    Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
    • Nose
Immediately after the pouring begins, thick clouds of smoke pass over my balcony. The alcohol content of almost 58% is initially noticeable by a slight stinging in the nose, which gradually fades after 15 to 20 minutes. The dominant smoke notes are accompanied by intense citrus fruits. Ripe limes, green apples, mint, grapefruit and a noticeable vanilla sweetness set pleasant contrasts. In the background there are maritime notes (towards algae and seaweed) and a touch of oak.
    • Taste
Powerful start, coupled with a light pepperiness / ginger sharpness that settles on the tip of the tongue. The strong smoke is immediately present and takes over the flavor of the upper hand. The mouthfeel is pleasantly oily and stimulates the saliva flow. Fresh fruits are crystallizing: I perceive green apples, limes and subtle peach notes. Vanilla, mint and maritime notes follow. Fine oak notes complete the aromatic variety, leaving a slight dryness.
    • Finish
Long. Again, the smoke immediately forms the flavor foundation, which is reminiscent of a campfire on the beach. The fruity notes and vanilla show short-term presence, but overall fade very quickly. The oak spice increases and ensures a noticeable, but pleasant, dryness.

[May, 2017]  I had this dram during the Manager's Masterclass tasting at Feis Ile.

These cask strength editions usually are very carefully selected casks that represent Lagavulin at its best (and at its best maturation age to me, that is 12 years).  As a lot of members already did excellent review and tasting notes I skip this standard description here.  I like this dram best with some drops of water added that increase both its sweetness and its smokey/peaty flavours.  It takes out some of the slightly bitter/adstringent feelings of the neat dram too.

A great dram and another excellent annual edition of 12 year old Lagavulin...

    Horny part
    • Nose
Sweet ashy smoke, citrus notes, typical spicy Lagavulin nose, freshly cut wood, floral notes with lavender, chewing gum and heather in the background
    • Taste
Oily, peppery and slightly spicy with lots of smoke and light oak, citrus, creamy
    • Finish
Typical Lagavulin smoke spreads, the smoke carries everything, and the oak slowly dries everything up

http://kaypingers-whiskyblog.de/frontend/fullarticle.php?id=231 Color: white wine Nose: spicy-salty lemon, cayenne pepper, lime, vanilla, caramel, honey, maritime and smoky. First fresh and more green. This malt needs time to breathe - it gets better and better. Apples, wax, hemp rope, old ship's rope, seaweed and a pinch of iodine. Taste: Round, balanced and bursting with mighty power. Straightforward, yet harmoniously spicy - just great! The honey sweetness goes with caramel (no sugar), plus salt, pepper, iodine, seaweed, lemon, and peat, as well as smoked ham, lime, leather, vanilla, charcoal and ashes - everything you would expect from a young Lagavulin from the Bourbon Cask expected. Finish: Extremely long and with the same flavors as the taste fades away. Wet ash, charcoal and caramel remain on the tongue, accompanied by copious amounts of phenolic peat. Note: For us, the best 12yo of the Special Release Series! Finally, a direct, straight-line Lagavulin without much pettiness - CLASS! 91 points N: 89P / G: 92P / F: 91P

    • Nose
Distinctive toast of roasted aromas, peat smoke, cocoa, salt and floral notes. With time follows a sugary sweetness. Grilled lemon and pineapple; then soapy floral aromas (lilac?), iodine, bandages, fishing nets, stables, campfire at the beach or smoked fish? With water: softer, salty, citrus notes, lime, peat, medicinal accents, raw turnips, fresh wool, apple juice, lilacs and full roasted aromas. Top!
    • Taste
Heavy onset but perfectly balanced: oak, peat smoke, salt, grilled crustaceans, grilled pineapple, coffee and nutty-oily aromas. With water: perfectly balanced: citrus zest, salt, peat smoke, grilled pineapple and apples, oak and fragrant florality.
    • Finish
Very long with a perfect balancing act of fruity aromas, peat, roasted aromas and oak.

    A beast in a bottle!
    • Nose
Oompa-oompa! Having this after a rather weak expression of Smokehead. Now we're talking!

