This is definitely old skool whisky with a profile which is extinct. Not to compare with the current versions of HP 18yo.
    • Nose
Dusty nose at first with light touches of grapefruit and lemon. Followed by cut grass and green apples. Some flowers to even slightly vegetal notes. Heather. More on oak later on. Whiff of smoke at the background. It's all very soft and gentle.
    • Taste
Quite punchy to be honest. Creamy and chewy. Lots of aniseed and liquorice. Peel-zest as well. Short bread. Fresh cedar wood. Reminds me of well made Italian grappa (which I like a lot) in a sort of way. A little bit of smoke is coming through.
    • Finish
Medium long. Spice of white pepper and nutmeg. A little ginger. Liquorice again at the end.

[February, 2004]  I had this during the 5th Anniversary Tasting of MaRa at Limburg.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 95.  My notes state a strong OBF (adhesive glue) and a very interesting nose on old byre, cheese (a nice one, not the "stinking socks") lemon grass and buttered toffee.  All very gentle and nicely balanced.  The taste is all about peaty flavours what is surprising as there were no peaty aromas in the nose at all.  It then gets earthy and later buttery.  The finish is of medium length and enjoyable.  A very interesting dram as the nose and the taste are completely different (what happens not that often) -   but both are very delicious...

The line-up of this tasting was absolutely stunning:

Yes, this was flabbergasting even by the high standards of the early 2000's...

    • Nose
      90 90
Reminds me of my grandparents' cupboard. Ricola pastilles, Wybert liquorice and ginger. Apple, anise and a little leather. Something like a cognac as well.
    • Taste
      89 89
An ashy type of peat which makes this one instantly recognisable as an HP, even though it's one from ages ago. That's remarkable. Again the Ricola, including the herbs and the honey. Furthermore vanilla, apple and plum.
    • Finish
      89 89
Ricola, vanilla, peat, fig, honey, apple and herbs.

Absolutely nothing like HP 18 today, quite a simple profile but it works really well, at 50%+ I am sure it would have been a few points higher, but a great composition.
    • Nose
      90 90
Hints of grapefruit & honey at first, possibly faint hints of lime and some of the trademark heather.
Carrot & swede mash is the next thing to surface followed by some nice peat notes and it is all very restrained.
    • Taste
      92 92
Mouth coating, thick and chewy which I was not expecting at 43%, the peat is subtle but really lovely and the fruit is of the stewed fruit salad variety.

There is a really nice sherry and peat combination here, light sherry but beautifully weighted and well balanced, the peat is in the background but it is of the elegant variety, subtle if you like.
    • Finish
      90 90
Not long, approaching medium , getting creamier and actually the citrus notes are increasing

Wow how different from today's tastes, a unique piece of old HP.
    • Nose
Floral. Citruses, green apple, herbals, camphor, spicy oak, forest fruits, peat and smoke.
    • Taste
Refined and creamy. Peat, oak, smoke, pepper, nutmeg, vanilla and citruses.
    • Finish
      Long, spicy.

Could not live up to the high expectations.. An atypical HP which tasted quite fresh but too one-sided...The nose was the best part!

This is completely different from all the Highland Park expressions I have tasted so far. The aromas mainly are light and fruity yet there is an distinct creaminess to this whisky that makes it almost sirupy and gives a feeling of depth. They don't make them like this anymore. It needs quite some time to open up as at the start there is a dusty and stale aroma that overpowers the fruity side of this dram.
All in all a lovely Highland Park from yesteryear.
    • Nose
A remarkably fresh, creamy and fruity whisky with aromas of berries (red currants, blueberries, elderberries), green apple, pear, hint of smoke, ginger, old books, fresh floral tones, grass, vanilla, acacia honey, peach, hint of new leather, subtle orange, candied lemon zest and a hint of oak.
    • Taste
A creamy, sweet and rich whisky with aromas of acacia honey, white pepper, hint of peat smoke, apple, pear, grapes, berries, icing sugar, ginger, subtle stale tone, grains, hint of fennel seeds, floral tones, grass, hay, earthy tones, vanilla, citrus, hint of butterscotch, cedarwood and subtle oak.
    • Finish
A medium length and sweet finish with aromas of subtle sweet smoke, ginger, white pepper, floral tones, honey, fennel seeds and subtle oak.
