The polished antique cabinet opened to reveal a plethora of
soft fruit desserts including baked apricot tart, chocolate cheesecake,
cinnamon and apple pie and stewed plums with brown sugar and cloves. However we
began by tasting brandy snaps with pudding wine and a little pickled ginger to
provide gentle warmth. It was only then that we noticed the honey roast
parsnips and sweet potato served with cashew nuts, fruit chutney and a mysterious
packet of tobacco. We closed the cabinet again and walked away to get a rich
cup of tea, our polished leather shoes squeaking on the old sports hall floor.
