[January, 2019] I never had any above-average Glenkinchie so far - but to be honest: I did not have a lot Glenkinchie during the last 20 years at all. Time to change this (or maybe both?) ...
...both! This is the first Glenkinchie that I like and despite it is not a stunner it is very interesting, for sure. It offers a Traditional Lowland Scotch profile with some unusual aromas and flavours that are fun to discover ...better than all the official stuff I tasted from this rarely bottled distillery so far.

The colour is pale gold and the nose offers that typical grassy-sugary profile most Lowland drams own. But contrary to Bladnoch or Rosebank this is much more simple, missing the fruits and honeys. Nonetheless it is pretty nice by Glenkinchie standards and it enfolds further upon breathing. Some spices, waxes and a rather strange aroma pop up - is this rhubarb or eucalyptus? Maybe hints of both (or something completely different)...

The taste is more complex and now some fruits are there, too. All is imbedded in a vanilla-toffee-marzipan structure that is delicious but a little too dominant until the spices and some bitter flavours (green tea and the like) kick in. This is not too bad at all. Water turns the nose even more grassier what drives it out of balance and both taste and finish get increasingly bitter so be careful - I like the neat dram best.

The whisky arrives warming and a little coating on the palate with no distracting moments. The finish is of medium lenth and gets more spicier with that strange flavour popping up again (rhubarb or eucalyptus or both). There are no bitter or drying moments here either, the wood is just about perfect in this setting.
