A very wayward Springbank. Remarkably different from cask 551. Not as fruity, but that doesn't mean that I like it less. This one really has its own distinct oily character that makes it very interesting. I have to agree with Serge that this one is probably to be enjoyed most by the real Springbank fans as it's less accessible than its sister cask.
    • Nose
      91 91
Coconut oil, vanilla, brazil nut, orange, oak, limestone and peach. A clean horse stable with some straw, hay and polished leather. Later salmon sashimi drained in salty soy sauce. With water more fruit, like apricot and mango.
    • Taste
      90 90
Oily, peppery and somewhat peaty. Straw, limestone, sushi, orange, peach and a little leather. With water it becomes fresher, but it doesn't lose its quirkiness.
    • Finish
      90 90
Peat ash, mango, straw, sushi, clay and pineapple.

I put a few drops of water in this for the start, there is some nice peat in the mix here which is really nice, the white fruit is in the background.
If it was a little sweeter it would be over 90 points. as it stands 90 points is well deserved for a peaty Springer, good cask

once every so often, a spirit comes and gives me a new smell.. Serge tries to break it up into components of aspirin and gunpowder and creme de menthe.. and it is rather getting close! but in itself, i think this dominant quinninic-bitter, very herbal. dry and dirty note is simply a new smell.. taste is very powerful and almost leaves a trail of chalk on the back of my throat.. never tasted naphthalene (and neither should anyone), but i imagine that it would probably taste similar to this .. this is so way up there in the whisky Olympus, that you know it’s quality even if you don’t know so much about whisky to articulate why exactly it is so.. nose it and taste it, and you can say for certain that this is high quality whisky art.

Intrigueing whisky, I wish the sample I had was a little larger...
    • Nose
      Mineral tones, wet pebbles.
    • Taste
Mineral moves to the background. Something between orange peel and citrus. Very clean.
    • Finish
      Changes to slightly bitter.

Smell: Super-impact minerals, ordinary glue, oily (hala) smell, and dried protein. Before this period, people may not like it, but it is ready to change. Wet dead leaves, forest after rain, lemon juice, smoked wood (probably because Gene next to him suddenly started smoking) immature green fruits.

Drink: The wine is thin and weak, but still has some melting feeling, sweet vanilla cream, slightly smoky, and some light fruit at the end.

Feelings: This bottle of wine made me think about a question: After Genting chose to use the floor to send out malting in 1992, is it because of debugging during this period that the difference between each batch of malting is quite large? The styles of #550 and #55 are very different. Although I prefer the style of #55, #550 will not score much lower than #55.

    • Nose
      90 90
Very mineral, limestone, chalk, nutty, waxy, lemon, unripe apples and pears, honey, some grassy notes and a very a-typical smokiness: smells like worn out carbon brushes in old electric power tools.
    • Taste
      87 87
A mineral saltiness, short circuited electronics, an oily nuttiness, white fruits like unripe apple and galia melon, bitter oranges, some white grapes, mild honey, quite some pepper and wood bitters.
    • Finish
      88 88
Again pretty mineral and chalky, some fresh and honied fruitiness, also a bit musty with a clear but not disturbing wood bitterness.

After the recent releases of Springbank from Archives I had to try the older ones. I heard stories about these Springbanks releases. It is a very clean Springbank, the distillery character is clearly loud here.
    • Nose
      91 91
Mineral, pebble stones. Some lemon zest, unripe pears, vanilla. After a while more fruity, almost towards stewed fruits, some drips of honey.
    • Taste
      90 90
Quite the opposite from the nose, much more fruit then I expected. Apricots, peaches, sweet honey, thick mouthfeel. Ripe pears now, apples as and a touch of salt.
    • Finish
      91 91
Syrup, thick, oily. Quite long, very sweet. I like it!

Tasted it with my friend Cubey at the first Whiskybase Gathering in Rotterdam (26 November 2016).
Perhaps all the other drams were much more characterfull that I could not fully appreciate this mineral clean springbank.