Massive coastal peat, coal, rubber, tar, not directly medicinal but maybe some menthol, some vanilla sweetness and some pepper.
    • Taste
Sensory attack at a grand scale. Huge ashy peat smoke from the start. Rather hefty warming spice feel at 57,7%, not lingering like chilli but rather more like a horse radish rush.

Rich dark and bitter chocolate. Thick creamy feel.
    • Finish
Long, quite oily, with the spicy part fading oh so slow.

  7. Flyrider scored this whisky 94 points Member Senior

Very, very intense but still well belanced between the smoke and sweet fruits in the aftertaste.

  8. Archer scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

The 12 CS always makes me feel sick again. A real hooligan. Great.
    • Nose
      90 90
Apple-sweet smoke, grated lemon. Salt. Seaweed & seaweed, but not freshly washed up, but rather in the form of Noriblättern.
If the nose gets used to the smoke, the lemon gets through, the whisky now looks fresh, light and airy. A spring day by the sea.
    • Taste
      91 91
Charcoal kills on the tongue and decomposes there into ashes. At the beginning oily, it gets dry quickly. Lemons and limes give fruit sweetness without dominating. The ash layer on the tongue gets thicker and firmer. A pinch of salt, a hint of pepper. Marine scent. In addition a medical note. Tar paper.
    • Finish
      90 90
A smoldering campfire. Dry, ashy, with over-roasted orange peel.

Had rarely such a thick and creamy Lagavulin - great stuff
    • Nose
Sweet vanilla with smoke and peat combined in a good way, hints of citrus, spices and salt - not bad
    • Taste
Very heavy oily and creamy, mellow, lots of citric notes, subtle sweetness and then a full blast of smoke and peat, more like a bonfire which I like and less medicinal
    • Finish
Long and burning, a little zesty and a tad bitter in the end

    Absolute must for Islay lovers
    • Nose
light pepperiness, beautiful citrus fruit to sweet grapefruit vanilla and a mint bush around the corner
    • Taste
Tidy start with chilli catch on the tongue the citrus notes stay with a nice sweetness, slowly it turns into beautiful ex bourbon oak and beautiful heat
    • Finish
long and warming a neat pattering campfire.

Quite honestly the 12Y CStr version I like the most throughout the last years.

Starts more smoothly than the 2015, but rises up to go on for a (nearly) never ending story on my palate.

    - april 2017 -
This 200th special is a bruiser! I like it though! it's what i expect from a Laga 12 at full power. By far the most impressive Laga 12 i've tried. The only thing holding back these yearly 12's is the price. Could do with a 10-20% price reduction...

  19. Oldpultnie scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

The better stuff for a good price.
    • Nose
A nose with all the best Islay can offer. Sweet, smoke, peat, maritime, citrus, slightly medicinal but not in a bad way and everything in a well balanced mix.
    • Taste
This is what you expect after nosing it. A good mouthfeel and perfect coating. Oily, sweet and a good mix of smoke, peat and some nuttiness with light oak.
    • Finish
Medium - long perfect finish fading out with some bitterness but a drop of water took some of the bitterness away and also made it sweeter.

What the f ** k, that's the Burner! This whisky is the best Islay whisky I've ever had. There are a couple of Port Ellens that I could rehearse, some of which were equally good. But not better. And a direct comparison with festival whiskys from Lagavulin also showed that this CS 12 yo was better, sometimes equally good. But never worse. Wonderful. Rare 98 points I want to forgive here!

Simpler 16-years in both aroma and taste / finish, nevertheless there is here both depth and complexity, the fortress, of course, adds points, gives power and pressure, but I prefer the calm and full of nuances and semitones of the 16-year-old ( at least the one that was produced 3-5 years ago).
    • Nose
Restrained, dry, burnt paper, peat, coal, lemon peel, ash, smoked meat, light tinny notes, faint shoe shoe tones, eventually opens, becomes more energetic, assertive.

Really good, honest whisky. No wood trickery, just simple, naked and raw, but mature.
    • Nose
A salty sea breeze and seaweed as well. Brine and wax too. Very gentle for such a high alcohol percentage. Sweet vanilla accompanied by plenty of fruit, like ripe banana and lemons. The peat smoke is undeniable, but never dominant.
    • Taste
Oily mouthfeel. Huge hit of peat, smoke and tar. White pepper. Very straightforward, but highly enjoyable. Hints of thyme, licorice, bitter lemons. Fairly dry. A bit too dry maybe.
    • Finish
Peat, banana and licorice. Drying and long.

