1707) Springbank, 1997/2016, 18YO, Sherry Wood, Private Cask

Tight initially with plenty of polish. Deep salt sunk into hot and rich chocolate lava, flowing with heavy motion to spice mortal. Mouthfill with oak and salt, occasional ripe fruit emerged but irrelevant, the dominant wood has it all its way. Medium long perhaps, wood mellowed soul, lack grips.

Obviously oak driven, with heavy sherry notes, dong guai (Chinese herbs), and Chinese ointment. The Springbank-ness appear once it opened up, with the mineral and coastal notes. Liquorice, and slightly minty. More dried fruits, dark prunes after a wee sip.

Oily and heavy on the mouth, prominent oakiness, slightly bitter. Liquorice candy, with some sweetness. Slightly salty.
    • Finish
      86 86
Long and warm, pretty heavy on oak tannin, espresso.

Not much you can say about a dram as good as this. Nose, Palate and Finish, winner winner winner.
    • Nose
Light smoke, minerally and a hint of brine, we are definitely at Springbank. Dried mangoes with a delicate coal smoke.
    • Taste
Big delivery. So much sweetness, fruity sweet, still with those mangoes. The smoke and brine are powerful but in good balance with the mangoes. Some salted raisins and a little limestone.
    • Finish
LONG smoky, minerally, limestone. Classic Springbank finish

The nose is not very spectacular but when it is in the mouth you have incredible sweet but on the other hand also dry sherryness. The Springbank comes through after a while and keeps its character. Super complex and well chosen cask by SCOMA. The espresso finish is the „cherry on the cake“ as we Germans say!

Conclusion: For me one of the best Springbanks in the age. It's not a simple malt you just pour. This malt needs water and time. But then bring he has a heavy nose load that makes his nose work. For the taste he needs at least as much water otherwise he is too violent, but also worth it. A great malt with many corners and edges not the Mainstream is and for that very reason of me Got 92 points.
    • Nose
Alcohol and woody bitter substances with smoked spices, Sherry, light sweet citrus note in the background, quite light Chocolate caramel, slightly spicy smoked bacon but also blackberry, pear and yeast, banana?
    • Taste
Without water: again alcohol, woody bitterness, sherry The alcohol covers the wonderful body.
Needs a lot of water, then: Sweet slightly bitter wood, almost medicinal Autumn fruits, blackberry, stone pears all the mouth drying. next to it slight yeast taste and clear Sherry and bitterness and sweetness change again and again.
    • Finish
Medium to long finish taking the fruits with the bitterness vie.
