Whisky Reviews for William Cadenhead 40-year-old CA

11 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 88.88 points

  1. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

A well-matured ex-bourbon cask whisky, a lot of oak, without killing, a dreamy nose and a spicy aroma.
    • Nose
ripe, perhaps even overripe fruits, lightly flavored apples, some honey, vanilla, and beautiful old oak flavors that do not kill the whisky. Fruit salad with cinnamon and a little nutmeg. The nose is noticeably old.
    • Taste
surprisingly strong for the few percent. Here the oak takes over the dominance. Some sandalwood, slightly tart spices, without becoming too bitter and only a hint of fruit. It still slightly youthful tingling.
    • Finish
Tingling, tart, like tonic water, a little bit of menthol, a lot of oak, a touch of fruit, some leather. Towards the end, getting dry. Not too long.

Wow, what a nose! The nose is complex and beguiles my nose with overripe and tropical fruits. In the taste and finish dominate leather, tobacco, and smoke flavors, spicy and tart wood gives an idea of the old age. A great and multi-layered piglet, I like it very much!
    • Nose
A subtle fruity sweetness rises from the glass. Tropical fruits like pineapple become more intense and mix with bananas, apricots and honey. A touch of vanilla is added, slowly over ripe fruits are noticeable. While the old drop sticks to the glass wall after panning creamy and oily, the nose exudes an intense and bewitching fruit aroma. A touch of leather and subtle tobacco flavors penetrate through the fruit, fine wood tones are noticeable. I can not satirize the fruity nose and would finally like to try the piglet!
    • Taste
Spicy wood notes dominate the first sip, slightly watery, the old drop spreads over the tongue. Subtle leather and tobacco flavors flow from the slightly tart wood, a very fine smoky note is added. Fine grapefruit peels and tart fruits mingle with some honey and vanilla. Of the extreme fruitiness of the nose is unfortunately hardly noticeable.
    • Finish
With grapefruit flavors and subtle tart but spicy wood, the finish begins. Again, slight leather, tobacco and smoke flavors are noticeable. Slight pungency comes from the citrus fruits, a subtle walnut note becomes more intense and bitter. Slightly pale with a subtle woody note, the finish ends.

    • Nose
Juicy, fruity. Ripe kaki. Honey, marzipan and vanilla. A floral perfume, roses I guess. A cigar box, but nothing over-aged you might expect. Later a little smoke, and leather giving away its age. Eventually orange and clove.
    • Taste
Much more wood spice and more smoke. Smoke from fireworks even. Also creamy vanilla, pear, tobacco, marzipan and caramel. The meatiness of a steak, medium. Litchi and honey. The yellow fruit is more in the background now, but definitely still there.
    • Finish
Caramel, pear, tobacco, honey, vanilla and smoke. A drying oakiness in the end, perhaps that cigar box again.

Nice fruity nose at the beginning. In general, rather than Dalmore, I tend to be a fan of bourbon ripening of these distilleries, although they are primarily for sherry bottlings. This 40-year-old Cadenhead is expressive and complex, but unfortunately does not fit 100% in my prey scheme. Despite the 40.2% I feel it crisp, but also somewhat alcoholic. Nevertheless, well done and certainly not a bad one. Unfortunately, I had only a small sample.

  5. Dottore scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

    A wonderful malt. 90 points
    • Nose
Oily streaks adorn the glass. Beautiful ripe fruit flavors flow directly into the nose. Pineapple, banana, mango. A tropical fruit salad. Strong spicy oak and subtle vanilla, tobacco and leather notes suggest the age. Very harmonious, very complex and very intense.
    • Taste
Creamy mouthfeel at the beginning. Honey sweet and spicy wood testifies to the age, leathery burdens and dryness are spreading. Hardly any bitterness, but something missing is the great fruitiness, which was so promising in the nose.
    • Finish
Nice long finish. Dry and slightly nutty. The tongue remains spicy.

  6. moviemaniac scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Glenfarclas (ahem…) in refill ex-bourbon. And matured for a long time, 43 years to be exact, even though the label only says 40. Well, that’s quite a stunning dram, it matured gracefully. Not too oaky, exhibiting the tropical style (mango and papaya)of long ex-bourbon maturation, with added vanilla pipe tobacco and leather notes. Very good age and taste for money performance!

William Cadenhead Speyside 40 yo (40.2%, Cadenhead, 2016)
A single malt, said to come from that classy Speyside distillery near
where Bob Dylan has (or had?) a house. No, that’s not Malibu… Colour:
straw. Nose: oh, typical old cask that ‘went down’ quite a lot, but
without having gotten flabby or simply dead. One aroma I often find in
these old whiskies is bananas. Other than that, we have herbs (verbena,
wormwood) and assorted overripe apples. It’s pretty delicate and indeed
lightish, let’s hope it won’t sink on our palates. Mouth: it does not,
thanks to some rather marvellous fruits that do fight the obvious oak
(tea) and keep the whole afloat. Overripe apples again, bananas again
(and touches of mangos), some marzipan, and perhaps a spoonful of
chestnut purée, with this light tannicity. Finish: medium, with the oak
starting to dominate (green spices, banana skin). But it never gets
drying. Comments: the equivalent of some old chardonnay that’s still got
all its teeth. Meursault, there. SGP:451 - 88 points.
