An interesting whisky which shows a new side to Glenlivet while still holding true to the distillery character.
    • Nose
      86 86
Opens with oak notes both old and new. Sweet cotton candy backed up by big spicy notes of ginger and cinnamon tickling the nose. Freshly sliced red apple with the waxy skin still intact.
    • Taste
      86 86
Big bite of new oak, spicy on the arrival with peppery ginger. Sweet note appears with cotton candy and boiled sweets. A touch of tinned pears arrives.
    • Finish
      82 82
Short finish with sour apple peel and bitter oak.

  4. Calmar scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

A very pleasant mix of sweetness and caustic mineral derivatives flavored with oak spice, juicy, thick, not very complex and deep, but quite harmonious and whole.
    • Nose
Open, moist, dried fruits, furniture varnish, spiced wood, caramel, fallen leaves, herbarium, burnt jam, hookah tobacco, dried grapes, light mineral-industrial shades.
    • Taste
Soft, rich, creamy sweetness - boiled condensed milk, toffee, salted caramel; mineral-industrial tones - industrial textiles, welding aerosol, leather goods, confectionery notes.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, sweet creamy and wine-berry shades mixed with caustic mineral-industrial notes, red rowan, furniture varnish, spicy wood.

Quite a worthy representative of this line. Unlike others, he is stronger, although he is young. But the balance of these qualities allows me to vote for him.
    • Nose
      85 85
Dried fruits and red apples, muffins with powdered sugar, hence vanilla.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet, reminiscent of a cake with candied fruits and dried fruits, quite rich and bright.
    • Finish
      86 86
Sweet, bright, repeating taste, accompanying for quite a long time (though I added).

  9. Robinzon25 scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

A bright, impulsive malt, with a fruit bias. A decent example of no age whisky.
    • Nose
Light, fruity, with hints of pastry, caramel and apple baked with honey.
    • Taste
Fruits prevail, with malt and oak notes in the background.
    • Finish
Medium duration, soft, malty, moderately hardened, sweet-fruity, slightly peppery at the end.

  10. EvilAFI scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Sweet sherry influence, spice balanced, malt, a bit bitter, oak driven. Not bad, but not great.

Mouth: sweet with sweet fruits, red apples, spices and vanilla notes.

The Glenlivet Cipher is a well balanced, smooth, tasty and easy drinkable whisky. I gave 85 points.

Not bad, but personal I've  got other favorites for this price.
    • Nose
I notice a very good and fine malty vanilla in here. For the fruits I go for soft pears and some apple freshness. A deep honey sweetness with some oak makes it compete.
    • Taste
Good medium body, light creamy with more than enough pepper, ginger and cinnamon. The fresh apples are oozing through and leave some citrus notes behind. The honey and oak are more present now and makes it all together a good harmony of flavours.
    • Finish
      Medium length, sweet and fruity.

  19. markjedi1 scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

A touch atypical for Glenlivet with the emphasis on herbs instead of fruit. Nice release, but a little to expensive for what you get.
    • Nose
You may call this nose fruity without a doubt. Yellow fruit in a stew, with mango and passion fruit in the lead, as well as some dried variety like apricot and pineapple. Some citrus and a hint of banana. Some nuts and dried flowers. After a few moments, that is upholstered with some sniffing tobacco, ginger and soft caramel.
    • Taste
It is mouth coating, almost creamy. Very fruity again, with banana and oranges – no, strike that, it’s nectarine! – followed by pepper and nutmeg. This is quite pleasant. Mildly drying on ginger, pepper, cinnamon with some honey and herbal tea. Midpalate a bitter edge rears its head and the oak becomes quite loud.
    • Finish
The finish is medium long, drying and somewhat bitter on nuts and tannins.

Glenlivet Cipher, 48% ABV, NAS https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/83312/glenlivet-cipher #WagnerAlexTastingNotes First impression / color / viscosity: 2cl liquid, saffron-colored mystery (at least the distillery wants to believe me) is in my glass. Neither fast nor slow does the malt run down the glass wall with relatively large windows. So far so good, but what I am to keep from this marketing "gag" I do not know so right. I admit that I am a bit biased. Wait... Aroma / Nose feeling: Speyside is in the air. Lovely tones flatter the nose. The light alcohol is felt, but does not affect negatively at all. Malted barley mixed with honey, sour drops (orange peel) mix as well as very minimal wood and the ex-bourbon barrels are not really covered or betrayed by the impression of creamy caramel. The impression of berries is getting stronger and makes me think of hot love in the summer. The ice, mind you !! I do not dare to say which barrels were in play but if I had to bet, would type in several ways. Below vlt. a white wine from France? No idea... Taste / mouthfeel: Gently, the single malt is in the mouth dar. First, I immediately noticed the wood, which spreads prominently on the palate. Slightly tickling in the mouth at the second sip and I enjoy nuts, vanilla, caramel and through the retronasal exhalation, I am suddenly in the midst of a bulging cookie jar. The wood remains present in further sips. Lovely I like it! Most likely (!) I would spontaneously use a Knockando 18 (?) For comparison. Finish / aftertaste / Length: The finish is medium in length and shows lovely, harmonious, although here, too, the wood is a bit bitter companion. The sweet Speyside impressions, however, outweigh. In addition, there are also fruity, fresh notes. I think about citrus fruits. No acidic. More the sweet variants. Comment: All in all a pleasing, if also calm Scotch. The marketing gag was pretty funny, but does not have to be again. The PLV is not justified in my opinion. Tasty comparable malts you get a few euros cheaper. Would I buy it at this price? No. Points: 85/100

