    Cadenhead's tasting notes:Nose
    Slightly perfumed with smoke and burnt driftwood; fruit cocktail syrup. Some leaf tea, spice and some white tangy fruits

    Palate
    Warming tingling sea air dry smoke like notes to the front and top of the palate. Grassy and creamy with soft smoke and slight Mescal notes with a hint of bergamot

    Finish
    Creamy smoke and soft peat tones seem to be flowing across the finish as some white soft poached fruits arrive, some Ashy, with strong toffee, smoked cheese and smoked venison

    A solid 25yo, but better ones aren't too hard to come across.

    Tasted with the following Cadenheads Caol Ilas: 15yo 2000 Auth. Coll. 53% (85 pts.), 31yo 1984 Small Batch 52,1% (90), 34yo 1982 Small Batch 60,1% (93), and 36yo 1980 Auth. Coll. 52,3% (91).
    • Nose
      Somewhat sweet oak, with a noticeable bourbon note on the first nosing. Herbal, some fruitiness, lemon cheesecake. With water: Tar, cottage cheese, fresh mimosa leaves, and wax. Then varnish or faint poster glue. None of that fishy smokiness you can find in aged Caol Ila from 1984 or earlier.
    • Taste
      Medium body, not very powerful. Dry oak and a good share of aged peat. Some litchis. Water makes the peat more raking but otherwise it doesn't change much. Some surprising strawberry jam notes at the very end.
    • Finish
      Fades away too fast apart from the peat. Ashy but thankfully not too dry.

    An eye-catching nose, an unstoppable mouth, what more to ask a (good) Caol Ila? Just a little more finesse and complexity, maybe.
    • Nose
      Ha! Ha! Yes ! At the first stroke of the nostril, I already know that something is happening, this alchemy that some old Caol Ila can produce at home. Cold ashes, sea breeze (which can be eaten in a fishing port in the evening), shells; but also vanilla white fruits.
    • Taste
      First vanilla, creamy, lemony, then ... BOUM! An explosion of salt and ashes, sprinkled with exotic spices. Once this peat and iodized peat apprehended, pear jam and apple appears.
    • Finish
      Average. Exotic spices mix with the ash that flies up and up in the nostrils. A little vanilla wood flees, while an iodized heat radiates deep in the throat.
