Whisky Reviews for Bowmore 2001 CA

- Not too complex, but a good and not too aggressive malt without big barrel influence. Absolutely with water to enjoy.
At first a clear alcoholic note. Resinous wood. Then slightly fruity smoke. After some time white grapes appear under the smoke.
Strong, intense, the smoke dominant and yet integrated into pleasant maritime tones, which can only gain space after a few moments. Pepper settles on the tongue. With a little water he can be tamed and becomes much more pleasant.
Salt and seaweed continue to fill your mouth. Here this whisky experiences a very nice phase. After a long time the keg seems to get through, but not very intense.
- A light, 'naked' Bowmore. With water the nose gives some Vicks, warm tortillas and printer ink. The taste is very even both neat and diluted, but it is a bit flat and the finish is fleeting. Tasty, but I think there are way better examples of the style out there such as Elements of Islay Bw5 (bolder on the wood) or DL O&R 21yo 1990-2012 (similar to this but much deeper).
In the tasting I had it at, this bottle split the crowd. A few loved it, most considered it ok but not great (I was in this group) and some genuinely hated it.
- A strong and solid Bowmore - not bad
Touch of peat and smoke, salty see breeze, iodine, more on tropical fruits - starts really good
Punchy, very salty, seaweed, a lot of peat and smoke - the good one - oaky notes coming up, subtle sweetness
With water: the sweetness comes out better and makes it rounder and smoother
Long and warm, more oaky notes coming up in the end - probably even a tad bitter dry in the end
- First impression without water: Disappointing!
Hot alcohol, taste of bitter lemon, not balanced, too bad!
