[May, 2017]  These D.O.B. (distillery only bottling) Talisker vary largely in their quality, some were pretty fine and others average only.  As a routine I buy a bottle of any new batch at every visit to Talisker distillery and so I did today.

The first negative impression is (beside it is still a NAS edition):  It is no longer at cask strength like all the earlier releases but reduced to 48% abv.  Keeping the price while reducing the content is nothing else than a hidden price increase, so I score two points lower on the price dimension for this greediness.

The colour of the dram is pale gold and the texture shows many late fat legs and tears.  The nose is not very impressive on a lightly peated vanilla driven profile.  Could be any malt among hundreds, hard to recognise the old (maritime) Talisker profile.  Not hard, impossible...  It arrives on the tongue very adstringent on heavy tannins.  As if they used a large proportion of virgin oak casks for that batch.  WHERE IS MY BELOVED TALISKER, Diageo? I do not like this at all!

The taste is all about heavy woods, one-dimensional sweetness and a drying mouthfeel (tannins as wells as cold ashes).  Again no maritime flavours, no spices.  In a blind tasting I would guess a peated Benriach or Tomintoul but never ever a Talisker.  The finish is of medium length and it is not good either.  Even somewhat below average...

This is by far the worst D.O.B. Talisker I had so far and even some drops of water do not help a lot.  As a drinker I would not pay more than 30 Euro for such a bottle.  Oh, oh Talisker, where are you heading too?  I took you off my list of favourite malts today...

Nose: typical Talisker nose, slightly smoky, salty vanilla, sea breeze, light fruits, especially grapefruit, interesting sweetness, wild honey and caramel, with forest soil and a few dry pine needles, altogether maybe a bit too young, slightly peppery

Taste: hardly oily, also here you notice the young age, once very little, then peat, fruit and vanilla comes out, almost no oak, furztrocken

Finish: medium length, some peat with salt, lots of caramel, very dry and behind the well-known Chilicatch, who does not catch you as usual

Water: it looks quite thin now, but we try a few drops, he gets a little softer, more wood and some resin

Conclusion: Somehow I had expected more, my last Destillery Only by Talsiker from approx. 2007 I remember as extremely yummy. The nose is delicious, slightly one-dimensional in the mouth and something is missing in the finish. Nevertheless, a delicious whisky, which makes fun just with two or three drops of water and also strikes away to the better days. Maybe a little too young, like so much from this distillery these days. Overall, there are good points, but he is just not outstanding - 87 points

OMG ... what was that? Definitely not a Talisker.

This malt is boring and one-dimensional on the nose and more than harsh on the palate. No Talisker signature style, just a quick overload with peat and some very immature malt profile.

I'm very disappointed, to say the least :(

I enjoyed it even if we are very far from the house style. I'm pretty sure I would not have recognized Talisker blind.

    Nose & Mouth 4/5 Final 3/5 Whisky n ° 1779
    • Nose
Shimmering, lemony, golden malt. He becomes powerful and elegant. Sweet aromatic herbs, it turns out to be very fruity. We even have a slight note of coffee. The smoke is minimal. It's very sexy ... but it's really Talisker?
    • Taste
Very sweet, with luckily sweet spices, pepper and a little smoke. Fresh fruit, fleshy texture.
    • Finish
Pretty sweet but with a reaffirmed austerity.

I bought this whisky on Skye directly for 70 pounds. Do not find him bad, but bought him more than souvenirs. No age or other information.
I do not find it bad to drink, but the 10 year old is almost as good but much cheaper.

    Tried during a tasting.
The label does not give much information about the type of maturation - why?
And in direct comparison with the DE I find this much more expensive Limited Edition much less complex and somewhat unbalanced. I'm not a big Talisker fan anyway and he would not be worth the price for me.
