A Christmas whisky, very full flavoured, very good balance.

Wow: 'gevulde (filled) speculaas' (Dutch pastry spiced with a mixture of cinnamon/nutmeg/clove and several other spices, filled with almond paste), allspice/pimenta, marzipan, very nutty, roasted nuts, walnuts, almonds, pecan nuts, a leather note, toffee, caramel, a syrupy sweetness, dried fruits, stewed apple and pear, fruitcake, whipped cream and a subtle touch of aniseed.

Buttery, creamy and oily, a touch of leather, walnuts and almonds, the filled speculaas, dried fruits (apple and some plum), stewed pears.

Long and fantastic, again loads of almonds and the filled speculaas, a lingering fudge like creaminess.

    Blind sample.
In brief: the nose is the only bright spot of this bottling. Undrinkable without water!

Wood spices, leather, slight hints of a musty smell (is it the wood?), but not unpleasant.
Traces of darker, also ripe exotic fruits (papaya), reminds me a little bit of sherbet straws.

This is the bad part: Quite aggressive on the palate, a tannic grip and stinging alcohol, annihilating almost everything. What remains is something that most closely resembles some kind of pez candy mixed with crushed Aspirin. It even moves in a more mineral, if not chalky direction.
    • Finish
      82 82
Depends on the amount of water added. When neat, the alcohol burns its way along the gullet. The amount of dilution that would be necessary lets it fade out too fast. I could not find a compromise here...

Slightly aggressive on the palate, but the nose is absolutely world-class. A great dram that I'm glad to have tasted, as this was bottled almost 20 years ago.
    • Nose
Inviting and mature without very obvious oak or tannins. The balance is superb. Can't imagine this is almost 60 percent, but it really says so on the label. There's a soft floral hint and notes of pickled ginger, but also darker aromas. Polished leather, earthy dunnage notes, cherry syrup, cinnamon and nutmeg. Even a touch of soy.
    • Taste
Ah yes, now it shows its strength. The alcohol was hiding, I guess. Less obviously sherried than the nose, although still quite so. Ginger and chili pepper, with a whiff of leather, nutmeg and roasted peanut skins. Water brings out slightly fruitier and sweeter notes, with a hint of stewed apple and cherries.
    • Finish
      Lingering spices. Medium in length.
