, light bourbon sweetness, candlewax, salty wine. Ok to drink but I’ve always been disappointed in port cask finished whiskies because it never works, get Kavalan instead

  14. Achany scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Dark fruits, sultanas, some nuts, dried apricots, some herbs, fine oak, alcohol nicley integrated. Very well balanced dram.

I waited a little longer due to old age ..
    • Nose
Very fruity, in raspberries and cranberries, wonderful in aroma
    • Taste
A very strong beginning, a lot of stiffness, aromatic, yet 46% feel a lot .. To me too much, but still playing the first fruit taste, goes straight to the oak.
    • Finish
Long and not as warm as I expected, a lot of oak, the end is a lot of port and the bourbon is pretty good .. Very good for the end.

  17. Thermidor scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

An enjoyable one, but the price doesn't feel right to me.
    • Nose
The distillate seems to be on the retreat here. Caskwood and wine without any of the sweetness of sherry. Rosé pepper in a Fanta gone flat. Roast beef. The remains of yesterday's dinner on the table maybe?
    • Taste
Could be mistaken for an unusually dry oloroso but then again there are these bitter notes of peculiar quality that don't really sit with the profile of that sherry. The body is enjoyably smooth at bottling strength, but with its persistent wine and occasional bits of candied liquorice I wouldn't probably call it Benriach in a blind tasting. In fact I'm not sure what I would call it at all.
    • Finish
The finish is too quick. A single malt of this age should be able to do better, but perhaps there is a reason it is finished.

    Gorgeous malt.
    • Nose
What can I say, it starts wonderfully: soft, sweet sherry, nothing stands out, red fruits, great aroma.
    • Taste
Oh, what a start. Soft and deliciously fresh it starts, but unfolds very fast in the mouth, powerfully drives out the saliva ... Looks old, ripe, malty, woody, yet fresh and fruity.
    • Finish
Long and intense. Sherry and wood.

  20. Deloti scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Custard, raisins, berries, nuts, oak, pepper
    • Taste
Sherry, orange zest, wood (lots of tannins), bitter ale.
    • Finish
      Medium-short. oaky and drying.

  21. Kalle208 scored this whisky 83 points Member Senior

    • Nose
extremely acidic note, reminds me of vomited, subtle sweetness comes, possibly currant
    • Taste
Sweet and bitter notes, ginger, dryness and oak set in
    • Finish
      long and bitter-sweet finish
