Nice Springbank, just a pity that it's so expensive. And even then it sold out unvelievably quick. Compared to cask 551, this one is clearly more fruity. Can't pick a favourite, they both have their own charm even though they're remarkably different.
    • Nose
      90 90
Apricot, honey, leather, mango, orange, peat and pepper. It has something to it right away - even when I poured it into the glass - which I associate with OBE, even though I've only just opened the bottle. That's actually a good sign. Later the orange note gets a twist, like lemonade or those effervescent vitamin tablets. And then after 15 minutes a very sudden but very present smell of Haagse Hopjes (coffee candy) out of nowhere. Eventually something farmy like hay sweltering in the sun. With water also vanilla while keeping the touch of leather, a bit like Springbanks from the 70s used to have.
    • Taste
      90 90
Apricot, peat, leather, orange, honey, limestone and pepper. With water that same OBE association that I had with the nose turns up. Not like any other 90s Springbank I've ever had.
    • Finish
      89 89
Peat, almond, leather, apricot, Orangina and pineapple.

VAnilla, lemon, chalk, citrus, wax, white fruits, orchard fruits, stone fruits, similar in profile to #550 but I find this one much better

  4. lincolnimp scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

This is similar to cask 550 Archives but there is a little more fruit, peat is nicely weighted, worth 90 points also.

Lightly smokey, the oak comes through very well, such a complex masterpiece. Everything I like about springbank but turned to 11.

  9. HammerHead scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

On a basic level similar to cask 550, but it's got way more fruity notes and as a result clearly more depth to the experience.
    • Nose
      91 91
Wow, both mineral, chalky and a bit nutty (like cask 550), but also way more fruity, lemon, green apple, pear, peach, pineapple, some vanilla, agave syrup, a whiff of the "worn out carbon brush"-smokiness (less profound than cask 550).
    • Taste
      90 90
Clear minerality, oily, a fresh and dried fruitiness, lemon, tangerines, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, some honey and also quite some (white) peppery notes and a mild oak wood spiciness.
    • Finish
      91 91
Medium to long: very mineral (like sparking naturally sourced spring water), chalky, beautiful fading fruit leftovers from the taste, subtle peppery oak wood.

    Tasted in parallel with # 55, # 56, # 164 and #Sb 1993.
This is the winner for me, probably for his more fruity and balanced profile.
    • Nose
      Very balanced nose.
We have a lot of fruits, citrus (lemon, orange, clementine), but also a very beautiful mineral.
    • Taste
On the palate it is light and delicate on fruit syrup, mainly citrus fruits.
A touch of rosemary raises the whole.
    • Finish
Long finish on a beautiful fruit salad.
      Really without a hitch.

The nose was just a little promising but on the palate it unleashed its full potential - great stuff!
    • Nose
Honey, lemony, chalky, limestone, some green fruits, a bit leafy, waxy - one of the many typical Springbank expressions - not bad once you get familiar with this
    • Taste
Very oily, creamy, subtle sweetness, lemony again, and limestone

With water: tons of grapefruits, more zesty and peppery
    • Finish
      Long and burning, more peppery

But waaaa what! It's VERY big Springbank. The quintessence of rusticity that I like so much at this distillery.
    • Nose
Very, very, very austere. A fruity white mini first, then a screed of austerity that falls on this nose. Limestone, mineral, petrified. Then comes back some dried citrus fruit.
    • Taste
Tangy fruit, lemon liqueur, spicy spices. Mineral smoke grows in the back. The power becomes more and more important when you keep a lichette in the mouth.
    • Finish
Boom! Desert austerity is coming back. Petrified wood, polished stone, and endless waves of swirling dry smoke.

  16. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

    Blind tasting.
    • Nose
Floral, briny, a small trace of smoke and sweet fruits. Vanilla, pine apple and later more citrus fruits.
    • Taste
Briny, white pepper, yellow fruits, briny and some liquorice. With water more floral tones and a bit dusty.
    • Finish
Pastry - puff pastry, still the briny notes and fruity - guava and cactus.

This one is a special case for if you are in the mood. It's rather closed and astringent. Nevertheless, it's good.
    • Nose
Very raw, earthy and leafy. Putty, rubber, bandages, dry peat, sheep wool, leaves, walnut oil and grapefruit skin. It also has a certain salty and mineral edge, like being on a beach and smelling the air and rocks that are wet from the see water and kelp.
    • Taste
Quite hot without water. With water: It has this bone dry oloroso touch, which is salivatingly sour and bitter. Walnut (the nut and the skin) is shining through massively, next to sultanas and dates. Furthermore, there is orange, again this earthy and leafy touch, peat and still this putty/rubber edge.
    • Finish
Quite long, more or less a prolongation of the taste. Quite sour and bitter, with tons of walnuts, leafs, ginger, orange and a whiff of peat.

    Quote Whiskynotes.be - April 4, 2016:

Springbank 19 yo 1996 (54,9%, Archives ‘Shells from the Bay of Caracas’ 2016, refill bourbon hogshead #551, 239 btl.)Nose: this one seems a little more narrow, with the same kind of typical Springbank minerality but discreet fruits. Soft grainy notes, quite a lot of library dust, and light whiffs of aspirin. Earthy notes and leather. Aromatic and punchy, just not as focused as the other one. Mouth: punchy, with a bittersweet attack. Seville oranges, a little tonic water, grapefruit juice and pepper. Different oils. Rather great if you like this style. Grows slightly wider, towards marmalade and with firm sooty, ashy notes underneath (more than in #550). Some nice apricot jam in the end. Touches of salt as well. Finish: long, bitter and salty. Slightly rough.Again this is about sweetness, saltiness and bitter notes, all trying to get the upper hand. Just when I thought this was the rougher sister, I picked up some roundness. Close together in any case. Around € 160.Score: 88/100

Are there people rating this release just by the label? Speciale the 95 points rating that seems to be done by somebody who can't be found as a WB member.... Or is it just me seeing people rating bottles that they don't have in their collection? Imho you should rate a whisky after some time and not just 1 dram. Or no dram at all.