Smoke complex fresh Islay whisky. The 200th anniversary version is steady as most 12 year old original bottlings from Lagavulin. But in my opinion you get an extra Islay Lagavulin touch concerning the deep Lagavulin profile. This version is also very flattering around the nose. Lagavulin did a great job on this expression.

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 8/10
    • Nose
Smoke. Coal, citrus, medicinal, wet flintstone, almost a sweet winy touch.
    • Taste
Smoke. Citrus, hay, ashes, almonds, tar.
    • Finish
Long. Smoky and clean. Very pure in it's character.

Lagavulin 12 yo 'Special Release 2016' (57.7%, OB)
Probably a very large batch. Lagavulin 12 is a kind of Porsche 911 of
whisky, everyone loves it, for good reasons. Yes, fast and reliable.
It’s to be noted that this baby is another one that celebrates the
distillery’s 200th anniversary. Colour: white wine, so refill wood. No
complains. Nose: I think it’s even simpler than its predecessors, but
that simplicity is exactly what we’re looking for here. Bauhaus whisky?
Peat smoke, tar and burnt rubber, sea spray, artichokes, and Islay mud.
With water: exceptionally almondy and waxy, with a perfect tar. Mouth
(neat): elementary, straight, direct, uncomplicated, and perfect. Bacon,
smoked fish, bitter oranges, thyme tea, bitter almonds. I find it
seriously drier than last year’s SR, but I haven’t got that one in my
hands just now, so please forget about these aimless ramblings. Now, the
peat is huge. With water: lemons! Finish: very long. How did you like
this cigar that you just chewed? Comments: I don’t know, in a way, this
baby’s akin to some young Port Ellens that we could try in the past,
even if there isn’t any feeling of brown coal this time. Do they have a
secret programme? Recreating PE at Lagavulin? And it’s integrally
distillate-driven and mature. My preferred way and style. One of the
must buys of the year, together with that perfect Kilkerran 12,
    remember? SGP:367 - 92 points.

I'm not sure I'm the biggest fan of these nuclear-powered 12yo Mad Max type 'vulins. Lagavulin really needs sherry to balance it out. That said, it's still a great and characterful whisky.
    • Nose
      87 87
Very strong. Medicinal and not just iodine. It has the whole operating room going on. It has a very sterile smell. There are some deeper notes that are really nice - charcoal, smoked fish, forest floor. It is definitely Lagavulin. Adding water gives it more of a floral aroma. Also, I can't help but note freshly opened soft plastic fishing lures. It's definitely there.
    • Taste
      94 94
Zowie. It is pure power. The phenol is so pungent there is an initial sense of Tobasco sauce. That's quickly followed by iodine, camphor, soil, swamp. It really exudes an ancient character. There's also a barbecue sauce. I have only ever gotten barbecue sauce from Lagavulin. Water again makes it more plastic like. Water is really not doing any good here. Best to take micro sips from the real deal.
    • Finish
      90 90
Iodine again. Vasoline. The barbecue sauce has transitioned to more of a sour Caroline style. Water enhances this Southern feel. BBQ burnt ends with shrimp grits and succotash. That about sums it up. This apparently is the Southern style Laga.

Only had this one once, I admit, but when I did it not only appeared to me but also a buddy of mine a bit rough around the edges compared to a few other 12 cs. Not talking about us having a problem with straight up power and austere blade-y-ness (we love the 2015 for this very reason), but just a bit unfocused. Maybe it needed some more air and time?

This is similarly excellent to the 2015 release. Subtle differences, but it’s by and large the same expression. It makes sense why this is the only Diageo special release that has been the same every year, there’s just no reason to play around with it.

This is an event of a whisky. Clearly designed to showcase the distillery profile and didn't mask it behind casks.
    Lovely stuff!
    • Nose
Vanilla cream, tarry ropes, old stone wet with sea spray (Dunyvaig castle anyone?), elemental, a cool summer ocean storm, kelp, pickled lemon rind, sour watermelon candies.
Nose is not shy and comes out to greet you, it is brash but balanced in its brashness.
    • Taste
Smoked lemon candies and salt brine (not so sweet taffy), fisherman's friend , plumes of still damp driftwood smoke, polish/lemon pledge, elemental, minerals.

