When I come across such a delicious sample, I always regret that I did not have time to buy a whole bottle at the original price.

Very complicated. Immediately smoked fish on cherry wood. Further dried fruits (raisins, dried apricots, figs). Marine and medicinal notes (iodine and algae)
    • Taste

The body is very dense, it can be chewed.
Charcoal, smoked eel with fruit garnish - sweet apricot, overripe pineapple, berry sourness, a little lemon peel.

Medium on peat and sweets. Maybe sweeter than I wanted.

  7. Cask1988 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Ledaig matured in sherry casks. Most of the time a treat already but several bottlings are exceptional. Luckily I was given a sample by a friend to try and judge myself.
    • Nose
The initial nose is a bit closed but it already shows exceptional quality. Dark red fruit like in forest fruits tea and dry hints of tobacco and a whiff of peat. There is a musty layer to it which I like a lot! A bit of water and time in the glass give the nose more outspoken and intense flavors. Leather joins the party as well as burnt sugar and chalky hints. Also the more dirty/stable flavors present themselves a bit better. The rough character Ledaig is known for.
    • Taste
Intense flavors on the palate! Cocoa, dark chocolate, espresso beans and dark spices. Ashes, black berries, red grapes. Wow, this is fantastic stuff! Water softens it up a bit but definitely doesn’t make it less tasteful. This is excellent stuff. Thick bodied and very richly flavored.
    • Finish
Long, extremely long. The kind of finish you will still taste after brushing your teeth.
Hints of old leather, antique furniture but also some kind of grassy notes like in hay or sun dried grass. If gives the finish a fresh twist which is incredibly tasteful! Again a chalky feeling at the end.

I don’t get why this superb dram doesn’t get a higher average. I sure as hell like it a lot!

Very beautiful whisky. Peaty, yes, but as dominant as you would expect, red fruits to the front. Very pleasant.
    • Nose
      88 88
Immediately a very full nose, smoke, roasted meat, dark red fruits, prunes, berries. Sweetness as well, warm sweet waffles, quite some alcohol. Later on more tobacco and woodfire smoke.
    • Taste
      89 89
Powerful, pepper, fruity, red fruits with the peat and smoke put a bit backwards. Prunes, raisins, full body. Honey, some floral hints, pickering alcohol.
    • Finish
      89 89
More smoky at the front now, ashy and red fruits, prunes and peaches, pretty long finish. Pretty smooth as well, honey, floral. More smoke again in the finish later on.

    88/100

Water is essential here for me. Really brings it together. It’s a hot mess without it. I have to say I really didn’t like it at first, but given plenty of time and water it really opened up, became much richer and more cohesive. I would have guessed laphroaig blind because of the medicinal notes. Seriously though I had this pegged at 82 at first and after some time and playing with water it’s now at 88. Had to pour a side by side of the same malt with and without water and what a difference! The benefit of a cask strength whisky.

I know lots of people who found it too sulphury. I don't mind and really like it... but with moderation. So one less point than previously.
    • Nose
Typical peaty sherry nose with the Ledaig touch. Farmy and sulphury at first with smoked meat and barbecue sauce. Leathery, slightly briny. Aeration brings chocolate, tobacco, prunes.
    • Taste
Punchy and rich. Attack on dried fruits (raisins, figs), spices and tobacco. Smoky, dirty, meaty, sulphury again.
    • Finish
      Long, smoky, spicy, sulphury.

A bit dirty sherry influence but manages to stay balanced...

only some slightly rubbery sulphury sherry notes on the nose which after a good 15minutes of breathing start to diminish..then you get leathery notes, oranges, smoked apricot compote. nice peat and briny ledaig notes in the background

the palate is very complicated and nicely heavy and smoky with peaches, orange glazed smoked meat, a lot of sea salt, earthy smoke, even touches of  weed, chocolate, dried mango...

92 after a good breathing for the nose to clean a bit

around 89 for the nose but a fantastic 93 palate..

