    N: Higher abv now with lots of sherry, or madeira [cake] perhaps? Aah ok, it's rum and it's talking rather firmly of tropical dry fruits [melon, pineapple] with gentle spices. Rich and thicker than the Doublewood.
    T: Some immediate spiciness on the palate with a rather frenetic form. Adding water promotes the cereal malty putty notes.
    F: All sorts.
    C: Whilst retaining Balvenie's signature and quality, I still prefer the Doublewood.

    Good beginners whisky. But it feels as immature whisky from exhausted casks, finished in some active rum casks.

      Clear rum influence. Sugary, little oily nose. smells a bit of burned caramel. A little bourbon oak influence is in the background.
      Overall it smells a bit doctored, like it is forced to take a rum cask nose.
    • Taste

      Sweet, but still somehow young. Inactive casks and forcefully matured? Very sweet palate. The rum influence is remarkable though.
    • Finish

      Short-medium length. Again very sweet. And it fades away a tad bitter.

    This is the third Balvenie in a row, after the Balvenie 12 year old single bourbon cask and the 12 year old double wood.
    The rum finish has changed the whisky in an interesting way. However, I am not sure if it's an improvement (I'm a huge bourbon barrel whisky fan at the moment)

      Once again, quite a fresh bourbon driven nose, the vanilla and banana notes are complimented by a brown sugar almost caramely note. Some warm spicy rum raisin smells are added to the bourbon barrel base. The rum finish is nicely integrated on the nose
    • Taste
      85 85
      The rum barrel has impacted the taste more than the nose. The whisky in itself has become spicier and sweeter at the same time. The bourbon base notes like vanilla are hidden behind brown sugar and spices and only become noticeable after some time on the tongue. After that the taste changes and the wood notes of the barrel come to the front
    • Finish
      83 83
      The finish is sweet, peppery and slightly bitter, not too long and not that short

    ... I'm having a hard time with the rum barrels ...?
    • Nose
      79 79
      sweet grapes, caramel, vanilla, distinct rum aromas;
    • Taste
      74 74
      strong onset, a beautiful rum note, sweetness, vanilla, oak, spice; slightly alcoholic and slightly out of round;
    • Finish
      77 77
      medium length finish, slightly bitter; in the end, caramel and sweetness;

    Balvenie 14 year old Caribbean Cask is a popular whisky in many countries and it’s easy to see why – it’s well made, tasty and with a good interplay between sweetness and spicing. It’s perhaps not quite as rum-driven as you might envisage (or might have experienced with other rum cask matured whiskies), but is nevertheless a tasty, commonly available expression.

    • Nose
      Opening sweetly with aromas of toffee, brown sugar, honey and vanilla, this also presents some tropical fruitiness – pineapples and guavas – alongside raisins (which might be rum-soaked) and gentle spicing from ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. The addition of water adds some orchard fruits in the form of apples and pears as well as some creamy bakery puff pastries.
    • Taste
      A sweet arrival with a solid mouthfeel. Toffee apples, honey, vanilla and oakiness are tempered by fruitiness – starting with fresh berries, but moving quickly down a more tropical path with overripe bananas, mangos, pineapples and guavas. There’s certainly some rum-like flavour here, though more white (party) rum than deep rich and dark molasses heavy rum. Spicing can be felt in the middle and back palate and is fairly pronounced – black pepper – but with some chilli pepper, light salinity and cinnamon. Water brings out some maltiness and allows a touch of natural earthiness to shine through.
    • Finish
      Medium in length with some slight oak astringency and a mix of sugars, malts and pepper spicing.
