A very interesting and idiosyncratic drop! When pouring me an old grain came to mind immediately because of the color position. The initially sour notes confirm my suspicions. Old and dark wood flavors carry this whisky, in terms of taste I can not classify this blindsample absolutely. A very interesting experience, I've never had such a taste experience and so I'm counting on a grain.
Edit: A Ben Nevis? I would not have expected that!
    • Nose
Blind tasting: Dark aromas stand out clumsily from the glass, immediately Cognac or Armagnac comes to my mind. These flavors are hard to define for me. Oily fruit flavors, a hint of liquorice, baked apple, burned grain? I have to admit, I'm a little confused.
    • Taste
Acid berries immediately mix with spicy wood. Dull and tart oak tones strike the tongue. The first impression is fresh and clear, then creates a wonderful wooden touch. Slight sharpness is distributed on the palate and on the tongue. Walnut flavor and again this oily touch.
    • Finish
The finish begins with the tart wood flavors of the taste. Again a hint of licorice and oily fruit. The flavors of the finish are closely interwoven and change constantly. At the end of the departure rancid walnuts fall into wet autumn leaves.

Phew, maybe I wasn't having a good day, but it felt very weak in terms of depth, aromas and complexity. The alcohol is only marginally well integrated.
    So overall rather disappointing.
Water only helps to a limited extent.
    • Nose
      78 78
The alcohol can be heard more clearly than the alcohol strength would have suggested.
Otherwise rather a reserved nose. Clove, cinnamon, spices and some dark orange and dark berries. But all in all very cautious.
    • Taste
      79 79
Here, too, rather cautious. A little sweet, dark forest honey, then the alcohol pushes.
    • Finish
      80 80
Dry and somewhat fruity, paired with a minimal sweetness.
But that's about it. Maybe a little grapefruit, which would then go in the direction of Ben Nevis.

Pleasant sweetness paired with great heat and a mild finish. Successful alcohol integration

Not so much my thing - to shoot, too musty, the bitterness of the nose I like not so good
    • Nose
Oyster sauce, licorice, cloves, unpleasant plant bitterness, wax, musty berry sweetness, red wine, lavender, burnt caramel
    • Taste
sweet, slightly alcoholic, grapes, fermented pear, bitter sweet quince, some mint, grape seeds, with prolonged chewing - beautiful fruity intense portnotes
    • Finish
musty sweet, resinous, spicy, bitter vegetable with mint

Blindverkostung Tip: Madeira Cask? Alcohol approx. 55% .Toll! think so 12 Jahre. 90 points!
    • Nose
Teriyaki sauce, very spicy, fermented fruit, Madeira wine?
    • Taste
strong alcohol but great, wonderfully sweet, vanilla, a little plum, a lot of spice
    • Finish
just fine! Seasoning and sweetness will last forever. Subtle bitterness

It is delicious, but the woodiness is certainly not for everyone.
    • Nose
Thick sweet raisins, oak, orange jelly, damp tobacco, slightly spruce needles, men's chocolate, gradually a slight spiciness comes through, which I know of other Ben Nevis
    • Taste
Strong onset, directly very sweet, chocolaty, again orange, slightly dry, cocoa powder, the wood brings a lot of spice
    • Finish
Very bitter to very oak spicy, the sweetness sticks to the palate, the bitterness dominates the back

  9. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Wonderful cocoa bomb (you do not have to suck off 20 side aromas from your fingers), very intense, pleasant, dry, a Hunni is clear. Delicious evening party!
    • Nose
dry, velvety, slightly spicy-hot, cocoa, quite closed, -> + water: cocoa is more intense, molasses, walnut, maple syrup ... Sachertorte, a hint of pickled black cherries - intense, but velvety, very pleasant
    • Taste
a drop of berry fruit liqueur, lots of cocoa, aromatic woody, walnut, old leather, tart and noble
    • Finish
long and dry, oral mucosa contracts, cocoa, coffee, pepper

    • Taste
full-bodied, creamy and sweet, sherry, plums, lots of chocolate.

Tip: Guess who has more alcohol than you suspect, as this is super integrated. I really like 89 points

    - Speyside or a Ben Nevis
    - 15 to 18 years
    - 49 to 54%
    - Sherry cask
    • Nose
Dates, shoe polish, old, dry leather, then heavy fruity, blood oranges, juicy wholegrain bread, the fruit notes are stronger, candied apple, some sourdough, mushrooms, later more candied and chocolate coated fruit
    • Taste
very creamy, marzipan, chocolate, elegant on the go and slightly spicy, no alcohol to feel
    • Finish
dry, long with a little cinnamon, then becomes slightly herbaceous

  13. Torfding scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
sticky sweets and a lot of sweet, drying fruits (figs, dates, open oranges, raisins), cinnamon, warm walnuts, spiced chocolate, schnapps (in the direction of beans), some fragrant wood and a bit of coffee and cocoa in the back
    • Taste
heavy, sweet and spicy, oak, dark chocolate, gingerbread spice, some coffee and orange peel
    • Finish
medium to long; warm, dark exotic fruits, Christmas market, oak and bitterness, dark chocolate, a torrid PX

  14. Hobbit did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

me as a PX fan very well! Absolutely classic nose, the taste is
but not completely overloaded, here come clear oak tones and bitterness
out. Good age and a super integrated cask strength. Delicious!

Edit: after now a 3/4 bottle, the above notes can be considered obsolete. I have seldom had a whisky with such penetrating notes of sulfur, against which neither water nor time in the glass or in the bottle help.

I almost believe I was given a wrong sample at the time.

  15. mds51 scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

The nose is just seductive, the taste depends on what you like. Such a sherry bomb, as the nose promises it is not, but it feels more like an older whisky, where the oak is well dominated. This is not necessarily negative to look at, I like it :)
    • Nose
Strong sweetness, raisins, molasses, sugar cane, gingerbread, dark black cherries, cinnamon, oranges, star anise, a touch of oak.
    • Taste
Short sweetness (sour cherry juice, orange juice, vanilla), then follows already the oak, dark chocolate, coffee
    • Finish
The bitter character remains and turns into a dark men's chocolate with high cocoa.