This was fantastic, every sip was an absolute delight.
    • Nose
The first thing that came to me when I put my nose to the glass was the inside of an old radio, there is also old leather, old wood and some slow cooked meat. There is a strong sulphur smell but it is no way unpleasant . There is caramel chocolate, a little whiff of tripe and some pipe tobacco.
    • Taste
This has very strong flavours, full bodied it's nice and chewy and earthy , the sherry mixes well with the peat,  very well balanced and is very drinkable straight as it is,  it's almost like a mud stout.
    • Finish
A very long finish with chocolate, Cuban cigar and some wood to chew on, the sherry takes a bow on the death.

    Colour: Dark Amber

    Body: Full

Nose: Really wonderful mix of sweet Sherry and dirty smoke. A clean sweetness, earthy malt, coal, inner tube rubber, a biscuity shortbread note, oily, jelly baby, slightly meaty, venison?, black pepper, charred steak, some sulphurous smoke, almost volcanic? Juicy fig, pomegranate and grapefruit bring a freshness into the mix, cola bottle sweets.

Water: Notes meld together and balance well. Less overt smoke and earthy/dirty notes, more discrete oak with freshly sawn oak and sandalwood. More of the farmy notes with stables, manure and hay. Orange chewing gum.

Taste: Clean arrival with lots of cherry, black cherry, cola bottle sweets, very intense development, mineral stoniness, dark raisin and fig, oily Sherry, earthy smoke, dirty, soiled hay?, sulphurous smoke, smoky malt, lots of black pepper building, the unami notes are back with a charred steak note into the finish.

Water: Softer, builds beautifully. Sweetness starts with the Sherry, spicy oak, white pepper, overt peat, smoky malt, sulphurous smoke, orange citrus and a big black liquorice note. Black pepper leads into the finish.

Finish: Long length. Very oily, ashy, earthy, some Sherry sweetness. Better with water, with a savoury smoke and lovely sweetness. Liquorice again.

Masterful. A huge dirty whisky with character for days.

light amber color, sulfur nose, very young sherry, soft caramel, fruit cake, raisins, tobacco, light peat farm behind. Better in the mouth with a good magnitude, a little less sulfur, a little less young, caramel, dried fruits, tobacco, smoked bacon, quite dry. Finale long enough, suffers, peat, caramel, salt. Nice things in the mouth but really too sulfur for my taste.

This gets very high ratings, but I have to disagree. It is far from a bad whisky, but this much sulphur is just a bit too much for me.
    • Nose
My god, this is one dirty whisky. The typical sauerkraut-esque peat I get in the young ex-bourbon Ledaigs is still here, but much more subdued, mainly because it is very sulphury and meaty. Toffee and oranges. I'm not sure whether to like this or not. It is a very 'in your face' type of style.
    • Taste
Lots of peat. Slightly sulphuric. Salted caramel and very dry. A touch of leather and tobacco. Not for the fainthearted.
    • Finish
Rubber, peat and sherry. Drying and long.

What a dram! Sure glad I'm rating this one after almost finishing my 2nd bottle instead of judiging this beauty on a single and poorly 3 cl sample...

This is a big whisky; bold, dirty and at the end prett polished. You don't like sherry and the rough Ledaig style? Better move on! But if sherried and a dirty, cowstable style is what you like this is your whisky. It's like the great 2004 SV's but with a tad more finesses at the taste and finish. Great stuff!

A slap ! This Ledaig is greedy, round, balanced, fine and complex, while being fiery, tempestuous, and having a good pair in the panties. The peat / Sherry wedding works perfectly.
    • Nose
Balanced and charming. Smoked peat and farmhouse is coated caramelized greediness. White chocolate and hazelnut, but also a citrus freshness on the pressed orange two minutes earlier.
    • Taste
A clever blend of caramel, tobacco, grass smoke and straw. Many dried fruits (black grapes in the lead), and a slight acidity of green apple and fresh citrus. Sweet spices in shambles.
    • Finish
Very long. The hot, ashy smoke swells in the mouth. Exotic spices sparkle on the tongue.
