Quite interesting - members at WB score the OB 21 years Ardbeg very high (I find it rather weakish, but I do not matter...) and this classic 18 years old Ardbeg pretty low (is this because they do not know this is an Ardbeg or is my taste that contrary to the majority of WB members?).  But to be honest, I do not care...

This nose is a trademark Ardbeg from the early nineties.  I will identify this out of a thousand different whiskies not because it is that great but because it is that unique.  The arrival on the palate is bold and mouth-coating and without any hot moments.  On the tongue it is very sweet and peaty, simply delicious to sip.  The finish is long (even longer) and one to chew for minutes...

In my opinion the best price-quality-ratio of an early-nineties Ardbeg.  Sometimes you find it quite cheap at online auctions.  But do not tell anybody this is an Ardbeg...

Very nice 18er Islay whisky. Despite the age still good peat available, to some salt, sweetness and (citrusy) fruits. In addition, very round / balanced and easy to drink, delicious!

Good but not great is the most apt description for me. Even though it is
bottled at a respectable 46 percent, this feels like it was watered
    down a bit too much.
    • Nose
Subtle brine and peat smoke with a hint of rubber. Also apple juice, grapes and a touch of varnish. Very delicate.
    • Taste
The peat smoke is very soft. There's some ash and tar, as well as smoked salmon, ginger and brine. It has a faint fruity side with bananas and peaches. Lacks some punch.
    • Finish
Soft smokiness with faint fruits. Medium in length.

    • Nose
      Smoke; Iodine; Herbs
    • Taste
juicy smoke (like bacon); very cute; then a strong spice note (carnation?); gets a bit oily and is nice and round; surprisingly sweet and no oak at all (I was wondering, since 18 years old)
    • Finish
Dry smoke (campfire), which stays very long; turns short sweet and then slightly bitter. Interesting, as the oak gets a bit bitterness, but this typical oak kick stays completely gone

The whisky offers significantly more than the NAS. A nice old Islay whisky, without question.
    • Nose
the peat is present but not dominant, fruity notes, citrus, peat smoke, vanilla, oak, slightly mineral, some marzipan. You measure the age. Beautiful peat nose with more behind it.
    • Taste
Soft, vanilla & fruit, but dipped in ash and peat, a pleasant oak tartness comes along.
    • Finish
      Oak, mint, peat smoke.

Nose: Salted lime peel! Fruity beeswax candles. Dry vanillapods. Even a hint of tropical fruits like mango or papaya. The peat is delicate but gives a salty and tangy edge to the whole experience. Smoky limoncello. With time, old leatherjacket and dried tobaccoleaves accompany the fruits.

Taste: A meaty, herbal and mentholated start. Oily and mature mouthfeel. The peat has cigarlike qualitys and you get the feeling of aged smoky mezcal with drops of lemonjuice. A simple, focused and rather delicious dram. Reminds me of the Caol Ila 25YO.

Comments: At the time when this one was readily available, it was a real bargain. All bourbon matured, no gimmicky Ardbeg at a nice age. What more can you ask for? /88

I expected more of this one. By no means a good or a bad islay. Is it the fantastic look or maybe 18 years old and islay? It's not fierce nor very layered.

I think also a Ardbeg.Alles in it, dirty, greasy sweet.
