Whisky Reviews for Tomatin 1994 Cl

  1. HammerHead scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Quite a lowlandish appearance on the nose: green apple, butterscotch, honey, vanilla and some lime. A slight herbal hay-like note in the background. Water brings out baked apples and whipped cream.

Taste: clean, digestive biscuits, again the butterscotch, honey and vanilla, more creamy with water.

Finish: short to medium in length, clear vanilla, honey, and a complete absense of bitterness.

Beautiful lighter and delicate whisky, with a fairly complex nose considering the 'lightness' of the overall experience. Very well balanced and for me clearly underrated.

A very nice nose. Sweet, grassy, little sour and the sherry influences are subtle. Quite nice, this is a dram which needs your time and devotion.
It is a very pleasing nose!

Good classic whisky notes, like hay, caramel, canned fruit and a hint of sherry in the background. Very well done

Long length. Again some hay, sweetness and wood notes. Not most impressing, but still good.

Tomatin is a well appreciated distillery in my book. Aside from a very special bottling I hand filled at the distillery for my son, I have had quite some above average expressions. So naturally I’m curious for this one.
    • Nose
It’s no secret that I’m quite a big fan of refill cask bottlings and this proves why. This is a beautiful clean, subtle and buttery nose. Mixed dried herbs, butterscotch and vanilla sticks. Also a grassy note. I can see why Hammerhead stated it‘s nose is like a lowland whisky. The 48% gives it exactly the right intensity. Over time a layer of shoepolish and oak shavings appear.
    • Taste
Smooth and very well rounded. Again clean on the palate. Soft, savory and oily. Herbal tea, some white pepper, quite a lot of Apple and home made dough. Savory note disappears with some water being added, also white pepper gets less. It becomes a little more accessible but it stays subtle, smooth and well rounded.
    • Finish
The long finish gives me wet oak, it reminds me a little of an autumn forest. Again herbal tea is present as well as . Also it is a tad bitter, this is slightly disturbing at some point but a drop of water solves this ‘problem’

With the nose being superb, the taste being great and the finish being good, This is buy a bottle material for me.

A whisky with the right average, what
    • Nose
light, vanilla, peppery, green apples, pears. refill, kind re-re-refill cask? not complex. does not reflect his age. With a little airing, the profile is more pleasantly fruity / vanilla, softer and less spicy / woody
    • Taste
Nice, well done, but very classic. Delicate, fruity, floral and vanilla. The mouth is subtle and sweet. The length is average. The whole lack of depth. One would expect more complex, considering the age.
    • Finish
      Malty vanilla. a bit short

  10. St. Pauli scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Light and friendly aperitif  style dram. Not so complex, but pleasant whilst chatting with friends.
    • Nose
Quite crisp and mineral, almost like a Muscadet. It has notes of chalk, limestone, lemon juice and zest, grass, mint, and just a little bit of sweet impressions from barley and vanilla. Overall it's not overly complex, but with pleasant characteristics of the spirit.
    • Taste
Gets more herbal, sweeter and and, a bit perfumed and soapy. It's not unpleasant though... The fruitiness is more on apple juice, with still a hint of lemon squeezed into it. Then there is plenty or coriander, mint, pepper and maybe even some rose petals. The vanilla gets more to the front, just as honey and barley.
    • Finish
Gets quite peppery, but doesn't become dry at all. In the short finale, you mainly find barley, grass and a bit of vanilla.
