  1. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Tasty, the smoke and the spice are great together.
    • Nose
Vanilla on the nose, sweet fruit notes, caramel, oak and a nice spicy note, some nutmeg.
    • Taste
Strong in the mouth, black pepper, sweet notes and tart oak. Tendency sweet with a harsh balance.
    • Finish
Spices. Black pepper, sweetish fruit notes, some smoke from the barrel.

Pleasantly grotesque mix from bourbon and Islay notes. 84/85.
    • Nose
      85 85
Vanilla, caramel, smoke, tobacco, spices and hazelnuts.
    • Taste
      85 85
Spices, smoke, bourbon, caramel and vanilla.
    • Finish
      84 84
      Medium length, oaky, spicy.

  4. Fudschafudscha scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

is pleasant to drink, super integrated alcohol, pleasant spiciness.
    • Nose
      86 86
with a lot of imagination you will find a very small amount of smoke, otherwise it is balanced and not as vanilla and caramel-like as a good average bourbon. The alcohol is very well integrated.
    • Taste
      85 85
Creamy, Bourbon-atypically oily, now a bit more smoke than the nose suggests. A pleasant spiciness, in conjunction with the mouthfeel, water would be out of place
    • Finish
      84 84
There is a bit of a refill keg left in the wood, the spice dries up.

Not what you would expect from a Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Different, but not better. Should have tasted, if you have a good portion of real Americans behind.

One of the best American Whiskeys that I tasted recently.I find it enjoyable and enlightening.
    • Nose
Sweet, powerful, spirituous and extremely nutty at first nosing - truckloads of fresh hazelnuts, pecans and roasted chestnuts. Notes of tobacco and shoe polish, roast lamb (slightly burnt), cranberries and Chateauneuf du Pape are coming up.
    • Taste
Powerful, acrid and spirituous at first mouthfeel. Spicy with smoke, ashes and lots of nutmeg, Burnt toffee and sour red wine.
    • Finish
Very long and spicy, dry, slightly harsh with  nutmegs in the aftertaste.

What reads on paper as an interesting experiment, can not be fully maintained in my opinion. The suggested smokiness is barely perceptible in my opinion and only appears in the mentioned weak earthy-ashen notes.
This objection, however, does not detract from the facts, as we are dealing with a really old, mature and solid bourbon (16 years are already almost a Methuselah age), from this side his strengths and zuzus show white.
The only real downer is here only the price of about 120 €.
    • Nose
Strong onset, spicy, sweet, strong caramelized sugar and a certain "mineral" dustiness (unfortunately it can not be said otherwise) ... Sometimes a touch of cocoa and a light fresh oak is noticeable Nevertheless, it makes a strong, voluminous impression in the nose.
    • Taste
A mature and solid bourbon. Sweetness and spiciness continue, accompanied by a slight dryness. Creamy mouthfeel with dark honey, the mentioned seasoning has a certain beeswax note, as found in rye whiskeys. My "mineral dustiness" - maybe an earthy, almost ashy note - comes along with a light weight. Is that maybe the Islay barrel ...?
    • Finish
Tingling spicy and dry, he pulls down. Here, too, the beeswax notes, the earthy ash increases slightly. After a medium time, it is the only remaining note, sometimes a bit stale wood is flashing up.

  8. ColdAesthetics scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

I have nothing against experiments, but nose and finish are just in grades just a 5 of the complexity or even length, the taste is still halfway interesting, but would never get here so if the grades would not know what because " tried "was. Would that just be an old dusty Japanese for 20 euros, the bottle from the 90s and so taste and smell, this would have 65 points. : ')
    • Nose
A very crazy mixture, as expected, on the one hand, the direct heat and heat of a typical high proof bourbon, but then directly this ragged Arsche and Heiderauch about it, as if you had thrown a glass of pickled apricot in a newly extinguished fireplace, the two opposites are superimposed but as massive as a grid, I have trouble picking out single notes other than those mentioned, sweet corn even later, but rather as a syrup, it still looks like it's just glowing and boiling under my nose
    • Taste
Ouh, very interesting, in the first half seconds he reminded me of the Campfire of High West, but then he turns from the light campfire and Heiderauch really only to Islay, clear coal ash, behind warm apricot, toffee, honey with charcoal in it , a little sour like pineapple juice almost, quite strange and then burned oak, the sweet corn flashes also on sometimes short
    • Finish
Dry, ashy, light acid, that's it honestly, short to medium, but only through the smoke

  9. The Macallan scored this whisky 70 points Connoisseur

N: clean with a nice touch of smoke and some ships tar

P: smoked fruit, spicy with some vanilla

    F: slightly smokey and drying

C: not really my cup of tea!

  10. Cubey666 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Tasted during a Malts of Scotland "Rollercoaster-tasting" October 2016

nose: initially some sour baby vomit... yuck! Luckily this goes away quite fast... after that clearly sweet corn, and a nice subtle peat smoke lingering about on a tradition bourbon nose

taste: the taste is more bourbonny than the nose. it has also lost a bit of its overwhelming sweetness.

finish: coastal, lingering, some vague hint of smoke, traditional Dutch caramel cookie waffles.

    interesting combination!
