My first Springbank cask strength knocked me sideways a couple of years ago. What a fat, rich, oily, funky, delicious malt it is or rather was!

  7. Lukas_Kiene scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

I always find such malts difficult to evaluate 'in general', they are just really delicious and definitely something special. Just because of its really independent character, Springbank has always had a few more points of sympathy with me. It just feels like someone is really trying hard behind the Springer bottlings.
    • Nose
      88 88
Typical for Springbank just: unique, different, outstanding. Very creamy with a sweet fruity note. Something like vanilla and red grits. Or maybe raspberry cream too? In addition, a very delicate but noticeable smoky note that reminds me of very dry, glowing charcoal and a fireplace. Again and again this creamy fruit note comes to the fore and forms an excellent harmony with the smoke. A dark, dry chocolate note is also sometimes added.
    • Taste
      88 88
Perfect continuation of the nose. The creamy fruits show up again, I'm back with red fruit jelly accompanied by vanilla. Again the dry smoke shows up, the fireplace is still blazing (but very gently!). The second sip reveals a lot of chocolate and vanilla cream. Again everything in perfect symbiosis with the exciting peat smoke. Round, harmonious, super balanced, tasty and with excellently integrated alcohol. What more do you want?
    • Finish
      87 87
Very pleasant, the smoke is really very reserved here. Has a minimally spicy effect. Perhaps a little shorter and less spectacular than expected, but it hardly diminishes the great experience of this malt. The smoke fades very slowly with a dry wood note.

The peat is good, but Shirley doesn't show up, but it's a little bit bitter.
    • Nose
Salty sherry, Zhenjiang meat, saltpeter, gravy, wax oil, cheese, coconut milk, chest oil, herbal medicine commonly found in toothpaste (it feels rare in Yunding), plum, black currant, citrus, fruit jam , Relatively sweet, smoked roasted, pepper, light peat. You can always trust the early 12CS.
    • Taste
There are faint sulfur, tannins, pepper, bitter peat, caramel, rhubarb, bacon, ghee, full of impact, but it seems that Shirley's influence is not particularly obvious. Coarse salt, sand, rubber, bitter coffee, some fruits and dough.
It is great, rich in fat, slightly sweet, no sour, no astringency, bitterness, no pungency, no alcohol.
    • Finish
Long-term, oak, charcoal, salt and pepper, charred, soy fat, peat.

Eyes: Golden smelling fragrance. Nose: Ah so fragrant. Melon flesh, ash minerals, blasted fireworks, tea soup, sugar cubes, vanilla cream, lingering spring water, citrus sugar, chamomile, and some scented candles. The smell is slightly waxy, strong oily, medium acidity, salt, a little kerosene, some chalk gray, and red plums.
Taste Palate: clear and bitter, very refreshing citrus, with the cooling and refreshing of herbal spices.
Medium salty, medium acid, table salt, honeydew, ore, spring water, berries, a bit of bitter base, a bit of pine wood, a bit of spicy pepper. The bitterness of basil, light smoke, citronella, carnation, bath salt, oak, blood orange, red grapefruit, grapefruit peel.

Beautiful malt, versatile without being too complex. Everything works well together. Is just very consistent.
    • Nose
      86 86
Initially light sweet fruit with some marzipan and honey. Add a little smoke, fresh apricots, peaches. Later comes a light salt note and some pepper.
      Makes you want to more.
    • Taste
      87 87
pleasantly creamy, soft with vanilla and pepper. Again, some smoke with liquorice. Nice maritime notes. Light tingling, with salt. Back again apricots, peach.
A round thing. Water does not necessarily need that.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium-long, soft and slightly salty oak, sweetness and salt

  25. Kaleva scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Despite 12 years of age this Springbank is really pleasant and does not show any signs of immaturity. Very fresh and tasty, goes good on its full strength but even better being diluted.
    • Nose
Fresh and “green” - green apples, green pears, grassy notes, very light and gentle smoke, hint of malt, light vanilla, porridge, some lemon. With water come more vanilla, toffee, some farmy notes
    • Taste
Very sweet, oatmeal, a bit of white pepper, lemon zest, oaky tannins, light bitterness
    • Finish
      Medium-long, ashy, apple seeds, oak

    Color: dark gold

Nose: Light smoke mingles with yellow stone fruit, perhaps mirabelle jam. Some paint or thinner, also a trace phenolic. Ripe exotic fruits, honey. He smells as if he were round and soft on the palate and drink well without water. For the 54.1% very open. With water even more, it comes a slightly cheesy note that reminds of some older Highlander. Also herbs.

Palate: This is Planet Springbank! Great balanced profile of malt, dry citrus flavors that are concentrated and dressed with syrupy sweetness. Wonderful with water, still concentrated, salty on the palate, spices come into play, ginger, some pepper, chili.

