The German Limburg Dramclub has quite a few bottlings on their résume, but this is the first time they bottle a Tomatin. If I remember one thing about Tomatin, it’s that it never disappoints, either young or old. Although old Tomatin can be absolutely top. This ons is very young though, only 8 years. Did you notice the ABV? So did I. Oh, my!
Wonderfully dark and sweet nose on rum raisins, gingerbread with almond paste, slightly burnt caramel, mocha and loads of vermiculate wood. Hint of wet earth and autumn leaves. Something fresh, though: mint.
Could it bet hat the ABV is a typo on the label? This is quite quaffable. Okay, it prickles and gives a lot of warmth upon arrival – my saliva glands go into overdrive – but I do not feel this needs water. The fruit starts off sweet, but evolves quickly towards bittersweet like grapefruit and dark grapes. A hint of chocolate and then an uppercut of woodspices with a big chili pepper note.
The finish is very long and warm, back towards sweetness, to leave the mouth completely dry.
Well, this may be a young Tomatin lacking some complexity, it is nevertheless a bombastic whisky that will not leave you unaffected. Goes very well with pastry, but also with soft cheese.
- Nose: Alcohol very present. Woody, pungent, dusty. Raisin and burnt caramel. A long aeration is good for him; it becomes more delicate. Palate: Big fruity bitterness. Wood, caramel, black grapes. Final: The heat of alcohol is still growing. Woody drought. Verdict: A frank attack, direct. Little complexity, monolithic, and very woody.
