Whisky Reviews for Ben Nevis 1996 TWA

The initial skepticism about the bright color and a probably exhausted barrel, gives way to the realization that a refill sherry barrel is just the thing, in order not to overlay the character of the whisky. This filling is fantastically harmoniously balanced and the alcohol is very well integrated.
    • Nose
Although the color does not suggest it, the sherry influence in the nose is clearly visible. Chocolate mixes with exotic fruits such as coconut, peach and figs, plus raisins, cream and rosehip tea.
    • Taste
Interestingly, in the taste of the barrel influence falls significantly lower. The oily texture offers notes of bananas, ripe tangerines and a slight oak influence.
    • Finish
The finish is medium in length and is wonderfully creamy with a very subtle sharpness in the background. The taste is dominated by the sweetness, acidity and bitterness of a sugared grapefruit.

Elegant and gentle arrival, I find it very soft and pleasant. Fruity and just the nice amount of wood. Citrus fruits like apple and limes. Suddenly a rush of rocky and stony notes which you always find near some small streams, and sort of waxy. Nothing too powerful, which showcase all the notes harmoniously. Quite similar to the Clynelish 1997 Archives I just tried.

Wonderful fruitiness, just the right amount of sweetness on it. Liquorice, more fruitiness. Peaches, nectarines, apples, wonderful. Nice oakiness too.

Finish is not long, but it leaves a very pleasant and mouth-watering freshness on your tongue. Fruit notes - apples, oranges, peaches are still present from nose to finish. Excellent.

He is delicious. A few drops of water are good for him. I like Ben Nevis. These yellow-fruity sherry casks are also good for Ben Nevis.
    • Nose
Fudge. He is relatively yellow-fruity. Peach. Quince Gelle. Cooked ringlots. Yellow apple. In addition, notes that remind of crumb cake. Subliminally some green tea. Citrus fruits also provide a cooling component. Kaba powder. Wet wood.
    • Taste
Pretty creamy and sweet. Forest honey. Nougat. Caramel. Peach ice tea. Apricot jam. Physalis. Then comes the oak. It tingles and the salivation begins. Then again sweet. Sugar beet. Then citrus. Lemon tea.
    • Finish
Nuts. Oranges covered in chocolate. Oak.

I don`t like the nose on this one it smells like a mixture of varnish and wet grass (or similar), then lashings of cream.
I am afraid the palate is not nice either, it is so bad I am unable to do a tasting note, yuk.
This was a 5cl sample, not sure if it was compromised in some way but to be honest knowing who sent me it I very much doubt it, just not suited to my palate I think.

Moderate finish, though wish it was longer for the flavors that it imparts
    • Nose
Citrus, stone fruit, chocolate, apple cinnamon oatmeal, hint of menthol, oak
    • Taste
Citrus, sweet fruit cocktail, waxy, milk chocolate, minerals
    • Finish
Creamy pepper sauce, apricot jelly, oak

N- Ripe pomelo, or perhaps grapefruit, tropical or subtropical? Well it
doesn't matter, both just smells good anyway. Smokes earl grey, honey,
and porridge-y, savoury marmite. Some pungent white onion, oily with tinge of
    savoury umami drifting somewhere.

P- Delicious and broad malt sweetness, wise refill butt that didn't kill the tropical
(or subtropical) fruits characters. Still very fresh for a 19YO,
layers of sunflower seed at the tail. However, minimal cask influence
also means that this is somehow one dimensional, very safe but lacking depth. F- Long, wash down with sunflower seed, follow by medicinal waxy and
dry mouthfeel. Zesty spicy coats. Fragrant of velvet nut oil extract.
