Whisky Reviews for Benromach 1974

  1. Dottore scored this whisky 95 points Expert Senior

To start with, I'm just a little bit in love with this whisky: so beautiful, so soft, so complex, so sweet, so subtly bitter, so spicy. Old sherry in the nose, a bit musty, some old balsamic. Beeswax, peppermint, green apple, orange, vanilla extract. If there were this nose as a perfume, my wife would have to wear it every day.
Banana vanilla shake in the mouth, some pear, minerality and freshness. Bitter chocolate. Velvety soft, oak (woohoooo!) Flows through the mouth and nose. The finish is slightly perfumed, slightly sweetish-bitter, long.
Fantastic whisky. For me, a Bääämämm! -Whisky, the one in memory and leaves in love leaves. 95 points

    Color: Gold shiny amber tone

Aroma: Opulent scent of sultanas in sherry, green apple and intense orange zest with a hint of beeswax and refreshing menthol.
If you add a few drops of water, you will notice intense notes of ripe pear, apricot, orange peel and sherry.

Taste: On the palate, ripe bananas, raspberries and cassis surprise you, which gradually change into notes of dark chocolate and an incredibly long and soft finish.
The enjoyment with a little water convinces with fruit flavors of banana, pear and red apple. Only now does toasted oak come to light and marries in a wonderful way with some licorice, dark chocolate and a subtle smoky finish. Pure elegance!

A privilege to have this taste
    • Nose
Nose: Soft, fruity in the direction of apple, pear and peach. There even seems to be a hint of honey melon. Also some dried fruit and especially raisins.
    • Taste
Taste: Again soft here. A full and creamy mouthfeel. The fruity character is again present here. However, something of a bitterness comes to the fore. It looks a bit like smokiness but this quickly draws in the direction of dark chocolate. Beautiful complex!
    • Finish
Finish: Delicious! A nice long aftertaste in which the chocolate bitter slowly makes way for the apple that I immediately encountered in the scent.

Note by Serge Valentin from whiskyfun.com:

Benromach 41 yo 1974/2016 (49.1%, OB, sherry butt, cask #1583, 452 bottles)  A brand new single cask bottling, following the similarly packaged 35 yo that I just adored in February this year (WF 91). Colour: deep gold. Nose: Mozart after Mariah Carey. Yeah I know I should leave her alone. What I find terrific is that there are two parts that mingled extremely well together. First, a very ‘beehive-y’ side that’s akin to what could be found in old Caperdonichs, for example, which I just cherish (beeswax, ripe peaches, honeys, pollen, old Sauternes, sultanas…) and second, a firmer, more coastal and mineral side, which involves flints, beach sand, a tiny tarry rope, and wee bits of camphor. Plus a little leather and cedar wood. The whole’s perfectly synchronised. Mouth: exceptionally good, with a tamed, slightly gingery oakiness that complements a wonderful citrusy profile, with tangerines, one slice of pink banana (oh forget), plenty of lime, and a growing saltiness. In fact, it gets extremely limy. Also a little curry and wasabi, ginger, slightly prickly pepper (all fine), and this feeling of chewing green tea leaves. That’s the oak, and that’s surprisingly pleasant in this context. Finish: medium, sharp and tense, almost angular, on lime, ginger, and green tea. Rather un-butt at this point, if I may. Very lemony aftertaste. Comments: I wasn’t expecting this much zestiness from an old sherry butt. That was impressive. Sure the oak feels on the palate, but it’s of the better kind. Or was it orangewood? SGP:562 - 92 points

Without a doubt a very good whisky, but I do feel it is past its prime. The wood has gotten a hold of the palate, and it doesn't let go. I liked the new 35 year old better.
    • Nose
We immediately dive well into old school territory with furniture polish, leather and an earthy/dunnage warehouse quality. Some fruity influences with fresh oranges and raisins, but also tobacco leaves, dark chocolate and some of that signature menthol.
    • Taste
Sweet cane sugar, raspberries and blackberries. If you swallow your sip it transforms into varnish, cigar tobacco and menthol. Lots of oak and tannins (and that's saying something coming from a guy who likes his whisky quite oak-y). Slighty drying.
    • Finish
Licorice with a hint of peat smoke and menthol. Ending on a subtle ash-y note.
