Whisky Reviews for Springbank 21-year-old

The nose is gentile: papaya, bit yellow fruits and a bit less mineral then usual because of the Oloroso cask. After a longer time (+30min) sometimes a slight hint of ash comes an goes.

In the taste everything in the nose returns and it rolls fluently on the tong which adds some oranges and polished wood. The peat is less.

The finish is long peaty and a bit more 'heavy' than the taste.

Really love it! Goes a point up since this was the 4th time i tasted it!

I did not really find the sherry side. It's very good, although pretty classic. Pretty far from the 21 years old.
    • Nose
Peaty, lemony, austere and salty nose. No doubt we are on a Springbank.
The peat is light and well envelopes the other aromas. A pretty Riesling side, limestone and mineral. Candied lemon is added with white fruits (apple and pear)
A freshness with eucalyptus and a hint of pepper. A little tobacco and black tea leaf. I would not bet on a sherry on the nose.
    • Taste
Powerful and oily. Always austere and mineral present, with chalk and pebbles. Lemon is always there with some other fruits like cherry or currant. Notes of caramel and pepper.
    • Finish
Sweet and long, on pear and tea. A lot of wax.

  3. thijs100 scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

An example of a delicious older style of whisky.
    • Nose
The sherry influence is sophisticated. Plum juice, sweet oranges and peaches. Some overripe banana peel too. In the background there's some tobacco leaves, honey and an über-subtle hint of peat.
    • Taste
Nice and oily mouthfeel, always a plus. Sweet apricots and slightly bitter oranges, with some tobacco and furniture polish. Subtle, restrained peat. Also some cloves. Excellent balance.
    • Finish
Slightly peppery, peaty and waxy. Long and beautiful.

A really great Springbank, with some traditionnal musty funk wrapping a battle between chalky-waxy qualities and superb overripe fruits. Bottle aeration was needed, and even then it requires a lot of patience in the glass, but is well worth it in the end. Could go even higher on later occasions. 91+/92-

Yep, bottle aeration has done its job, it's much clearer than upon opening. Yet you still feel like it's gonna have to breathe in the glass as well. In the end what you get is a splendid composition between Springbank typical musty funk (mold, linoleum, fresh goat cheese), with both mineral (parget dust, chalk, wax) and fruity (Haribo peaches, almost rotten strawberries) aspects. Very aromatic eventually, the peach candy is massive, with floral elements as well. It might have something of a great aromatic white, maybe some Gewurztraminer, without being really sweet.

Perfect alcohol integration and medium texture, very nice. The aromatic profile is almost fully displayed here again, which is always a joy. So, rinse and repeat : wax, parget dust, chalky goat cheese, and a lot of peach and rotten strawberries. Super nice. It gets more and more melted upon later sips, and especially waxy in texture.
    • Finish
      90 90
The mustiness takes the high ground here, it's really massive. Parget dust again. There's a little white peach, and maybe one or two raisins (which might be the only time this dram really felt sherried whatsoever, mind you). Medium length. Not the best part, it could be more fruity and juicy, but still very ok.

You may wonder why the low rating, actually I wasn't sure if I should not even go lower. For me the nose was immature and the finish long over. Lots of Old Bottle Flavor, lots of acid from the casks, too much for my taste buds.

    Perfectly balanced nectar.

Good Springbank not much to add.. Is it worth 300€ .. Well it is 2018 and Springbank ...

Nevertheless there are some better 21y Single Cask Editions
    • Nose
soft buttertoast, toffee, decent mango and smoke. Lovely!
    • Taste
great balance of toffee, peaches,  decent lemon. Good!
    • Finish
super long almost never ending finish. Great! Nevertheless there is something in the finish that annoys me after 2-3 sips...
