To be honest, I personally don't need an unpeated Caol Ila, the basic character just goes much better with a smoky malt for me
    • Nose
Relatively malty, the alcohol stings slightly, Ovaltine, slightly chocolaty, grassy, some lemon, unfortunately not really my thing, after the first sip it opens up clearly, more fruity, more citrus, now this dry chalky note on the nose too, more pleasant, Air is good for him
Water opens it wider, more gruesome and fresher
    • Taste
Lemon, malt, chalky, roasted aromas, here then very present typical Caol Ila notes, slightly sulphur, better than in the nose, wow really very citrusy and dry, Caol Ila in its purest form without smoke
Creamier, maltier with water, less citrus in the mouth, I like it better on its own
    • Finish
      Tart, dry, citrus, fruit zest

The degree is a little high, and even smelling the fragrance without adding water has become a challenge. Beautiful golden color, with the right amount of water, the aroma bursts out immediately, as the non-chill filtered wine becomes cloudy, unlike the inferior low-year bourbon barrels, this wine can smell rich fruit and light salt. , but the overall is relatively elegant, as if entering a fruit shop in winter, not as sweet and greasy as tropical fruits. It's a little worse to drink. It's too strong without water, and it's too bland with water. The smell is better than the taste. That’s why I admire winemakers. The art of spirits is the art of bartending. Single barrels depend on fate, and blending is the only skill. Although this is not a single barrel, it is difficult to judge the best drinking alcohol level due to the high alcohol content. However, it can still drink a clear salty taste with a hint of sweetness, and a hint of dried fruit.

Smell: Citrus vanilla with a little sea breeze, cliché. A little bit of sourness that I don't know where.

Taste: The thick fruit syrup smears the mouth, and gradually there is chocolate, and then there is mint and licorice, and then there are all kinds of spices. Basically, it's lackluster.

Finish: Mid-length, woody, spice, not too pleasant.

To be honest, it's a bit of a burner. This should not be the batch of wine on the tail of the 90s. I read some materials to write about this vintage2000, but I actually didn't find any relevant instructions on the bottle. I feel that in this batch of wine, as soon as the alcohol content is high, it actually becomes the dominant thing such as spice, which is not very good, really not good. At least I don't like it that much. I tried to add water, the sweetness was amplified, but the overall level was very inconsistent. A bit pulled.

Had this one in blind tasting, never would have thought of an unpeated Caol Ila here. Also very powerful, had this one after a Laddie with 68% Abv, but this CI felt heavier in alcohol.
    Suprising dram for sure.
    • Nose
      85 85
Powerful, strong in alcohol. Some slight red fruits, berries, later on much more sweetness, caramel and powder sugar.
    • Taste
      85 85
Strong, slightly red fruits, cherries, berries, and quite some alcohol punch, heavy one.
    • Finish
      84 84
Strong, red fruits, berries and cherries, middle long finish.

Room temperature when drinking: 18 ℃

    Viewing Eyes: light straw color

Smell Nose: 75% medical alcohol, mint, vanilla, lemon peel, grass after rain, green leaves, wax plum, apple cider vinegar, a little peach, yeast dough, weak fat, my most annoying air freshener Okay, would n’t it be refill bourbon cask (white-eyed)

Taste Palate: super sour, the middle part is a soft and soft lime oil sludge, and then quickly gasified, the milky smell of figs emerged, coconut milk, peach mousse, milk flakes, latte black rice milk, pepper, bitterness, a little salty . Suddenly warmed up at the end, the mouth was hot, and the tongue was numb.

Finishing Finish: Long, Fanta Apple Soda, Green Apple Peel, White Grapefruit Meat, Licorice Water, Bark, Dust.

Body: It has a bitter bottom and tannins. It is very rich in oil and fat, and it gets warmer and richer as it reaches the end.

    Nose: 84/100

    Palate: 87/100

    Finish: 86/100

    Body: 87/100

    Overall: 86/100

Overall: This smelling smell almost dissuaded me :( Fortunately, the back played well, and the unpleasant smell was left behind. Apart from the burning of the throat, there is no sign that makes me feel that this is more than 60 degrees of wine.

wow ... the ABV does its trick. some drops of water help to open it up a bit. Very "fresh", malty, sweet vanilla, some salty notes as well. it was quite complex, grassy, wet hay mingled with hints of sweet tropical fruits. finish is long and rather sweet. Fine dram but not for every day!

