  1. Falnor scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Tasted it at the first Whiskybase Gathering festival and during that time with lots of unique drams this one was clearly on it's one.
    • Nose

What a powerhouse. Intense nose and waves of notes to experience. A combination of salty peat with caramel, honey and brown sugar. Strips of bacon in a juicy jammy marinade.
    • Taste
      91 91
Smoked ham, chilli and seasalt. Grilled strawberries right of the BBQ. Brine, mineral and mossy stones. Again a layer of fruity jam.
    • Finish
      89 89
Very long and warming with a sweet smoky finish.

a Ledaig with the power, the grace, the effective minimalism and the brutality of an Octomore.. only the peat is a wee softer.. what a treat!

Awesome full and fat Ledaig. The farmy and bbq flavors are perfectly balanced by the oloroso barrel delivering a beautiful piece of whisky. Not much to say, I simply enjoyed this very mucho.

  10. Erik1908 scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Wow, by far the most powerful Ledaig I ever tasted. Maybe the most powerful ever. The first time I poured this in the glass, I was not that impressed. Maybe too much; too powerful, but time and air in the bottle did the trick for me.
    • Nose
      90 90
Everything I like about Ledaig comes together in this dram. Earthiness, sweet sherry-notes, dirtiness, burned rubber, burned meat on the BBQ.
    • Taste
      89 89
Needless to say that this is full body. Water is required, and a lot of it. Thick and oily. Salty, mixed bbq grill, pepper, tobacco, sweet peat-smoke. Everything well balanced.
    • Finish
      89 89
Very, very long. Very spicy in the finish. Already dry in the taste, and so it is in the finish. Peat-some till the very end.

Had this one in a blind tasting, very nice dram. Some clear farmy notes, peated, roasted meat. The fruity part didn't reach me actually, but still a very good whisky.
    • Nose
      89 89
A lot of peat, farmy, hay. Then some roasted meat, bacon, cow stable more and more.
    • Taste
      88 88
Strong, intense, high in alcohol. Hay, farmy, drying mouthfeel.
    • Finish
      89 89
Strong, still some peat, spicy, long finish, licorice.

  15. HammerHead scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

    Tasted blind:
Top notch, instantly recognizable as a Ledaig. Reminded me very much of the '98 Ledaig bottled by Douglas Laing, though this is clearly on all kinds of steroids; ridiculously powerful!
    • Nose
      91 91
Extremely farmy, burnt gras, vegetal peat, piccalilly, mustard, old cheese, salted black liquorice, thick sweet sherry notes (cherries and sour berries), nutty (macadamia), old toolsheds, some anise.
    • Taste
      92 92
A very thick and creamy mouthfeel, greasy, quite sweet on red fruits like cherries, red currants and raisins. Loads of black liquorice, grassy peat, charcoal, salty and quite peppery (chili's).
    • Finish
      92 92
Very long lasting: a bit of sour and sweet red fruitiness, loads of black liquorice and dark coffee, still the dirty farmy notes, chili peppers, scorched wood.

Part of the HWF second edition line up! This was the seventh, and last one, of the night. And what a finale to drink! This is certainly not an beginners dram. It’s offers a lot of in your fave flavors. Great stuff! Most of us were spot on from the start btw. The first and only whisky that was guessed right.
    • Nose
A typical ledaig profile! Farm-like, barn flavors and quite some rubber on the nose. A typical dirt-like peat that I often get in Ledaig. It offers a quite complete palate of freshness, sourness, sweetness and earthiness. Despite of it’s high ABV, this whisky is very well quaffable!
    • Taste
Sweet, fatty and oily. Again very robust and straight forward. It even reminds me of fertilizer. Never though I would associate that with something positive but here it is :) after a while great tobacco flavors start pushing through. This is a heavily matured and outspoken taste, not for the faint hearted. I could understand if this is not your cup of tea since is very outspoken in flavors, but that has nothing to do with the objective quality of this dram. It’s is just great!
    • Finish
This finish seems to be endless! Starting of with farmy flavors, sherried flavors right after that and it all ends in dark spiced, almost heavily spiced rum flavors. Lots of oak influence from a high quality cask. High quality tobacco remains for quite a while. I’m gonna enjoy every last drop of this inside the glass.

Apples and soapy smoke on the nose, a little grassy with some chalk and buttered white bread, and a hint of oily fish. Sweet fruit syrup and smoke on the palate which is dense and oily, building towards a big finish of lemon curd, black pepper, ash, caramel and smoked fish.

  29. Dirk scored this whisky 88 points Super Administrator

At some point the nose dominated in ash and smoke. It is nice if it is integrated but it was quite overpowered by this aspect. I expected more based on the nose.

I have to say it is a very interesting dram, very well integrated but kind of hoped a bit more of the fruity aspects to speak out. Not my favourite style but I can see why people would score this 90+
    • Nose
Cherries, smoke, blueberries, apples. Some olives and a very pleasant sweetness. The BBQ ash is getting quite dominant at some point loosing its fruity nose. Bouncing back to fruits again.
    • Taste
Sweet blueberries, cherries, faint bit of smoke, a bit rubbery. Salty and then back to strawberries and cherries. Thick mouthfeel
    • Finish
Quite a short finish, a bit of a letdown. Some smoke, salt and a faint bit of fruit. Kind of getting less and less from the nose to the finish.

Tasted it at the first Whiskybase Gathering in Rotterdam (26 November 2016).

Nose : Smoke and peat, but with a strong sweetness, what a power

Taste: grilled strawberries (from a charcoal BBQ), salty, coals, but with the sweetness of a sweet sherry, which is not overwhelmed by the peaty power and alcohol.

Finish: warm, intense and with clean peatpower

    • Taste
Smoke, ashes, smoked ham, pepper, salty and smoked bacon slices.

    Note by Wilson & Morgan;

A totally unrestrained Ledaig for the truly brave of heart, and one of the most peated whiskies from this distillery that we have ever had the pleasure to taste. As usual with Ledaig, the core distillate is farmy, very organic, with just the right amount of edginess to make it unusual and unique. There is peat smoke, but also lots of wet leather and damp turned earth: close your eyes, take a sniff and a sip, and imagine riding a horse while ploughing a field in the countryside. On top of this weird but not dissonant combination of smoke and farmy notes, the sherry adds its winey, dry and slightly astringent contribution. The finale is spicy, peppery, full of liquorice… with the magical interaction of sherry and peat.

Indeed a big, bold monster, but despite the high ABV this baby is very, very smooth. Very well balanced, typicla Ledaig peat/dirty style, smooth sherry cask influence. This is just spot-on, stunning Ledaig once again! W&M thank you for not diluting this superb Scotch!!

I'm noticing people scoring this dram way below 90 points; in my humble opinion that's only possible when you're not into the peated & sherried combo, or people are judging on a single sample. Or, of course, the people at Malt Maniacs had a complete off-day....
