Glendronach 18 Year 53.6% Tawny Port Pipe 1995

N: Apple, ethanol, cinnamon sticks, orange zest, dark chocolate, dried strawberries, twiggy and floral.

P: Sticky sweet, syrupy, strawberry and rhubarb, white pepper, chili peppers

F: Syrupy sweetness, cocoa, fig jam, plums, black pepper, tannin

Notes: A little bit disjointed. It drinks younger than 18 years in my opinion. It didn’t improve, and actually kind of fell apart with water as well. Quite hot, I would have guessed it to be almost 60%

Edit: improved greatly with water actually. Exactly the opposite of the other sulfured glendronach I had beside it. So I bumped it up a point and we’ll call it a tie.

To any albertans who care: the co-op glendronach cask 1051 20 year 1994 Oloroso is the best one I’ve had - still in stock as of March 2019..

This is really tasty. It’s a completely different experience from a ruby port matured whisky: it’s so much less sweet and fruity, and heavier on the spice notes. I love that rich, almost savoury barley flavour, and the oak is heavy but not overwhelming. Worth seeking out for a single-cask GlenDronach experience different from the usual.

Nose: It’s fruity, but not nearly as sweet as I’d expect from a ruby port matured whisky. Blood orange, grapefruit, apricots, raisins, dried cherries and cranberries, raspberry jam, and sticky aged balsamic. Plenty of cinnamon, star anise, and a bit of cumin. Toasted walnuts and almonds. Slightly musty malted barley, oatcakes, and honey.

Palate: Thick texture. Rich fruit up front, but not too sweet. More of a blood orange and grapefruit pith or zest here. Some burnt sugar and honey, with more of those oatcakes. Just a little bit of something like hibiscus in the middle. Strong oak on the development, with worn leather, old pencils, walnuts, and dusty earth. Vanilla bean, star anise, and dark chocolate on the back end.

Finish: Rich and heavy. Sweet candied blood orange and grapefruit, coated in dark chocolate. Oatcakes, silky caramel, and honey. More stonefruit, maybe with some papaya.
