Typical Port Ellen, which is great! This need time to breath~
    • Nose
      92 92
That typical and amazing PE nose. Smoke, sweet honey ashes, vanilla, seaweed, with hints of medicinal notes. Coal, sweet sea breeze. Very balance nose, with all the flavors harmonize with each other~ after a sip more coal, sweet barley, sweet paraffin, freshly pull grass, peanut. The vanilla honey dust of PE is always lovely.
    • Taste
      91 91
Sweet, oily, fruity, salty, with alot of coal ashes. Lots of fresh mints as well. The main point is all flavor is balance, unlike many modern peat whiskies that too emphasis just on the peat~
    • Finish
      90 90
      Long, salty liquorice, mints freshness.

    • Nose
      92 92
Lovely coastal goodness, sea breeze, sea water, sea salt, mineral and chalk, wet rocks. The smoke is much stronger compared to the 1983 TWA Butterflies, but not overwhelming, more like soot, rather that peat smoke.
    • Taste
      92 92
Loads of tropical fruits, also oranges and lemons, slightly salty. Some waxiness, tongue coating. 92
    • Finish
      90 90
Not strong but very lasting finish, as if you just ate a basket of fruits, but there is a plate of heavily smoked ham on the table. Lovely.

On the nose, fine peat, a little smoke, but rather discreet at first.
A maritime side, can be even a little mineral, as when taking a deep breath at the edge of a cliff by the sea.
    May be a lemony note.

In the mouth a little tingling on the tongue, with the maritime side (a hint of salt?)
Development on a little lemon, then a note of smoke.

Long finish always on the maritime side with a light peat.

    Beautiful whisky.

Light peat, herbal teas, delicay... This grand and typical easy-going Port Ellen. I just love it!
    • Nose
So delicately PortElleny, with this typical combo of light peat, herbal teas (mostly verbena), citrus, and a wee sea breeze.
    • Taste
More peat now, but very elegant still. Peated lightly sugary lemon verbena tea, if that exists. Perfect ABV, and great balance.
    • Finish
Tasty, with a light ashy-citrusy aftertaste that lasts forever.

A gentle, refined and complex nose. The kind you lose yourself in for one hour before realising you didn't even sip the nectar yet.

The mouth was maybe just a tad behind but I'm nitpicking. It had lemon, pepper and even pine. What can be wrong with that ?

Overall this one was less immediate and more cerebral than the 1983 Norse Cask 24 yo. Anyway. It's a tie.

    Tasting note from july 2017.
    • Nose
Light peat smoke, coastal and mineral notes with seabreeze, wet stone, pencil shavings. Lemon and a tiny bit of ashes. With time the lemon is mixed with fresh mint and other herbal notes.
    • Taste
Sweet and lemony with strong peat, smoke, pepper and grassy notes. Pine resin, a bit of grass and eucalyptus.
    • Finish
      Looooooong, peaty and salty.

    Port Ellen 28y 1979 (53,7%, Norse Cask Selection 2007, Cask QW1311, 277 btl.)

Nose: very typical, wonderful Port Ellen smell. Needs of bit of hand warmth to open up but after that, it just keeps going. Wet stones, salt, lemon skin, ash, lots of smoke, seaweed, vanilla, mint… Wonderfully complex and clean at the same time. Some green leaves and grassy notes, with a medicinal touch. I’ve spent 45 minutes just nosing this, really excellent. Mouth: sweet and fruity attack but heavily peated at the same time. Pine wood, pepper. Chocolate. The aftertaste shows salty liquorice notes and lime, leaving behind some coal smoke and pepper as well.

Overall great balance between sweet, grassy, salty and peaty flavours. Terrific. A shame that I only had a small sample, every drop was more evidence for its genius!

    Score: 93/100.

    Good quality Port Ellen.
    • Nose
Amazingly fruity for Port Ellen, kiwi, nectarines and peaches. Plenty of maltiness too. Lemon barley sugar and draff. Lint smoked salmon and fishing nets. Very subtle.
    • Taste
Huge barley sugar and peat embers, sweet, vanilla and delicious.
    • Finish
Fairly zings around the palate. Lots of life, spice and glowing embers.

One of the best I've ever tasted. It's in particular the taste that is so full on, it's just fantastic.