    Finish: medium length

    Great!

just opened the bottle and it feels like it may need some time on air to grow into its full potential.

so far its nice, quite nice actually - but it has that little alcoholic youth to it. so imo its not a whisky that tastes as if it was beyond its true age. overall a good, though not great, 12-year old. right now i'd score it at 87 or so.

    Reassuringly spectacular.

The nose is cooly aloof with only a hint of honey sweetness and minerally peat to prepare you for what's in the glass.

Initial taste is zingy with peat and tropical fruits.

The body is thick and oily, a little dry but fruity rich and zingy.

Finish ends on a slightly dry note. Not the best of the cask strength range on account of that I think.

This one is good but has over-enthusiastic oak issues.,

Got this one as a sample, after i impulsively bought the 12yo CS batch 14... am looking forward to taste that one as well!
    • Nose
So much going on here, wow! Smoke, orangepeel, wet rocks at the seacoast, currywurst spices, and ripe yellow melons. Also some dirty notes like wet charcoal and rubber are perfectly balanced in the mix.
    • Taste
Strong and powerful, i love it. it really follows the nose well, but than more powerful. Smokes with some sherry fruits and oranges. Oily as seen often in Cambeltowners.
    • Finish
a thick oily spicy mix with some dry salts-mineralliness (is that a word ?) very pleasant, and medium long.

Maybe a bit rougher than batch #9 was, but singularly tasty as well, so I'll give it the same rating. Only seems fair.
    • Nose
Lots of brine, but also leather and subtle wood smoke. A touch of tobacco, a whisper of triple sec, and some dark chocolate too. Finally some wet rocks, limestone and ginger. Lovely balanced.
    • Taste
Fat and oily mouthfeel with pepper, peat and caramel. A warming embrace. Lots of spices (ginger, nutmeg, cloves). The cigar tobacco and leather also make a comeback. Quite delicious. Oh, and some oranges too!
    • Finish
      Soft peat and lingering spices.

Only lacks a bit of equilibrium and, well, "poetry" to be a 90-pointer. But you gotta admit that there's something about this entirely-assumed austerity that just can't leave you cold. I highly respect Springbank for this kind of gamble.
    • Nose
Starts discrete, with clean rubber and other industrial notes. Then opens generously, mostly on nougat, fudge, and a big sweet hazelnut paste. As often with Springbank in my experience, a soft and innocent fruity marker gives some appeal to the whole : here, strawberry jam. Aside these very sweet notes, dirtiness is still present, this is no fake Springbank : muddy water, mustard, vegetal peat ... Very nice profile, with some pleasant sexy sweetness balanced by some typical Springbank austerity.
    • Taste
Take the nose's last word and turn it to eleven. Über auster Campbeltown whisky, incredible, fierce, impressive. Ultra extractive green coffee, slate, wax, linseed oil, rocket salad ... Not for the faint hearted. Not a pinch of sugar here, only a very timid waxy fruitiness behind this intimidating demonstration of dry sherriness. Mezcal and super-bitter lime. On the very end, hazelnuts are back, to bring somme yummy. Wow.
    • Finish
Again, austere in the best possible way, leaves the mouth cleansed. Super mineral again (slate) and waxy, it lingers and lingers on some green wood and big fat limestone notes. Like an extreme Sancerre in which some green coffee beans and a few hazelnuts would have marinated.

Intense, on the malt. Smoke typical, rich, sticky like soot. Fruits. Nuts.

      Final consistent with the mouth.

one of these very high quality standards, certainly not for beginners, surprisingly complex for old age.
    • Nose
Pure: an immediately recognizable, because very strong character Springbank nose. A mixture of salty harbor smoke, yellow fruits and, in this case, a nice malt aroma, as if in a still. Slightly dirty the whole thing. Unmistakable and complex. With water: now properly grained as in a cornfield, mango and pineapple come through, the maritime goes back slightly.
    • Taste
Pure: slightly peppery onset, cold ashes, quite a bit of smoke even. Then sweeter, more fruity notes, than really sherrylastig I would not call him. Increasing bread spice note. Delicious! With water: dark honey, altogether more palatable, now also some raisins and chocolate from the sherry.
    • Finish
medium in length, all aromas linger quite well together. Great!

This is a good CS, with good balance
    • Nose
Malty sweetness on the nose with a little cheese and ham, then a little chocolate
    • Taste
Quite spirity on pineapple, apple and a little peach juice, then gets a little creamy.

There is also something nutty at the back of the palate.
    • Finish
Medium length getting a little sweeter.

