Whisky Reviews for Talisker Dark Storm

  1. LDB scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

Quite unspectacular, with a metallic touch. Rather smoky, but also too sweet. Not my cup of dram. Maybe a party bottle some of your guests might cherish after a dozen drinks... I would prefer the 10yo any time.

  2. KB201 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

The Talisker Dark Storm matures in heavily charred oak barrels. This approach gives the fine drop an extremely intense intensity and gives it a lot of power. This makes the Dark Storm one of the smokiest bottlings from the Talisker Distillery.
    • Nose
Smoke and salt, very maritime, with spicy impressions and oak, with fruity-sweet accents.
    • Taste
Initially fruity, with notes of currant and liquorice, then a rush of smoke and spices.
    • Finish
Long lasting and sweetly smoky with spicy oak.

Aroma: open, caramel sweetness, ripe peach, lots of wood, ash, light smoke, citrus marmalade, minerality, lime, sea tones. Over time, the sweetness intensifies, aromas of cocoa, chocolate glaze, iodine, seafood appear. Calm, even aroma, with a bias towards sweetness and wood.

Taste: bright, black pepper, caramelized sugar, boiled condensed milk, cloves, orange peel, smoked prunes, oak tannins, minerality.

Finish: medium length, black pepper, caramel, zest, wood, bitter, with minerality and ash that remains at the very end.

    Score: 84

Bottom line: a solid NAS release, sweetness, wood and signature smokiness, everything goes well. Whisky, although simple enough, evokes only positive emotions.

Evidently young. Some depth but lacks the refinement of the 10 year old.
    • Nose
Malt, sharp peat, red fruit, citrus.
    • Taste
Pepper, red fruit, peat, mild honey.
    • Finish
      Smoke and pepper. Some honey.

Balance: aroma, taste and aftertaste - as if I tried three different specimens
    • Nose
very pronounced smell of ozone (as after the rain), frosty freshness, sea breeze, somewhere in the background raisins
    • Taste
smoke, smoked fish, hazelnuts, dates, wood-berry
    • Finish
      average, ash, smoke, appear coals
