Compass Box The Peat Monster.
July 2018 - Very very pale. Aroma is spiritous, plastic, medicinal, wax, perfumed vaseline and candlesticks, cheapest aftershave, building smoke. Taste is similar, some booze and smoke but a rounded background. Really rounded out palate-wise. Smells slightly cheap and dodgy but tastes really rounded. Pretty solid actually. Definitely has a nice flavour. I'm guessing the whiskies in the blend are pretty young but the flavour isn't harsh at all, and comes together very well. Grew on me it's just not a sniffing whisky up front. Though in saying that the simple smoke did come out on the nose over time. (3.3/79)
Sep 2018 - Aroma is a bit cheesy. Smoked cheese rind. Taste is very nice one-dimensional peat. Loads of peat - even more than Ardbeg possibly. (3.4/81)
Mar 2021 - Compass Box peat monster 46%. This sample is a couple of years old. Quite pale. Aroma has impressions of salt and lemon and seaside food and Scotland. Yep a little peat. Faintly rubbery. Some banana too but not too much thankfully. Impressions of Ardbeg mixed with a Speyside peated malt like Ardmore. Taste is lightweight up front moving to lemon and salt and smoke. The smoke sits there on your breath. Absolutely has to be Ardbeg in this it just shouts Ardbeg. The other parts don't necessarily improve on that vibe but don't dampen it much either. Does not taste young. Builds the peat over time. A good unwinding whisky but it really makes you want to drink an Ardbeg 10. (3.55/85)
