Whisky Reviews for Tullamore Dew 1949 CA

  1. MaltMartin scored this whisky 96 points Connoisseur

This ultra rare whiskey from the long gone Daly's Tullamore Distillery was taken from a 41yo cask which was discovered at William Cadenhead which (according to Jim Murray in its book 'Classical Irish Whiskey') issued 214 miniatures out of it in 1991. Tasted with Aby in cross comparison with the Tullamore 42yo 1948, 64,5% at Irish Extravaganza. This one is better than its 1948 sister. Expensive but worth every penny for the experience.
    • Nose
Stewed fruits of figs and dates. Christmas cake. Lots of beeswax, sweet honey clover and butterscotch. Vanilla and custard. Orange marmelade, Later on hints of cigar boxes and tobacco as well. Extremely aromatic and jammy. Old Demerara rum style.
    • Taste
Yes yes yes! Juicy chewy oaky notes intermingled with a robust oiliness. Raspberry jelly. Prunes and gooseberries. Blackcurrants. Chilli-peppers, camphor and menthol. Bergamot, kumquat and raisins at the background. Unbelievable rich and round flavour for such an old whiskey.
    • Finish
Long and dry. Bitter-sweetness of grapefruits. Cinnamon. A little Ginger. Some pine at the end. Well balanced. Outstandingly beautiful.

Smell Nose: The combination of Irish sps and the Scottish Highlands, warm honey, bananas, caramel, jam-rich berries and kumquat, I heard that some talented and strange singers can practice to the point of approaching instrumentalization , And this wine has a round and full fat and waxy smell in the smell part, so I have no resistance to this.

Taste Palate: A large chunk of thick wine is stuffy, the barrel taste is obvious but not abrupt after years of grinding, the two combine to form the same impact force and suffocation as the airbag, the flavor density is extremely large, ginkgo, raw almond, raw Coffee beans, dried okra, dried tangerine peel, wax oil, fruit shells and original Jinlang gum are not difficult to swallow without water. After adding water, the hard bread is soft and roasted, releasing some sweetness of honey and maltose, and the taste of coffee has a tendency to increase the coking.

After rhyme Finish: medium-length, orange peel, orange-flavored sugar cubes, coffee beans, wax oil, and extremely strong mint and herbal flavors.

Body: It is heavy on the body, with a weak sense of oil and fat, strong and stuffy wine, not irritating but with a spicy throat. The overall flavor wheel is dry, deflated, sour and astringent, which is extremely difficult to please.

Nose: Wax, old book, coffee, caramel, cranberries, blackberry, tangerine sauce, banana bread, pumpkin nickel, oak oil. Orange really comes out with water added.

Palate: Fresh coffee beans, cocoa mole, truffle, orange, papaya, black current, rose water, leather, old book, wax.

Body: Medium, the high alcohol content covers oils and stickiness in the texture. You can feel the mouth coated by alc. at the beginning but it burns you throat afterwards. There's no excessive oakiness, which is worth many compliments. But again, 65.3% is enough to seal the orange-fruitiness in the palate.

Finish: Long and intense, orange, dried tangerine, mineral and leathery notes as well.

Summary: Any Irish maniac would have peaking expectation for this, to be honest it meets such expectation in a reluctant way. I think it is more or less similar to other Sherried overproof casks in the same 150th anni. series, which makes it a great Sherried whiskey, but not legendary Irish.
