[October, 2016]  I had this dram during a "Lagavulin Bicentenary" tasting at Bonn.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 90.  I took no detailed notes.

There is no accounting for taste...

[June, 2016]  I had this dram during a "Feis Ile 2016" tasting at Bonn.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 90.  My notes state another very good Feis Ile release of Lagavulin but I like the two previous editions (2014, 2015) better.

Smoke. Sweet citrus fruits (some oranges way in the back), wet flintstone, nuts, earth and some moss (after a warm summer day).

Taste
Smoke. Sweet citrus fruits, hay, ashes, some wine oak influence, some dried fruits, some smoked chocolate.

Finish

Long to very long. Smoky and sweet citrus fruits again.

Comments
Great expression by Lagavulin. It is not to much into the wine cask direction although there is a distinct influence on the citrus Lagavulin profile going a sweet path (oranges etc.). Lovely but not comparable to the Feis Ile 2015 version. More like the Jazz 2015 concerning the fruity part.
Concerning price/performance ratio: 8/10

Quite oily and even buttery at first. Then some cake dough and salt. Apples and lemon liqueur. Some earth. Very refined. Requires a little bit of effort, but it's well worth it.  Some tobacco, hay and a hint of moss.

Taste

Begins slightly dusty, then some oil followed by lemon, cake dough. Then some roots and salt in the development with a sugary sweetness. Some green olives. It's a little bit thinner than i would have expected though. The peat is quite restrained.

Finish

Very long. Some raw fish over there, slightly herbal.  Oily, maritime after taste.

Comments

sample.

Great, despite the slightly thin palate. Peated whisky as i like it, i.e. not an overbearing one trick pony peat influence.

‘Blind Islay fury’ was a blind tasting organised by Whiskylounge. We started here: WB

N: Rather in a similar vein to the Islay-less Springbank albeit less fruity [>raisins] and favouring the mechanical whiffs of heavy machinery workshops alongside onion-fresh vegetal and hammy farmyard notes.

T:  Very dry arrival, one that cries 'water'. Even so, it stays endlessly dry and rather one-dimensional but i think the previous, robust Springbank WB is still lingering. The subtleties of this dram will have to be gleaned when time and conditions are more favourable. Woody-fresh chocolate notes herald the later stages,...

F: ,... continuing dry & smokey, a touch medicinal with nuts & chocolate.

C: On the one hand this reminds me of that ghostly Girvan WB that was,… 52 years old. Now it's been revealed [as an 18yo Lagavulin], on the other hand its hard to believe it possesses that age, it being so light and airy - although i heard Lagavulin tends to favour 3rd fill cask activity for their core 16yo yet this is a combination of American oak and Bodega european casks. What do i know, it’s a interesting one. On to number 3 WB.