Superb from beginning to end. No flaw. Recalls the 90 kingsburry in a less mineral hair.
    • Nose
Very mineral nose. Pebble. Slightly lemony but discreet. Light vanilla. A little white flower.
    • Taste
On the palate it's fruity. White grape, apricot, peach. Sweet, perfectly integrated alcohol. Always mineral but in the background.
    • Finish
Final very long and fruity. Mineral too. Superb. Peach syrup. Liquorice veil after the event

The nose doesn't match the palate but both are not bad at all
    • Nose
Lemony, chalky, honeydew, green fruits and vegetables, but also something meaty and porky
    • Taste
Very citrusy and lemony, rather fresh, oily, almonds
    • Finish
Medium long, a tad bitter in the end

Shares many qualities with the other Archives ex-bourbon cask springbank released at the same time, but I like this one slightly more *probably*. Mineral, citrusy, oily, funky, and slightly fruity, this one is a winner. With water, lots and lots of lemon. I am a big fan of this modern ex-bourbon springbank profile. One of the more pungent and bright example of this.

  18. Cubey666 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Tasted it at the first Whiskybase Gathering in Rotterdam (26 November 2016).

Some keywords I wrote down: Alcoholic, fresh 'n fruity, hint of salinity, oily and warm, with some vanilla.

On the taste more alcohol, fruitiness, tropical island fruit cocktail, with lemons but a bit sharp

The finish is a bit metallic and astringent, what happened?

Not a bad Springbank, but perhaps the previous springbank (Springbank 1999 Arc WB#87813) dulled somewhat my senses... and perhaps i should have drank them in the opposite order?

  19. Bishlouk scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Less austere than the 551 barrel, more fruity as a whole. But hardiness is also at the rendezvous, it is very good this case too.
    • Nose
Very close to the nose of the 551 barrel, as austere and mineral, but also fresher. A sprig of lemon marmalade and fresh fern.
    • Taste
Lemon and apple in compote and jam; it oscillates between the sweet gourmand and the acidulous astringent. Oily limestone and powdered lime try to fight against the fruit, but have difficulty in imposing themselves.
    • Finish
Dry limestone remains for a moment, accompanied by shriveled lemon peel. Petrified, without drying.

The refill bourbon barrels show correctly the peppery distillery character, but some new flavor comes?! A remarkable whisky, which needs a lot of time.
    • Nose
      89 89
Unripe banana, grass, coconut, orange, cleaned stables, straw, menthol, raw salmon
    • Taste
      90 90
Oily, powerful: citruses, grass, cloves, pepper, straw, pineapple and mango
    • Finish
      89 89
Long, fruity, sweet with some ash

This is a whisky that makes you think about what you really taste, over and over again. Very but nice but not my first choice for a relaxed evening.
    • Nose
Seems very closed. Mix of hay and freshly mown grass. Green banana, aceton, hint of vanilla. very hard to smell through the alcohol, it seems.
    • Taste
This one kicks you right into your face. Very difficult to define what tastes are in here. Mix of citrus and vanilla. A hint of grass with clove on the background.
    • Finish
Medium long. The aftertaste is slightly acidic with the sweetness of vanilla.

    Quote Whiskynotes.be - April 4, 2016:

Springbank 19 yo 1996 (56,4%, Archives ‘Shells from the Bay of Caracas’ 2016, refill bourbon hogshead #550, 284 btl.)Nose: a nice mineral / fruity combo. Lots of ferns, a little linseed oil, hay and wet limestone, mixed with juicy grapefruits and lemon drops. Subtle vanilla and nougat. A light grassy yeastiness as well, which works well. Mouth: very typical, raw palate. Lots of punch and lots of briny, zesty and salty notes. Apple peelings and orange liqueur. Some citrus green tea. Very mineral. Smoky notes and herbal liqueurs towards the end. Finish: very long, dry, chalky and herbal but with light lemony notes underneath. If you like Springbank minerality, you’ll love this one. It finds the right balance between the austere and the zesty / fruity side. Around € 160.Score: 90/100