    - a great combination of smoke and sweetness
    - very good to drink pure despite the 57.7%
    - Compared to its successor in 2017, it looks more complex, rounder and more balanced
    - different from the classic Lagavulin 16 years, but not worse
    • Nose
peaty-sweet nose, with strong, strong smoke (less ham smoke, more in the sweet direction), oak, toffee, fudge
    • Taste
undiluted: surprisingly sweet and soft start, toffee, fudge, caramel

    the usual big huge laga:
nose: peat, brackish water, eucalyptus honey, citrus
taste: sweeter than the other 12 yo, an initial honey side, vanilla , a great oily note and also here citrus honey, cedar, malt, and then the peat and the islay salt on the finish
final:oily, vanilla, peat, brackish water and sulfurous flavor typical of the distillery
with water : the sour and peaty side is more accentuated than the initial sweetness
to conclude, a giant..the quality standard of this distillery is extraordinarily high, we can safely say that Lagavulin represents the Mercedes of Whisky.

A very good edition, this 2016 version, which I preferred to the 2013.
    • Nose
      88 88
Instantly an invasive nose with a mixture of ink, bark, pine resin with a sweet, fruit-ish undercurrent. It gets slightly sweeter after a while with some roasted marshmallows. I find it slightly less focussed than the 13th release we had on our table before, but it is also more complex. What is particularly present is something smoky and fruity, which I can only described as smoked peach skin. There is also something of a chemical solvent, I cannot determine which exactly, and lots of farm-y notes, like stables and silage. The peat remains sweet with added touches of mint. After adding a few drops of water it becomes softer, with an additional scent of a wood fire in a chemical lab (strictly not allowed, mind you) and peach liquor.
    • Taste
      87 87
The palate is very potent with (as on the nose) lots of ink, supplemented with coal dust, bonfire smoke, and again that slightly chemical solvent thing. Rather drying with lots of pungent ashes, and very much focused, as we become to expect now from this series. A few drops of water add rounder side to it, with an even better balance. Still very focussed on peach skin, smoke, ashes, tar, ink and a few peculiar notes of plastic toys or perhaps Tupperware, which are certainly not unpleasant within the whole array of tastes. In addition, a hint of rubber appears and almonds.
    • Finish
      88 88
A long finish with more of the same, supplemented with roots, a faint hint of undefined red fruits, could be something like red berry compote or berry-flavoured sweets, and a fresh touch of lemon verbena.

Nose: sweet, deeply sooty, with lots of medicinal notes, coastal notes, shells on a beach, putty and earthy notes. As expected. Some gherkins, but there’s a gentler side too, something of butter pastry, almond cream and lemon oil. Sharp and powerful, but somehow very balanced.
Mouth: same intensity. Big peat with pepper and lemon. Smoked fish, leathery notes, ashes, wax and salted caramel. Medicinal and very coastal. Just a few fruity notes in the background. Big, big sooty notes.
Finish: very long, ashy, lemony. Perfect sharpness.Pretty much a benchmark for this medicinal, robust, hugely sooty style. I often had problems with its fierceness and dryness but for me this is slightly sweeter, more balanced and the most enjoyable batch I’ve had. Recommended.

Ordentliche Kracher, also different / idiosyncratic enough to justify the individual releases. When it was still around the 50 ¬, that was a welcome addition to the quite narrow standard range, for today's 80-100 € Diageo can nail the neatly groomed knee.
    • Nose
      Direct comparison 2015 vs. 2016:
both very strong, crispy, biscuit, grainy-sweet, vanilla, some white pepper ... salt and smoke are more restrained (compared to 16-year standard bottling), '15 is heavier, sweeter and rounder with licorice and some ricola, '16 is a bit fresher and fruity, has a light apple and lemon twist and bites a bit more and is a bit ashier (Water play tries, but does not hurt very much, you should only if it is really too sharp)
    • Taste
both: very strong, lots of pepper, vanilla, malt, '15 is also sweeter here and looks fatter, fuller, darker, the ricola note is back, '16 is thinner, but also oily, is significantly sharper (white pepper) , rather bitter than sweet, wood, coffee, cough syrup, also smokier / ashier than '15
    • Finish
both long, hot and spicy, '15 rather black pepper, ricola, liquorice, '16 white pepper, coffee, camillan, wood

Feels best neat, given some time (20-30min) to settle in the glass before drinking.

