    Dried Pineapple

Two years! That’s how long ago it was since I last tried a Longmorn. But when Bob, a whisky buddy from my neighborhood, came over with a special bottle he had received for his birthday, I realized I had missed out on something. Now, before trying that particular bottle, I’ll first try an entry level version of this Speysider to get the palate going. I’ll do that with this Longmorn Distiller’s Choice.

The nose is less sweet than expected. I get some semolina, oranges, a hint of marzipan and starfruit with some wood. Some apple sauce, coconut and more wood. Slowly but surely it starts to lean towards virgin oak, it would seem. And a tad musty.

The body is very light, unfortunately. It is candy-like sweet on caramel and orange juice, some dried pineapple and raisins. Good prickle of the alcohol, without becoming hot. This is a lot better than the nose promised.

The finish is short, but soft and sweet.

Typical entry level malt from this distillery. Card player’s whisky, so to speak. But 60 EUR is a bit steep for what you get.

A basic whisky which is probably a little too much on the young side.
    • Nose
Smells young, spirity with lots of alcohol prickles. With a little breathing it turns to green apples on the sour side, new oak providing some spice.
Has a little Aberlour element to it.
    • Taste
The fruits on the sour side are there, a little green apple some red grape skins. New oak spice bringing a little life.
    • Finish
      Short with soft new oak

Tasted at Story Tellers: Tasting Whisky in January 2017

a really sweet and friendly dram. lots and lots of candy. a higher abv would do it good though, at 40% it is just too easy going.
