Caramella Mokatine

Belgian importer The Nectar celebrates its 10th anniversary with the release of quite a few bottles (with a lovely label, I might add). This single cask of Ben Nevis is one of those.

Won-der-ful nose on Caramella Mokatine, marmalade of Seville oranges, toffee, maraschino cherries, roasted malt, nougat and baked banana. Aniseed and cinnamon report for duty. I could sniff this for hours, so beautiful and complex (and dark) is the nose of this Ben Nevis. Wow!

It is equally lovely on the palate. All kinds of dark fruits, caramel, spices, nuts, honey. It has a little zesty edge. Nice strength, too. All aromas of the lovely nose reappear on the palate, upholstered with loads of woodsmoke; Succulent is the word you are looking for.

The medium long finish has a light drying effect.

Party time! This Ben Nevis could easily lie ten years, that is how complex it is. Excellent choice.

A great nose, fat and buttery with toffee and fudge, vanilla, maple syrup, wood polish, slightly floral, nutty, fruity, hard strawberry and raspberry flavoured candy, cola bottles, mild cocoa butter, some citrus, dried apricot and preserved cherries sightly sourish with some cinnamon.

Taste

Thick and creamy, very buttery, vanilla, butterscotch and fudge, syrupy sweet, bitter citrus, apricots, canned peaches, custard, some bitter notes of polished old wood, clove, mild white pepper and ginger.

Finish

Long: still a very thick candied fruitiness of cherries apricot and peaches with well integrated drying old wood notes with clove, nutmeg, ginger and pepper. Actually it's quite dry and bitter eventually (which I shouldn't really like), but also still very much retaining the syrupy sweetness somehow.

Intense, tasty, with a long finish and excellent balance. Pleased at all stages: from the nose to the aftertaste.

Tasted this one head-to-head with MoS 12054. Less sherried, but it does appear older. 88/89.

Nose

Peach, cream, Wehter's caramel, fried banana, mocha, red apple and tobacco. Initially not a lot of red fruit, but with water cranberry comes up.

Taste

Caramel, peach, mocha, cranberry, cherry, vanilla pudding, leather, tobacco, apple and spice.

Finish

Toffee, peach, cocoa, cranberry and a little marshmallow.

No peat at all indeed!

Very rooty and heady on the nose. Not unlike a Glendronach Octarine. And quite some tofee on the palate.