I am not a fan of Glenlivet but I actually quite liked this one, shame about the finish.
    • Nose
There is some stewed fruit and some dried fruit. Some sort of flower but I can't quite put my finger on it, new wood, sherbet dip and a hint of passion fruit.
    • Taste
Quite smooth with lots of fruity notes, orange and banana to name just a couple, also some cream soda.
    • Finish
The finish is a bit short and disappointing which is a shame.

It's actually very good, but is it £100 good?

At 50 it would have been a bargain, at 75 acceptable, but sadly in todays market it's right on the money.
    • Nose
Sweet and fruity on vanilla, honey, citrus, pear,

Also spicy with a licorice note and some toasted oak.
    • Taste
Sweet and spicy hot. Peppery toffee chocolate with a licorice filling.
    • Finish
Long and very "stable" finish, not much evolvement but that's OK when what's there is as good as this.

Slightly drying, with slowly fading spice.

Enjoyable everyday dram but very not impressive (and pricey for what it offers). Starts fruity then lots of drying spices.

I am angry but I will try to remain objective in my notation. He arrives with his big clogs marketeux broke down idea to make us believe that we will take the taste buds with its mysterious aromas, but we do not believe for a second and ... we're right. It is aromatically poor and above all, there is in my opinion a big defect in the mouth: the wood! In short, it's available for 100 balls. Friend's tip: if it is for drinking, abstain.
    • Nose
discreet, first on slightly dry notes of almonds and cereals, then, with a little opening, instead of fruit: apricots, green apples, white grapes. Then, it is towards a sweet register that Glenlivet Cipher evolves: frangipane, honey, wax, vanilla cream, caramel, milk chocolate. Spices also take up a lot of space with cinnamon mainly. Then, to close this festival, flowers! It's not so bad that very very classic.
    • Taste
spices, did you say spices? How to say ... Wood a lot that brings its lot of spices and drought. Behind that are caramelized apples, coffee, milk chocolate, a good dose of vanilla, and more.
    • Finish
a little caramel, a lot of spices but, fortunately, it does not last long. I am angry…

I can say that I’m pleasantly surprised by this new Glenlivet expression. It is quite atypical for Glenlivet and is quite spice orientated. That makes me think there is quite some European oak in the mix. For me this is (on smell and taste) one of the better expressions of Glenlivet in the recent years. But, yep there is a but, the lack of information and the high price are somewhat off-putting for me. It’s a 50 to max 60 euro whisky for me, solely judging on nose and palate. So, from my point of view this is yet again another pricy marketing gimmick.
All in all a surprisingly nice whisky.
    • Nose
A sweet, rich, spicy and assertive (prickly) whisky with aromas of pepper, licorice root, boiled sweets, sour candy, fennel seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cashew nuts, milk chocolate, cedarwood, cigar tobacco, bramble, subtle pineapple, grape seeds, bouquet garni, ripe plums, dried flowers (like old fashioned Potpourri), hay and subtle oak.
    • Taste
A spicy, rich, sweet yet dry whisky with aromas of white pepper, hot ginger, icing sugar, honey, vanilla, toffee, cinnamon, caramel, fennel seeds, licorice root, bayleaf, star anise, a soapy tone (hand soap), floral tones, herbal tea, hint of nectarines, white chocolate, lemon peel, tannins and creamy oak.
    • Finish
Medium long and slightly drying finish with aromas of pepper, honey, chocolate, cashew nuts, icing sugar, subtle tannins, herbal tea, cinnamon and dry oak.

Nose: Pears and bananas. Honey and
vanilla. The wood is not so dominant, but hints of vanilla and soft spices are
    present
    Palate:
Oily/creamy. More spice on the palate than the nose. Apples/pears. potentially
citrus and more honey is definitely present
    Finish:
Sweet. The fruitiness stays for a while. A bit of milk chocolate. Dries out a
    bit with spices.

Definitely at nice dram, but a bit underwhelming I must say. Especially
    given the price tag.

It's a pretty good whisky, but nothing to get too excited about.
    • Nose
Buttery and fruity with subtle beeswax, a peppery edge and a touch of glue. Notes of pineapple and ripe banana peel. Sweet vanilla, as well as a floral touch.
    • Taste
Honey with roasted almonds and bitter wood. Less fruity than the nose, a small amount of tinned pineapple and a hint of nectarine.
    • Finish
Soft and mellow. Apple peel and baked bananas. Medium in length. A tad dry.