Great part. Otherwise, I hate Caol Ila. But that seems purely because of their smoke character. I can not stand water in my opinion.
    • Nose
Citrus-rich and mineral first nose, lots of vanilla, orange juice, chalk, a little tin bucket, somewhere between Arran and Springbank, with water it becomes dull after orange peel and coast
    • Taste
Vanilla with very compatible 60% alcohol, slowly it gets peppery, orange sweetness, again mineral
    • Finish
Beautiful heat with a lot of vanilla and only a subtle oak note, mineral mouthfeel, with water it becomes bitter

    Quite alcoholic without water.

An OK dram but not more than that.

    • Taste
      Oily, honey, hay again
    • Finish
Medium long, warm, still a bit honey

Since I can repeat the commentary to the last year's bottling 1: 1: "Good, crisp, reasonably interesting, but nothing more .. The earlier bottlings with 8 and 12 years I found very delicious and priced with around 50 € pleasantly The unpeated CI does not seem to get any better with age and is priced at ~ 100 € anyway off the window. " For a Hogshead single-cask of any third tier forest and meadowspecker for $ 50, that would be an acceptable story, but as a Diageo Special Release, I think that's pretty poor. No high art.
    • Nose
pure: dry - cereals, hay, biscuit and a certain freshness (could be over 60%, but also has something salty-minty), with water it's a bit greener, kräutriger, tomato herb, green apple, a hint of green gooseberry, fresh, cool, green pepper
    • Taste
pure: too spicy, a lot of white pepper and a deaf tongue; he needs water: a lot of sweetness, brown sugar, toffee, a little burned, still a lot of pepper; there is still more water and hopefully aroma: the sweetness wanders into the background, but the green stuff from the nose is back, herbs, hay, some lime and burnt cookies ... and then again something like Storck giants and baked sugar
    • Finish
long, strong, undiluted, very spicy and furry-dry, with water then dark chocolate, black pepper, some coffee bitter, maybe an idea lime

Whiskyfun: Caol Ila 15 yo 2000/2016 (61.5%, OB, Special Release)
As we’ve already noticed in recent years, those unpeated Caol Ilas (aka
Highland Caol Ila) are never totally unpeated. Just like Champagne
‘brut’ is never totally dry. Colour: straw. Nose: spirity and alcoholic.
Not saying it’s totally un-nose-able, but I’m not too fond of
methylated spirits. Some cider, perhaps? With water: gets a tad
vinegary. More cider. Nose: Mouth (neat): it’s good, but there are many
other ‘Highland’ whiskies that are just as good, if not better, within
Diageo’s very wide portfolio. You don’t need examples, do you? Oh and it
burns. With water: canned fruit juice. Finish: medium, with
grapefruits. Comments: totally not my business, obviously, but I do not
quite understand why they don’t issue a middle-aged regular Caol Ila CS
within the Special Releases, instead of those rather unnecessary
unpeated versions. Fairly good whisky, no question about that, but
what’s the idea? The message? The philosophy behind it? (given that we
    aren’t blenders). SGP:632 - 75 points.

    Diageo Tasting Notes

Color: Bright golden yellow with green reflections. Fine short puff.

Aroma: slow, fine and precise; There is little evidence on the strong palate. Fresh and sparkling clean; First, fresh green apples over a soft creamy layer of toffee and malt. Acidic grade, which gradually becomes maritime (salt, dried edible seaweed); pleasantly lively, with mint and hints of citrus (fresh lemon) and a dry gooseberry sharpness. Pure and generally carefully defined; Water produces a softer cooler note of freshly washed cotton, followed by a whole fruit stem of fresh fruit as well as nuances of strawberry, caramel and resin.

Taste: Light body. Sophisticated on the palate and perhaps too strong for the enjoyment of natural cask strength; yet essentially fresh, light and spirited; with sweet taste. Cooling menthol, spicy fruit, then a lot of malt and toffee. Much more accessible with water, with a soft, slightly sweet and juicy taste; the fruity sweetness is reduced by salt and light acid (as in Bitterlemon). In the end tough, with even more fruit, barley sugar and mint.

Finish: Tempting, yet powerful! Extremely warm, with a hint of menthol and eucalyptus. Soft and gentle with water; shorter, but still warming and greasy, with a bitter fennel-like character and an aftertaste reminiscent of pistachios.

Comments: This complex Caol Ila in the strong style of former untalented Malts carries the typical youthful and vivacious DNA of this brand. It combines wonderful fruit flavors, smoky and maritime notes with soft ripe tannins; juicy with water, soft and relaxed