Caramel, stock, brine and oranges on the nose. Really dense and heavy nose with lots of layers. Take your time… After the firs taste I get barley sugar, pineapple, ripe peaches, marmalade, cured ham with cantaloupes (how nice is that ;)) I’m not done yet: caramelised chestnuts and a wisp of smoke. Initially sweet with a lovely peppery oak. Oily mouthfeel with blackcurrant, ripe cantaloupe, candied ginger, grated orange peel and premium shoe polish (if that exists). Wonderful mouthfeel! Long and smooth finish with some great rancio. So nice to see that some distilleries don’t change their style just to make an extra buck. Consistency wins in the long run especially if the whisky is this good. Keep up the good work…

A delicious Springbank! Dirty and sweet, fruit and vanilla, power and balance. Delicious!
    • Nose
typical Springbank! Grassiness, hay, light smoke, a little salty, caramel and vanilla, coming from light fruits such as peach, mango and sweet mandarins, the tendency swings from darker fruits and raisins, a touch of leather, a balanced round nose, not outstanding complex but very delicious, it is getting sweeter with candied apples
    • Taste
strong onset, smoke, again hay, caramel, pepper and salt, creamy, beautifully full as you would expect from Springbank, raisins, a touch of chocolate, vanilla, oranges, apple
    • Finish
some oak, smoke, dark chocolate, not so salty, some smoked bacon, oranges, vanilla pudding

    sample.

A very good , affordable go to CS Whisky.
    • Nose
A bit of vanilla. Then it gets increasingly farmy. Quinces/apples. Some caramel and a little citrusy. More earth now. Becomes herbal/grassy after some time. There is a cheesy off note, apart from that the nose is very good.
    • Taste
Caramel and cough sirup in the arrival. Quite zesty actually. Extremely dusty and mineral after that. More herbal notes. Very phenolic for such a mildly peated Whisky. Roots and and salt. All that is accompanied by a heavy oily taste.
    • Finish
Not that long but great enough. Mineral, still oily, with lots of caramel. A very fresh and minty/grassy after taste.

The sherry influence is more apparent in the nose than in the taste. In direct comparison, it makes batch 11 smell bourbon-ish although the proportions are similar. It is more spicy, seems younger and less smooth (but therefore perhaps more typical Springbank) than that one though. A big difference? No, not really. I'm giving it the same score.

Then the real test, compared to #8, one of the two superior 2014 batches. Then it just falls short, with less sherry influence actually and clearly some rough edges in comparison.
    • Nose
Papaya, caramel, citrus, peat, pineapple, furniture polish, cherry, leather, cocoa, vanilla, minerals and a light grassy touch.
    • Taste
Mango, pepper, peat, peach, orange, caramel, rhubarb and vanilla. With water some apple, but more than a drop really lowers my score. It needs to stay at full strength to stick together.
    • Finish
Peat, rhubarb, mango, caramel, nutmeg and limestone.

Nice thing, very own but good!
    • Nose
bright, sweet fruits lying in the middle of a dunghill; fresh hay; stains, salty notes; a little smoke; with some time in the glass, the dung heap disappears a little and the sweetness becomes clearer; the alcohol is only very discreetly noticeable Bottom line a very own, if nice nose
    • Taste
nice creamy; then comes very quickly an intense tingling; here you notice the alcohol; Nice again with vanilla and a little oak; again bright fruits; with water: apples, lemons and it gets a little creamier and sweeter
    • Finish
medium; nice spicy with a little oak; again sweetness and the dirty salt from the nose; dirty smoke; with water the dung heap comes again (but somehow delicious)

For me, the 12 CS is "the" filling of Springbank. So far I have never been disappointed with the different batches. The quality basic character is always the same, only in the intensity of the flavors there are slight (actually negligible) deviations.
For me, the 12 CS bottlings have so far been worth a constant 89 points. If I were to consider the PLV, there would be a few more points.
    • Nose
      89 89
At the beginning, pleasantly fresh notes of apricots, peaches and tangerines dominate. Over time, the nose is then a bit "heavier" and it comes mild meadow herbs, some salt + pepper and a light peat note added. Everything harmoniously and in a great balance matched. Nothing stands out unpleasantly.
      A very nice nose.
    • Taste

Fine peat, dried apricots, sea salt and pepper, dried violets from the past year. Wonderful how all this arrives on the palate at the same time! And yet it quickly succeeds in identifying the individual aromas - without them "falling apart".
Fresh and "airy" at first (even at cask strength), the malt swings after a while on a train of young oak, but it takes along the aromas of the start.

In the long finish, the peat notes, as well as the pepper intensifies. The bright fruits are darker and more mature, Sherrynoten occur.

First, stinging in the nose. But then a surprising smell of fermenting pizza dough (yeast). Yes, I like it. In the mouth a lot of orange. Delicious.
