Immediately after the last drops of the new bottling the old one into the glass: what a difference, especially on the tongue. The old bottling offers full pipe fruit salad with tropical fruits, indefinitely remaining on the tongue, the new bottling falls off quite nicely, remains (neutral formulated) restrained. In addition, the old bottling has nothing tart on the tongue, instead pleasant spice and said fruits. In the nose, the new bottling has much stronger spice notes, and also the approach of solvent is new (since only a touch, not further affecting).

The new 21yo is not a bad single pot still, not at all. And whether one evaluates it now worse, equal or maybe even better than the old bottling, may well be a matter of taste. For me at least he does not reach the class of the old bottling, but I miss too much the beautiful fruit notes on the tongue, he is to me - for a 21yo SPS - too spicy in the nose.

A strong spicy note that gradually peels out pepper, curry, cardamom and cloves. Some solvent. Behind the spices come tropical fruits: mango, papaya, guava, passion fruit, orange, lemon. Spices and fruits combine pleasantly with each other, the fruit note is not overly sweet. Vanilla pudding and honey, a little coffee bean flavor and whole milk chocolate.

Oily and flattering. From the very beginning with the spices from the nose, with cloves and mild pepper predominating on the tongue. A shot of passion fruit juice, otherwise you have to taste the tropical fruits a bit to catch them. Oak spice comes with time. The tart note stretches over a long time and does not actually go away. With the addition of oak, the tart feeling on the tongue is even intensified. Will dry.

Medium length, oily, slightly herbaceous and with a hint of tropical fruits.

For me clearly the better bottling, however, one must say to the fans of mango and oak, that here by the lack of the bitter fruit notes becomes interchangeable. Qualitatively, however, absolute upper class. I recommend anyone who has the opportunity to try parallel to the previous batch, is really fun. I hope Midleton can keep this quality.
    • Nose
In direct comparison not this enormous and superficial fragrance of mango, here gentler, more balanced. Overall, but also very intense flavors. More Sherry influence maybe. Vanilla and caramel also there. Yummy, the oak does not seem to be that much anymore.
    • Taste
here too full-bodied, creamy onset, just as tropical fruits as expected, but also not here this enormously tart oak note as 2013er. Instead, complex fruit notes, pineapple, flambé banana. Honey. Less spicy. Very balanced, very soft, like an old Speysider barrel.
    • Finish
also quite long, sweeter, no annoying bitterness, just round and delicious.

    • Nose
A very, very many sweet pears, currants and babanas
    • Taste
      Astringent and coarse, sweet currant
    • Finish
      Currants and candies, medium duration

Tasting of a current bottling in 2020
    • Nose
Very sweet at first. White chocolate & almonds. Then very briefly very ripe (tropical) fruits without acid. Then the oak strikes and gives the nose a strong aroma. Almost reminds me of a ripe bourbon.
    • Taste
Spicy and less sweet than the nose. Lots of oak and pot still seasoning. Nutty and warm. A hint of vanilla.
    • Finish
Despite the strong oak load, not bitter or dry, but instead long-lasting aromatic.

Lovely nose, fresh and fruity, unmistakably pot still. Full of orange zest and warm spices. Palate is more of the same, with an oily texture and great balance of flavours. Feels between a scotch and a bourbon, blending maltiness with some vanilla and oak, sweet but not too cloying.

One of my favourite Irish whiskies, only eclipsed by some of the early 90s tropical fruit bombs.