    Re-evaluated to 89pts compared to Lagavulin 8 (86), Lg5 (87) and Lg6 (88).
    • Nose
Neat: Pine, cucumber skin, a pile of wood in the rain, Humbrol enamel paints, cut green bell pepper, mashed potatoes, bong tar, eucalyptus candy and some sort of mouthwash.

With water it loses its sharpness and gains more vanilla. Vanilla ice cream by the seashore. Compared to Ledaig cask 4000248 (87pts) this Lagavulin has a general ambience of burned then extinguished wood, while the young Ledaig is more into nail polish or other beauty product sort of smells (a lady's makeup bag complete with the leather).
    • Taste
A little rough but not one bit boozy, in fact the way it's so smooth on the tongue despite its strength and youth is wonderful. Xylitol salmiak sweets, tar, and then this fresh note, like smoked toothpaste, and some rubber bands (rubber from peat, not cask). The body is quite oily but in a good way that really makes it stand out among contemporary whisky.
    • Finish
Persistent tar. Sweet and clean. Could be a little longer. Water doesn't seem to improve it that much.

This one was, for better or worse, a good deal more refined than last year’s release. I really liked the in-your-face complexity and brutishness of the 12 year old from last year, but I can’t really fault it as it was quite rich and flavourful and a fine whisky in its right.

    Reviewed in my blog: https://iwriteaboutstuffilike.com/2016/12/15/lagavulin-12-2016-release/
    • Nose
Typical Lagavulin nose, sweet, grassy peat. Rubber. Scorched fruit peels. Ash. Smoked fish. Woodsmoke. Tar. Light vanilla, light coconut. Citrus oils. Quite a few beachside notes, wet rocks, seas spray, seaweed drying in the sun, shellfish. With water the creamy porridge note I picked up on the palate shows up here in addition to some thick vanilla creme.
    • Taste
Ashy peat. Huge scorched fruit peel note. Bitter citrus. Sweet peach. Rubber. Wood oils. Dry wood tannins. A bit of a creamy malt note on the swallow. With water butterscotch and caramel pudding notes appear.
    • Finish
Long. Oily, mainly wood oils. Earthy peat. Cough Syrup. Citrus peels. Coal dust. Light wood smoke. With water menthol and peppermint notes develop.

    Excellent, no question.
    • Nose
Side-by-side with 2015 : on the nose, 2016 is unquestionnably more delicate, quite a lot of dried sand, seeshells, green olives and fresh almonds, this is just Laga 12 in its purest guise. Hugely refined, almost Port-Ellenesque with that magnificient beach-y side.
    • Taste
Less dynamic here, simpler than 2015 that just went bonkers on the palate. Here we have "more of all that", on a very pleasant dryness and the typical sweeter side of bourbon-matured Lag : lemon candy, pears, nuts and brine. Typical again.
    • Finish
Same vein, long and dry, on fleet wood, citrus, brine and blue stone.

    • Taste
Peat, pepper, some liquorice, aniseed and smoked ham. A waxy note, vanilla and virgin wood as in pine resin. Later more ashes, salty and even some gun powder and fire works.

    Colour:
    Bright amber
    Nose:
As usual direct, strong peat scents, smoldering smoke and crystal clear purity; Slowly, a cornucopia of sweet and fresh fruity nuances and pastry notes develops. Towards the end there are still notes of eucalyptus and smoked ham.
One to two drops of water make it even more lively, sweeter and spicier.
    Palate:
Light and silky soft body, surprisingly gentle and chocolate sweet, with a pinch of salt, fresh coolness and white bread baked over campfire smoke.
Water makes it a bit more restrained, still cool and oily in the mouth, the toasted nuances are slowly coming to the fore.
    echo:
Extremely long and multi-faceted farewell, initially soft with increasing pepper sharpness and noticeable smoke, towards the end still a little appetizing bitterness.
