  1. St. Pauli scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

Great nose but a rather disappointing palate and finish. It starts all very fruity and flowery, but as soon as you have the whisky in your mouth, it is rather astringent and not so friendly anymore.
    • Nose
      83 83
Very light and flowery/fruity, high on esters. Lillies, orange blossom, lychee, apple. There is an oily malty nose behind all this, just as some spices from the wood.
    • Taste
      75 75
Light-bodied, but not as expressive as on the nose. It has some acidity and dryness/bitterness from a clear spicy, almost artificial side (mainly ginger, grape pip) which impedes the flowery side to blossom fully (although it can be detected).
    • Finish
      76 76
Short, spicy and still giving an artificial, chemical impression. Ginger, rose water, plastic, apple.

    RATING: 87pts – |87 – 89 (B+) → Great| — Always nice to have a bottle of this.
    • Nose
      88 88
The nose has a brilliantly light and creamy profile with hints of apple souffle, ripe melon and gentle peaches.
    • Taste
      87 87
The taste is very soft and slightly sweet with notes of estery fruits, vanilla cream and delicate honeysuckle.
    • Finish
      87 87
The finish is medium, quite simple but neat with notes of vanilla cream, sweet apples and flowers.

  3. wisekyofcourse scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

rather disparate nose, on vanilla, dry wood, on white and yellow fruits, a little macerated on apple, apricot
    a little chocolate too
the mouth stays on the same scents with a more grassy side, and more prominent spices
    sweet and honeyed sensation
the final without much change and short.

The first time I tried this whisky and was pleasantly surprised. A calm and clear drink.
    • Nose
      87 87
Sweet as prune jam, walnuts, a little instant coffee.
    • Taste
      86 86
sweet, prunes, dried fruits, cherry jam.
    • Finish
      86 86
The aftertaste is sweet, calm, and soft.

  11. Highlander65 scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

Very particular whisky, rich in nuances, complex, with a nice mix of flavors.
    • Nose
A wave of ripe fruit immediately stands out on the nose, not very sweet. After a while the malt comes out, a good fruit tart.
    • Taste
On the palate it is surprising because it changes radically from the nose: fresh and balsamic, slightly mentholated, then you feel a spicy note (pepper), a little peat and finally a vague sensation of bitter licorice
    • Finish
Not very long finish but leaves a clean and pleasantly fresh mouth

Well crafted, it tastes a little bit artificial or designed. It just has nothing special, neither aromas nor nose.

Delivers an array of light fruity flavours. A little outside the realm of scotch I’m accustomed to drinking but not vastly different from a fruity Speysider. You will get a bit of that Japanese character here, however it didn’t really stand out to me the way that Yamasaki 12 grabbed my attention. Decent, though it’s certainly not worth the price of it.

    ¥3680 / 700ml @ Seiyu.

    Appearance: Straw golden.

Nose: Butterscotch, honey, stone fruit, pear, caramel, just a touch of smoke. Cooked apples.

Palate: Soft, more smoky, estery fruits, pear and apple, pepper, vanilla, oak, honey. Soft, medium body.

Finish: Peppery, oaky, hot, honey, vanilla. Stone fruits.

With Water: Nose a bit shallower. Flavors come out a bit better without so much heat. Buttery, smooth, rich.

Overall: Nice whisky. Easy but relatively complex in that subtle, Japanese way. Pretty decent for the retail price. Not worth premium prices.

Pretty well balanced on the palate and the shy leathery notes are good - not bad overall

    • Taste

Little punchy, oily, good sweetness, little fruitiness, fine notes of oak wood, more nutty notes, very little and good leather notes - not bad
    • Finish
      86 86
      Medium long, warm

    Part of a Japanese lineup

More characterful than the others, I think it’s pretty average whisky at best. I’d drink a bottle happily for a fair price, which of course this is not. Supply and demand blah blah blah, but as a drinker it’s not worth it. As with most Japanese I’d say it’s refined and without any flaws, but also not that interesting.

Edit: I was slipped this blind from a friend and without any bias I can say it’s a very solid malt. Quite naked and spirit driven with a nice soft sweetness. He informed me it’s also cheaper than I thought, at just over $100cdn. Blind I’d give it an 85, so my score isn’t much different, but it’s a great blind to put away the hype and marketing Japanese whisky has achieved. It’s helpful to tear down the barriers in your mind and see whisky for how you enjoy it, and nothing else. I wouldn’t turn down a dram if offered; it’s very quaffable stuff.

Aroma: open, delicate, meadow herbs and flowers, honey honeycombs, bread crumb, canned lollipops, mineral-salty, moist lime, pleasant wood, something similar to a humidor, dry boards. In the distance, light smoky notes make their way. Quite complex and multicomponent, something fades away, fading into the background, and something on the contrary begins to play stronger and with other faces. Very good, I liked it!

Taste: sweet-spicy, scattering of spices, black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, bitter zest, salty-mineral, tannin-wood.

Finish: grains of salt, mineral water, spices, resinous wood, grassy bitter, light caramel sweetness. Of medium length, delicately, spices and tannins gradually turning into salt and mineral dryness.
    Rating: 86
Bottom line: delicate and delicate at all stages, verified in Japanese, I really liked the fragrance, constantly offering some other new nuances. The taste is already cut in half, from what the scent promised, but everything is exactly adjusted and pleasant.

    Colour: gold.
Nose: malt notes, apple peel, sweet fruits, grass, apples, croissant, perfume, oil, baked cake.
Mouth: sour apples, grass, caramel, oak, pepper, berries, perfume.
Finish: long with spices, vanilla, grass, oak, fruits, berries, green pears notes.
Miyagikyo is a well balanced, tasty, but simple young whisky. I gave 85 points.
