Really weighty and substantial for an entry-level 12-year-old. An affordable, all-ex-bourbon-matured bottling that isn't boring, with a nose that beats many 15- or 16-year-olds.

Ripe, sweet fruits at first; I'm getting red apple and mango in particular. Then a darker side emerges, with roast aromas like barrel char and arabica coffee beans. The spirit has real weight and depth to it, and perhaps a hint of homegrown sulphur, reminding me of Glenfarclas, Cragganmore, and Mortlach (good company indeed). I keep wondering if there's just the tiniest bit of smoke in here, but it might just be the nutty, smoky notes of re-charred casks. Nice balance between sweet, sour, and savory aromas. Water brings out more dark-roast, coal-smoke aromas, then another wave of fresh fruit (this time, it's green banana) drenched in honey. Quite stunning, really, for the price point.

Without water: sour and zingy arrival, with prickly oak, followed by teeth-coating caramel sweetness. Big fat mouthfeel for 46 percent! Though it's bottled at drinking strength, it certainly appreciates water, which civilizes it and settles things down right in the borderlands between sweet and sour. Fruity acidity meets honey sweetness, with whiffs of espresso powder. Amazing texture.

Dessert-like and creamy, but with a hint of bitterness, much like a tiramisu with powdered coffee sprinkled on top. Not overly long, but nicely layered.
