Distilled in 2000, bottled in 2016 and still 12 years old? But once asked for an explanation and this was the answer from Patrick Zuidam:

The age indication on the bottle (12 years) indicates the minimum age of the whisky that must be in the bottle.
In this case, I selected barrels from an older batch because they matched better with the taste profile that I have in mind for this whisky.

Part of a Millstone tasting set. Millstone seems to surprise me time after time lately. It’s very own and recognizable character is something I like a lot every time. For me it’s what I associate with ‘typical Dutch’ somehow. Obviously I’m very curious for this set!
    • Nose
This has a weird nose. For the first time in a while I don’t get the whole grain bread flavor. Instead I get Maggi, instantly! A big basket of raisins and dried plumbs. It has got a lot of flavor but I’m not sure if I like it.
    • Taste
On the palate dried red fruits from the start. Plumbs, berries and spices. Very full bodied. One can tell this is not just 12yo. Sugared water and a syrupy mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Medium length. Again an unusual combination of maggi and raisins. What draws my attention is that this whisky never gives a very clear wood influence. It remains in red fruits, grapes and spices.

      Not a whisky I’d buy.

Actually, I don't know what to think of this whisky. Zuidam never disappoints me, but here I expected something more.

Fruity, orange, raisins, coffee and chocolate and some maggi. All sounds nice, but unfortunately also sulfur.
    • Taste

Chocolate, Orange, Coffee, Oak, Dark Fruit. Rubber?
    • Finish
      82 82
Short finish, dark fruit, spicy, orange, rubber. Fades quickly!

This is the orange fruit whisky!
    • Nose
Plum, lime, dried fruit, chocolate, honey
    • Taste
Soft at first: Apricot, orange, caramel. Delicious. But he becomes peppery, sharp and bitter quite quickly. I feel that this masks other tastes. Unfortunately. It gets better if you let him sit in the glass and let him warm up a bit.
    • Finish
Fine. Dried apricot and bitter chocolate.

  5. Sandman scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Complex with an explosion of smell and taste. Super nice whisky from Zuidam.
    • Nose
Sulfur, rubber, maggi herbs, grapefruit, orange, cherries, raisins, black currants, apricot, raspberry, licorice, honey, chocolate and coffee beans
    • Taste
Chocolate, elastic, nutmeg, caster sugar, orange, grapefruit, coffee, liquorice, cinnamon, wood sawdust, forest fruits, toasted bread, apricot
    • Finish
Medium long, citrus zest, chocolate, forest fruits, oak, cinnamon, orange, toasted bread, maggi herbs, hint of leather and rubber.

  6. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

a Dutchman poaching with the Scots. In contrast to the 5y, he can keep up. A nice, spicy sherry dram that can not completely deny its non-Scottish origins. If it's so tasty, he does not have to. This is a harmonious whisky.
    • Nose
You can easily see the basic character of the 5, the caraway and also a touch of cardboard, but the whisky here smells worlds better. The 46% make it full and fresh and the sherry barrel shows its aromas: dried fruit, orange peel, chocolate, sweet but not sticky, with freshly baked white bread.
    • Taste
interesting, fruity, slightly acidic, very full-bodied, sherry aromas, oak, some leather, some rye bread is also included.
    • Finish
Very spicy, peppery, sherry aromas, oak bitterness, some caraway, orange peel and a slightly rumartige finish, in the end even a little cigar ashes.

Nose: sherrytones, orange, apricot, other orange fruit, apple, wax, caramel, hint of tobacco, a little floral, also a little bit cool.

    Taste: sweet, orange, other fruit.

Finish: not too long. Starts sweet and drying a bit further. HWF VBT 8 # 5

    Nose:
Oops! badger! Flower field (the hortensia nursery behind my grandfather's house to be exact). Some savory and a salty smell. Raw ripened red meat. If you squeeze the sherry grains from a barrel into your hands, you also get such a smell, a sherry barrel must have been involved. CHEESE SHOP !!!! That is this scent! (do I get a price now? This is even new to me)
This can still technically go to Mortlach and Ben Nevis.

    Taste:
Delicious! Soft sweet, air acid, cream butter babblers, red fruitella and some caramel with cream. But the sweet-sour fruity continues to hold the upper hand.

    Body:
    Silky soft

    Finish:
medium. Here some wood tones come forward, along with some vanilla. But the overtone continues to be fed by sweet-sour fruit.
