Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 1997 TWCC

    nose
Honey. Bee honey. But pungent alcohol that makes the smell a bit unpleasant. Leave something behind ... wouldn't give him the 18 years that way. Yes, it gets better, let stand again for 5 minutes. Ah much better now. Almost soft and the alcohol is almost gone. Furthermore, honey, a little vanilla, cane sugar, slightly waxy. Subtle sherry, some cinnamon and caramel. Very slightly mineral.

    taste
Great, slightly sherry-ripened clynelish, waxy and now clearly mineral. That's how I like that. Furthermore brown sugar and cinnamon, but also mint and a little pepper. Salty and then very dry mineral. Great!

    Exit
Peppery, a little hot and slightly tingly on the tongue. Dry, tart and very mineral. Again the honey and wax. Light sherry flavors.

    Conclusion
Great refill sherry maturation with a typical distillery profile. Really good with a little time in the glass.

As expected, TWCC does not disappoint again. However, this bottling can not quite match that of other bottlers. For the distillate does not fit 100% to the barrel.
    • Nose
The first impression reveals a fruity sherry nose: pears and light grapes. These aromas disappear relatively quickly and are replaced by aromas of sawdust, wax and furniture polish. Later comes flaxseed oil.
    • Taste
The taste also begins with a slight sherry impact. After that take over honey, some oak (bitterness), a slight pungency and citrus fruits.
    • Finish
In the finish, the sharpness is stronger and the citrus notes dominate. Overall, the finish could be a bit longer.

Despite the 18 years of maturation, much of the Clynelish character is recognizable, I like the taste the best but at this distillery the bar is very high for me and this does not make it all over. Older Clynelish from Bourbon barrels are often better.
    • Nose
Lemon zest and orange peel, fresh and fruity, some varnish, the typical wax note is also there but also some glue, Spüli, butter bread paper, candle wick, vanilla, rooibos tea, bamboo, cloudy apple juice
    • Taste
very sparkling texture without being too heavy, waxy, again lemons, lemongrass, iced tea and some pepper, malty and grainy
    • Finish
the described texture is now also in the finish in the throat, cough drops, medium-long with fruity appeal but also significantly harsh

By using the 2nd Fill Sherry Cask, the beautiful Clynelish character that I like so much is well preserved.

Clynelish 18 yo 1997/2016 (51.6%, TWCC, sherry, 141 bottles)  If I remember well, TWCC stands for The Whisky Cask Company or something. Ah, unbridled Swiss creativity! Now, careful with Clynelish plus sherry… Colour: gold. Nose: raw bitter chocolate and a new box of cigars. Some mint, some moist garden peat, some walnuts, and a touch of mustard. And mushrooms. Weird? Not at all. With water: our beloved old tweed jacket after a long walk under the rain. Dogs aren’t that far away. Mouth (neat): immensely perfect. Smoky oranges and waxed kiwis, walnut wine, and more cigars. A drop of brine in the background, and a dollop of grapefruit juice. With water: the oak speaks out, with liquorice, herbal teas, saps, chocolate, toasts… Finish: very long. Oranges, chocolate, wax, and chlorophyll. Comments: less well-chiselled than the Wemyss, but spicier and more complex. Okay, same score.SGP:462 - 90 points.
